South Korean public opinion shows 80% of the public opposed to the release of slightly radioactive Fukushima water into the sea by Japan. Japanese public opinion is accepting this as unavoidable. This is weakening the position of South Korean president Yoon in coming elections. Yoon is a prosecutor who joined politics only a few years back and has seen his popularity drop by 7 percentage points to 35%. John Lyons of the WSJ writes in this report from Seoul, South Korea, that president Moon may have inadvertently contributed to the sense of the futility of talking to South Korea about missile defense when he opposed the installation of the Thaad, Terminal high altitude missile system, in his election campaign. This led to the U.S. and the South Korean government of president Ms. Park moving ahead with the system before Moon was elected. Moon is a human rights lawyer who favored improved relations with North Korea. Domestic South Korean politics were decided by younger voters alienated by the existing business structure, leading to the conviction of president Park and later the head of Samsung on corruption charges, and the election of Mr. Moon. In foreign affairs the picture is quite different as Moon is seen in South Korea as not being consulted by the U.S. as it frames policy for the region. South Koreans call this "Korea passing." As U.S. and Japan are directly affected by North Korean missile tests, the most recent on August 29th passing over Japan, U.S. president Trump consults with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe. People in Japan are cited in the NYT as saying recently, that they knew they had to worry about earthquakes, but had not expected to have to worry about missiles. A recent report in NYT showed that most people in Seoul have not prepared seriously to use underground shelters because they do not believe a war could take place with Seoul only 35 miles from the North Korea border. The U.S. policy is now focused on working with China, and coordinating its policy with Japan. A U.S. anti ballistic missile test was conducted from the ship USS John Paul Jones on August 29th. Moon has changed his position and now supports Thaad missile defense. South Koreans are apparently resigned to the prospect of "Korea passing." ...

A women's rights advocate, and mayor of Seoul, South Korea, and one who as a lawyer was active in defending women's rights against harassment, is found dead. This happened 2 days after a former secretary who joined his office in 2017 filed a complaint at a police precinct about sexual harassment. Park Won-Soon was mayor of Seoul since 2011 and led the fight against the coronavirus. He had also fought for civil rights with the ruling party leaders in the struggle against the dictatorship in the 1980's.  The city of Seoul was in shock after it became apparent that Park had killed himself. South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun took his life in 2009 after the state prosecutors began investigating corruption allegations against his family. Culture in South Korea and Japan is changing from a long history and tradition of male dominant society as women assert rights to equality under the law and fair treatment at work. This is an unusual twist to the story as Park was actually one of the people initiating and supporting constructive change, and is the reason it has led to mourning in South Korea for the loss of Park Won-Soon.  ...

The US Supreme Court will soon make a decision on the power of president Biden to take action on student loan forgiveness for millions of borrowers when Congress has failed to take action. 43 million people in the US holding $1.6 trillion in student debt would get some form of forgiveness under president Biden's $400 billion plan. Arguments will be made at the Supreme Court with a 6-3 Trump appointed majority of Conservative justices and a decision expected in June. Graham asked Bondi: “Can you tell me why my phone records were sought by the Jack Smith agents? Why did they ask to know who I called?” Grassley called this an "outrage" and an "unconstitutional breach." At the same time FBI Director Kash Patel said on X that he had fired "those who had acted unethically" in this situation. South Korea never had the benefit of representation in parliament under the Japanese the way India had in the British parliament for Naoroji and others by the 1900's, political participation in the 1920's, assembly elections in 1930's under the British. Democracy came to South Korea in 1948 in the middle of a huge war in the Korean peninsula with invasion from the North, leaving it without democratic traditions, and again in protests in 1960 against Synghman Rhee's military government. Then followed military governments by Park and Chun till 1988. Democracy is only 36 years old in South Korea since 1988. BBC gives this Special Report on President Yoon of South Korea how he was elected as a prosecutor of a right wing government and made Chief Prosecutor by left wing parties. After this appointment he investigated ministers in the left wing government. This increased his popularity but also alineated both the left and the right. Running for election as president of South Korea he won by less than one percent of the vote.  BBC talks to a Yoon primary school friend Lee who describes his interaction with his friend over many years- during which he make more introverted, angry and vehement, and after becoming president more authoritarian. The process is described by the BBC talking to other colleagues and friends of Yoon who worked with him. They found that he relied more and more on a close group of like minded right wing groups. After losing the parliamentary election by a big majority he became a lame duck but still stubbornly refused to talk to the Opposition leaders to work together. Soon he began to see them as his enemy watching too many one sided You Tube videos. The result was one day he declared martial law, creating a huge wave of  opposition by the public, the military and others. In 6 hours he had to withdraw martial law- ending his career when his impeachment was upheld today April 3, 2025 by the Constitutional Court. ...

The opening of bars and restaurants risks restarting the coronavirus epidemic in South Korea again after a 29 year old man visited 5 clubs and later tested positive. Contact tracing identified the man but similar cases in the Itaewon neighborhood have led to the conclusion that about one third of 5000 people believed to be involved in bars have not been traced. Over 50 cases have been traced to this one person alone. 

It is now believed that the entire South Korean efort could unravel with the mistakes of a few people. Now president Moon says "its not over till its over," and that it will be a long time before the coronavirus is ended completely. He warned a new wave of infections could happen anytime anywhere.

Dnilon says many presidents fail to answer the question "why are you running" with a direct answer. For Biden it is about the preservation of democracy and freedom. Donilon is a University of Virgina law graduate who worked in the Carter, Clinton and Obama White House. He even helped Carter phase into civilian life after his presidency. As chief of staff to Warren Christopher Clinton's Secretary of State. He was Obama's NSA adviser till 2013. He has a treasure trove of experience. Tony Blinken worked under him at the State Department showing the close connections Biden has with his extended group of advisers. This enabled leaders from Pakistan to visit the White House in the US soon after conflict between Pakistan and India erupted over terrorist incident.
