Born in Hertfordshire, educated in West Sussex, Southgate's soccer career ended in 2006 playing for Middlesbrough after defeat in a Uefa final with Seville. His managerial career started that year and he was manager till 2009 when Middlesbrough were relegated on the final day of the season. He was out of management for 4 years till he took charge of the under 21 team. In 2016 he took charge of the England senior team. Southgate has seen the ups and downs of soccer both as a player and a team manager, which has given him the humility and sense of respect for others that has marked his career.

England coach Gareth Southgate reflects here on his penalty kick in the 1996 semifinals against Germany in Euro Soccer at the Wembley stadium. He recall that at the time the penalty kicks were handled as more a situation of luck not skill and practice. He took the kick with little practice and he recalls some negativity in his mind, and missed. Twenty two years later at a knockout stage game in Moscow he faced the similar situation playing Columbia. This time he was manager. But this time the team had changed its attitude. Penalties were seen as being about skills, practice and effort. His focus was on the process, and let the results work themselves out. He encouraged his players to take a positive attitude and think positively during the kick. Combining skill and process worked and England won that game.  In 2021 Gareth Southgate is the coach for the English team that plays against Italy in July's final at Wembley stadium. This story of soccer players is true for many of the best, coming close for the fans is not enough, many finals and superb performances are not enough. This is true for coaches. The same could be said for England coach Gareth Southgate, coming close for fans is not enough. It was Toni Kroos's last game, a player as gifted and patient as Harry Kane. Lionel Messi did not score in the Copa America Finals game against Columbia, in extra time Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal in Miami. Still the golden boot went to Dani Olmo and Harry Kane of the Spanish and English teams, such was the extent of their effort, giving it their all, and the people watching the game all over the world thank them for it. ...

Germany's goalie Neuer would stay outside his goal box so much of the time that it has become the norm for goalies to move out of their box to tackle incoming balls. In this World Cup Soccer the winning team goalies have stayed inside their box to make saves. Particularly true for France, Croatia's Subasic and goalies for Belgium and France. Most of the game depended on goalie saves for Croatia and France. Subasic and Lloris stayed inside the goalie's six yard box and made sensational saves. France's coach also wanted his goalie inside the box and to play the game the way it used to be played 20 years ago.

The current or former vice presidents or executive committee members at the top of the FIFA soccer organization who were arrested by Swiss authorites at the request of the U.S. Justice Department are from small countries such as Paraguay, Uruguay, Trinidad and Tobago, and two officials from the Cayrran Islands which most people have not heard of. Others are from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Venezuela in the central American region. This tells a lot about why the FIFA is in such a mess today. One nation, one vote means Trinidad counts for as much as England and Germany. There are 209 members with many being small nations such as Botswana. It is based in Zurich, was founded in 1904, and is subject to Swiss law. The result say critics is that there is very little change at the top, with Seth Blatter the FIFA head since 1998 in near complete control and very little prospect of change. He worked his way from secretary to president, and was previously employed by Swiss watchmaker Longines. Some critics describe the situation as reminiscent of medieval fiefdoms, and lacking the openness and transparency so essential in a body governing one of the most popular sports in the world....

England just had to stay calm, after Denmark went ahead 1-0 in the first 30 minutes, says this analysis of the Euro soccer semi final game with Denmark. Coach Southgate remained calm and had his players settle down. Eventually the stronger English bench wore the Danish players down. Harvey Kane scored on a penalty kick in the first part of extra time. Jack Grealish, Jordan Henderson, and Phil Foden were brought in and provided the energy on the English side that eventually prevailed. With the better overall bench and team England had to learn the lesson of staying calm through the early part of the game so that their deeper skills in the game could find expression.

The Spanish Soccer Federation expresses the views of Spanish society in an open letter after the the firing of Jorge Vilda, the Spanish coach of the women's team, who was unpopular with players because of overly controlling methods. Mr. Vilda had also supported Mr. Rubiales who refuses to resign. And the players had celebrated their 1-0 win over England in the finals away from Vilda, and a few top players did not play because of the behaviour of Vilda and Rubiales during the years before the finals.

"The Spanish Soccer Federation wishes to apologize for the totally unacceptable behavior of its highest representative during the final and subsequent moments, which did not in any way reflect the values of Spanish society, their institutions, their representatives, their leaders and the athletes of Spanish sports."

Karen Carney played for England that night in Helsinki in 2009 when Germany won 6-2. She recalls that night and how the German team seemed better prepared. Now she says it is level ground as women players in Britain are getting better opportunities to play as professionals and treated that much better, not required to train at the park or go to the gym on their own time. 

Jill Scott she says is amazing for her longevity and her humility as the only player who is still playing from that night in Helsinki. She would tell any player to learn from Jill's work ethic and the hard work she put in to better herself and learn. 

Karen says Sarina Weigman is very special as the female coach, she would love to play for Wiegman, that she is inspiring. She sees this event at Wembley as really special for women's soccer.
