French president Macron cancels a fuel tax increase after violent protests. Spontaneous protests took place in Paris and across France. People in rural France were angered by the increase in the fuel tax even though by a few cents, because many people in rural areas of France are struggling to make ends meet. The tax aroused sentiment in rural areas because it followed a move by president Macron to cancel a tax on the wealthy.  Students and ambulance workers joined the strike. 
The aloof nature of president Macron staying above the public concerns has led to a sharp drop in his popularity and the sudden eruption of protests.

Macron's large majority in parliament may not reflect the true nature of public opinion as many people stayed away from the polls in the election for the National Assembly. Since the election Macron has alienated members of his own Movement by not listening to concerns and several ministers have resigned.

2G+ concept in Bundesliga means that football stadiums in Germany are filling up to capacity with fans who are double vaccinated or tested not required to wear masks. Small groups of fans not fully vaccinated are separated in separate locations in the stadium requiring masks and social distancing. Demonstrations across France in cities like Paris, Lyon and Marseilles, by private and public trade unions drew an estimated 2.5 million people. They are protests that President Sarkozy's government is not doing enough to provide stimulus to the economy and protect jobs. THese are the largest nationwide demmonstrations in more than 20 years. France lost the most jobs in 40 years in the last quarter of 2008 and Sarkozy's government has only announced a$35 billion stimulus. Germany and France are also holding back on large stimulus spending , including significant help for Eastern European countries, and this will become an issue at the April 2, 2009 G-20 meeting. In addition to the efforts by protests to preserve Hong Kong's special autonomous status, there is a protest by students "Occupy Central," similiar to the "Occupy Wall Street" protests. That aspect of the protest is aimed less at Beijing than at the financial establishment in Hong Kong. Because of its role as financial capital in Asia a lot is at stake for the U.S., Britain, and for China itself, in preserving the special role that Hong Kong has enjoyed for two decades since 1997 transfer from Britain. The reform increases the number of years workers have to make contributions for the pension and increases the age to 64. It comes at a time of social change in France with workers and families under stress from a cost of living crisis, and loss of manufacturing in communities across France, a widening economic gap between cities and rural areas.  About 1.2 to 1.4 million people are expected to come out in the protests across France.

A poll released by Datafolha on June 29, 2013, shows a sharp drop in popularity of Brazil's president Dilma Rousseff from 57% to 30%. In northeastern Brazil, an area where the ruling Workers Party enjoyed strong support, Rousseff's popularity fell sharply from 64% to 40%. Over 80% of respondents in the poll expressed support for the street protests in Brazilian cities over poor infrastructure, transportation and public services, and overspending on soccer stadiums at the expense of basic services. A protest over bus fare increases set off the street protests. Rousseff's response to the protests have come under criticism- the president offered to conduct a referendum for improving the political system, and channel oil royalties to education.

A long transport strike and street protests have not affected the pension overhaul of president Macron in France. The French parliament will review the changes to the pension system that consolidate 42 different pension plans into one universal pension plan that seeks to be fair, reflect current conditions including longer life expectancy, and to make the plan financially viable. Other benefits are that it would be more transparent and enable workers to change jobs or careers, says Health Minister Ms. Buzyn.

Macron's new system for pensions calculates pension payments based on the entire salary history of an employee. Previously pension payments were calculated based on 25 highest paying years for private sector employees, and for civil servants on the last 6 months of salary before retirement.

Parliament will debate the new rules in February and the plan is likely to be passed by this summer because Macron has a large majority.

The resignation of Ahmed Shafiq, a former Air Force official who was close to Mubarak, from the prime minister's position. He will be replaced by Essam Sharaf, a former transport minister. Protest leaders had suggested Sharaf's name to the military running the country. ElBaradei former head of the IAEA and Amr Moussa of the Arab League had pushed for Shafiq's resignation. Sharaf is an engineer who studied for his Ph.D. at Purdue University in the U.S. In Egypt the changes demanded by the protests for democracy are still unmet. The emergency laws are still in place, the large internal security services have not been disbanded. One example of this was the arrest just last week of one protestor and sentencing by a military court within 3 days to 5 years in prison.

48% of British voters see immigration as the most important issue says Ipsos. And 31% say their local area is housing more than its fair share of asylum seekers growing to 61% of Reform UK voters. Reform UK is now leading party with 34% of the vote to Labour's 25% and Liberals 11%. The report in the WSJ on Augu 28 shows how the Labour government did not live up to it's talk on immigration. It also shows how the Conservatives and Boris Johnson failed by opening up non EU immigration from Asia on the grounds that it would bring in the brightest and yet dropped the basic colege degree requirement paradoxically. Lobbying from health care home care increased migration for this field under Conservatives and is only now being reversed by Labour. Labour has been too slow and the culture of Britain and Labour has not changed enough to grasp the problem. Their are vested interests in Britain such as universities and home care health care that have influenced the conduct of policy so that migration on non-eu has replaced eu migration after Brexit but not attracted the most qualified immigrants. The 4% of the British population that entered Britain after Brexit as immigrants, millions arrived and now when Labour is trying to bring this down faces a large number of dependent applications.University students are now bringing in their dependents at rates that have skyrocketed. ...
