Tim Kaine of Virginia was pulled in because of the 300,000 federal workers in Virginia that are his constituents for whom he felt a special responsibility and negotiated with Republicans to reverse layoffs, get back pay. This may be a key achievement of Time Kaine that is truly bipartisan. New Yorkers Schumer and Jeffries not having a federal workforce to worry about had no such responsibility and led the effort against a compromise. Masto says she saw long lines in northern Nevada for food pantry that she had not seen since Covid. Maggie Hassan joined King and Shaheen from their part of Maine-New Hampshire, and Masto was able to pull in Jacky Rosen of Nevada. All these senators are not up for reelection next year and Dick Durbin is retiring next year. As an experienced leader of Democrats Durbin might have felt that the Schumer-Jeffries demand on ACA subsidies was only going to hurt Americans who needed help, that 40 days of shutdown was accomplishing little. ...

The US government shutdown ends with Republicans + 8 Democrats in Senate voting to end shutdown on November 10, 2025. This keeps the filibuster voting rule which requires 60 votes to pass. Support of some Democrats was essential to make this happen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Dick Durbin of Illinois joined the Senators from New Hampshire and Nevada. John Fetterman who has voted independently of the Democrat party to meet views of Pennsylvania constituents supported the move. This splits New Hampshire, Maine, Nevada, Illinois and Pennsylvania from the Schumer-Jeffries leadership from New York. Tim Kaine voted with Republicans by getting them to agree to reverse federal workforce layoffs, get back pay and stop layoffs. King, Hassan and Shaheen formed the core of Democrats who believed there was no chance Obama ACA subsidies would be extended for another year as long as shutdown continued whereas there was some chance after it ended. Both Senators from Nevada Rosen and Masto were following the needs of their constituents, and so was Fetterman of Pennsylvania. ...

Texas under new state law S.B. 4 can  impose criminal penalties of upto 6 months in jail on non citizens who illegally enter Texas from Mexico. It allows state judges to order deportations to Mexico- without Mexico's consent- and allows local law enforcement to carry out the orders. The US Supreme Court upheld the US Court of Appeals 5th Circuit decision that says the law S.B. 4 passed in Texas can be enforced temporarily till it is submitted to the Court for final decision. Both Biden and Trump have visited the Texas border with Mexico. This was after Biden and Schumer passed a immigration bill 70- 30 in the Senate which Jim Lankford  Republican of Oklahoma had negotiated with Democrats. Biden said he would sign it to close the border- it would also change parole and asylum law to stop large illegal migration entirely. The former president intervened to stop passage in the House to keep the issue alive for 2024.

A $280 billion bill for investment in the semiconductor industry in the US. And a huge win on climate change with the $269 billion Schumer is negotiating in the US Congress. It is the opposite of what Republicans are saying is Biden's failure to tackle inflation. Appropriately Biden and Schumer are calling this the bill the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. How did Schumer get this done? After the Ukraine war and EU decision to shut down Russian oil supplies, cut oil and gas use by 15%, and the climate change action inducing fires and floods, there is increasing awareness about climate change action as vital for our future all over the world. This gives more confidence to Democrats to negotiate a temporary continuation of oil and gas, with increased exports of US LNG to Europe. Senator Manchin from an energy producing state of West Virginia was brought over to Schumer's side with this idea. What Biden gets is a 40% reduction of US carbon emissions over 2005 levels, enough to get within reach of the 50% he promised at COP26 in Glasgow. It is a win-win for all sides and for the American people, and shows that patience and hard work, and persistence in the face of adversity can bring results. ...

The second wave of the coronavirus is bigger than the first with the U.S. exceeding 100,000 cases a day for many days in November and hospitalizations doubling to 93,000 from the beginning to the end of November. It would provide- 1. $300 a week in federal unemployment benefits for 4 months. 2. $160 billion for state and local governments. 3. Temporary moratorium on coronavirus related lawsutis. 4. Additional funding for small business, schools, health care, transit, student loans. There is growing agitation among influential senators against the leadership in both parties of McConnell and Schumer, with the sense that the leadership has failed to recognize how critical the issue of emergency relief is for tens of millions of Americans. This is its only hope for passage with the bickering of the leadership on both sides. ...

The Republican tax law of 2018 is unpopular, according to a new NBC/WSJ poll in April 2018. Only 27% of people in the poll view the tax law favorably, 36% view the tax law unfavorably. About one third or 32% say they have no opinion, possibly because they have no clear idea of how it will impact them or the country. On trade and other economic issues the Republican Party is viewed more favorably, including for its tougher stance to give the U.S. a level playing field. Even though the Republicans are not viewed so favorably on taxes, the poll findings show the Democrats are not seen as better on taxes and economic issues. The poll also shows the Democratic Party better able by large margins to handle issues such as gun violence, sexual harrassment and health care.
