When so much of infrastructure healthcare and education still needs more funding, and when St Paul's Cathderal lacks essential funds for basic maintenance and is in danger of closing, the Greensill scandal shows how much reallocation of funds to infrastructure, health, and education to help workers, students and families is needed. How much the existing culture distorts allocation of capital in ways that are vital to the future of families, students and workers, and lobbying acts in ways that are against the national interest. Here the WSJ says the lobbying of David Cameron, former UK prime minister extended to getting access to funds for Greensill, a  company that operated in  supply chain finance, lobbying for funds from the emergency financing facility provided by the Bank of England. Treasury rejected 56 messages sent by Cameron to top British politicians over several months to have rules changed. Greensill went into bankruptcy in March 2021, stranding investors who had put in $10 billion. A parliamentary committee is now looking into this case of Greensill. The company was founded by an Australian Lex Greensill, and does little more than provide companies a cash advance to stretch out the time to pay bills. One question no parliamentary committee will ask is why when the needs for infrastructure, health and education are so great $10 billion in funds, public or private even go into something like supply finance that does so little for the country. This is an example of the kind of distortion in the uses of capital that has become commonplace today, creating societies and countries with poorly  funded infrastructure and essential services in the advanced countries of Europe and the US. ...

There is much criticism of a $900 billion stimulus bill that only provides $600 direct payment checks to families suffering lost income during the pandemic. About $200 billion goes to business in the Paycheck Protection Program of which $120 billion goes to the most affluent 1% of Americans.

President Trump was critical and called for $2000 in direct checks saying it was scandalous that families would only get $600 in direct payment while lobbying interests and other interests were getting significant sums of money. Part of the Democratic Party has also favored a decent check to families.

48% of British voters see immigration as the most important issue says Ipsos. And 31% say their local area is housing more than its fair share of asylum seekers growing to 61% of Reform UK voters. Reform UK is now leading party with 34% of the vote to Labour's 25% and Liberals 11%. The report in the WSJ on Augu 28 shows how the Labour government did not live up to it's talk on immigration. It also shows how the Conservatives and Boris Johnson failed by opening up non EU immigration from Asia on the grounds that it would bring in the brightest and yet dropped the basic colege degree requirement paradoxically. Lobbying from health care home care increased migration for this field under Conservatives and is only now being reversed by Labour. Labour has been too slow and the culture of Britain and Labour has not changed enough to grasp the problem. Their are vested interests in Britain such as universities and home care health care that have influenced the conduct of policy so that migration on non-eu has replaced eu migration after Brexit but not attracted the most qualified immigrants. The 4% of the British population that entered Britain after Brexit as immigrants, millions arrived and now when Labour is trying to bring this down faces a large number of dependent applications.University students are now bringing in their dependents at rates that have skyrocketed. ...

The Food and Drug Administration approved Artificial Dye Red 3 in 1969. It banned it in cosmetics 20 years later in 1990 but did not ban it from food because of lobbying from the food industry, says this report in WSJ. This is simply outrageous.

Democrats and Republicans were both allowing lobbyists to damage the health of the American people. It took another 35 years after banning it in cosmetics to ban it's use in food this week. 

This is simply outrageous and shows politicians of three decades lacked the courage to even defend the Nation's food supply.

President Biden's action to protect consumers when there is a run on the banks such as SVB bank, Signature, Republic bank in the US. And the coordinated action with European central banks and European governments that protect the international banking system because of the interconnections between US and European banks and risks of contagion from one region to another. Janet Yellen at Treasury and the FDIC, Federal Reserve, Swiss central banks worked together on Credit Suisse and other banks affected by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature bank. The Federal Reserve bank of San Francisco supervised SVB bank and flagged the problems of it not being able to sustain itself in a crisis with enough cash on hand. Congress under president Trump removed banks under $250 billion in assets from supervision which made it difficult for the San Francisco Fed to take the problem of SVB to the next level or to be able under the law passed during the 2009 financial crisis to regulate SVB and impose the Fed's requirements. A problem exists  of lobbying by banks for less regulation and the influence exerted on the US government and even the Fed. Spreading of ideas that a culture of laissez fairre or little regulation works well for the banking system contrary to evidence from the 2009 financial crisis and the mismanagement of banks such as Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, with frequent or egregious behaviour leading to settlements with the government. All it takes is the failure of one significant bank even if it is not a large bank, and the spiralling effects on banks with weakness of some kind for a crisis of confidence in the banking system. The role of lobbying by SVB bank and its CEO's appointment to the board of San Francisco Fed is seen as part of this self serving culture. ...

Competing oligopolies or Competition? American capitalism in reality is a mix of both. Government's role in American economy shifting from higher in the Great Depression to low in Globalization and now back to supporting business to compete with China/India/Germany's Subsidized Capitalism. This WSJ piece that take a circle around the bases for a home run is in reality not a true reflection of America's management of it's economy over the last 200 years since 1825. There is a high degree of individualism, yes because it is a land that is forever expanding on sparsely populated Indian territory in the west starting under Jefferson and Washington at the Ohio/Pennsylvania frontier. By 1900 there is the emergence of the great corporations and monopolies, oligopolies with TR's busting of monopolies by 1920, and much of that structure is still there in 2025, with some obsolescence for changing technology. Oligopolies in information technologies simply absorb the small companies, and government is itself run by powerful lobbying as in the pharma industry to the sheer and alarming detriment of all Americans. ...

Ordinary Americans need protection, children in America need protection from the unacceptable risks to mental health in the social media space. Liverpool has lost its World Heritage Site status but this may not be a bad thing, says Christoph Brumann, research leader at the Max Planck Research Institute for Ethnological Research in Halle, Germany. Fewer tourists, he says in this report in DW.com, but now the city can do what it wants to modernize the docks area, and not have to worry about the World Heritage Committee or the British government interfering in its plans. The World Heritage Committee is now subject to diplomatic lobbying of many countries, and the label has lost some of its value as more countries push sites in their country. Liverpool was asked by the World Heritage Committee to stop construction on the waterfront that was helping to bring new life to the city and revitalize the docks area to keep its World Heritage status. In the end the committee that met in China with China as the chair and lobbying by other countries, deteriorating China-UK relations, and and the UK sending only a representative from the Culture Ministry not the Foreign Ministry, played a part in the vote at the World Heritage Committee, says this report. Since 1972 Europe has gained a larger share of the World Heritage Sites. After 2010 meeting in Brazil this has shifted to other countries. There is no clear idea of what a World Heritage site is- cultural, or natural. Cultural is at this point 80% of the sites. This DW report shows some of the contenders in 2021, and only a few of them can be considered to be worthy of visiting. The committee that decides this has removed Dresden for building a new bridge across the Elbe river site, a decision made in 2007, so that it is becoming more controversial. ...

David Enrich of the NYT looks at the collapse of Signature bank and SVB Bank and the role of lobbying that led to president Trump setting up new legislation raising size of banks facing Fed regulatory scrutiny from $50 billion to $250 billion. Signature Bank and the author of the regulatory law after the financial crisis of 2008 caused by faulty bank practices -who in one of the anomalies of Congress joined the bank's board for 7 years and resigned this week-  lobbied with SVB bank for less regulation and government oversight.
