WSJ's Christopher Mims shows the failure of tech startups in low margin industries in which the startups added little real innovation. What he does not say is that these so called "tech startups" have caused a massive capital misallocation and poor productivity of capital for trillions of dollars of American savings. This  happened when the productivity of capital for infrastructure and manufacturing industries in which the US has fallen behind is increasing. It has also caused "crowding out" of essential government investments in infrastructure and manufacturing in the US. In food delivery, used car delivery, online streaming and a whole range of business startups sales are falling as consumers hit by high inflation are budgeting carefully for all expenses. Many are disappearing after years of losses leaving a trail of destruction that includes the unrealized infrastructure and manufacturing that America's communities so badly need.  ...

How to know where inflation is headed is shown here in charts in the WSJ. One has to look at the charts for oil and energy costs, automobile costs which are about one fifth of the inflation, retail prices, travel costs, expectations that drive prices. As the pressures decrease for demand for goods in 2022 following a pandemic induced increase in demand the inflation is driven largely by energy and automobiles costs. Amazon is renting out the extra space that it does not need in warehouses is one report in WSJ today. Pharmaceutical companies such as J&J are also seeing an easing of demand as reported in WSJ. The bottlenecks at the port of Los Angeles are also easing with improved unloading of containers which eases flow of goods.

Bellman and Dayal in WSJ give this amazing report of how vaccine travels from Pune to remote region of Mizoram hills in India's northeast near Burma. This is the story of the largest vaccination drive in the world that aims to have the vaccine supplies by July to vaccinate the entire population of 1.2 billion people by December 2021. It all began with Oxford University and Astra Zeneca with the decision to make the vaccine available to such a vast population and to people in all parts of the world not just Europe and the US. Bharat Biotech and India's pharmaceutical manufacturers have now joined efforts with the help of the Indian government to produce enough vaccine at affordable cost and make vaccine supplies ample and accessible. This will then be extended to all parts of the world.

Karan Singh and the Indian Express's Manoj C. J. take us on a journey through time to the decisions made since 1927 by one of India's most famous princely rulers Hari Singh of Srinagar. Hari Singh represented the princely states of India at the Round Table Conference in London when Mohandas Gandhi was negotiating with the British for self-rule. Karan Singh was appointed Regent in the state in 1949 after Hari SIngh left the state and the princely states were being integrated to form a new nation Bharat following independence from Britain. He continued as chief of state till 1965 when he became governor of the state till 1967, then served for 40 years as a member of parliament.

The James Webb Space telescope reaches its final destination on Jan. 24, 2022 at Lagrange Point 2 or L2 on the other side of the moon, one million miles from earth. In an amazing feat of science one side of the telescope the instrument side will be cloaked in frigid darkness, and the other will defect temperatures of 230 degrees centigrade facing the sun. This keeps the telescope's sensors cool so that stray heat does not interfere with its infrared scans of ancient galaxies and planets orbiting other stars.

Redistricting for Hispanic districts under Proposition 50 in California which passed by 64% in November 2025. A separate Louisiana case challenges redistricting by race as conducted under the Voting Rights Act. The US Supreme Court will have to rule on this issue. It is not always clear how this will work as Hispanic population has done well in employment statistics.

Airlines are not taking delivery of planes from Airbus and Boeing as travel on airlines remains restricted by a surge in the coronavirus cases in July 2020. Boeing delivered only 20 aircraft in the second quarter down from 90 in the same quarter in 2019. Airbus delivered 74 jets in the second quarter down from 227 in the prior year. This is straining finances for Airbus and Boeing. This affects suppliers such as engine maker GE.

Here are some ways to make for a better day at work.  1. Have what is called a "monk-mode" morning when you just keep out all phone calls and focus on "deep work," without distractions. Every little distraction in the form of a call or some other interruption has its costs in terms of having to refocus and not being able to concentrate on the task at hand as it deserves. 2. Have "meeting-free" days. These are days that you can focus, concentrate on tasks without distraction of meetings. Have walking meetings and meetings where you can walk out in the open for fresh air and some exercize. And no phones at meetings. 3. Replace reading with presenting powerpoint presentations. Have people write out their ideas for others to read so that discussion can be engaged and effective. Amazon CEO Bezos never believed in powerpoint presentations and required staff to write so that they could in the process improve on the clarity of their thinking. 4.  Have weekends free of email. This reduces the stress of workers under a manager who spend time writing and answering emails over weekends when they could replenish their energies and come back charged up on Monday morning for a fresh start on a new week. 55. Grab a coffee with a colleague and do some one on ones talking as one walks around the offices. This was done by Intel's Andy Grove as an effective way to get things done eliminating some of the need for formal meetings. The new administration of Lopez Obrador takes the first step in its efforts to to end the rampant corruption in Mexico that has affected previous governments, in this story from the WSJ.  Lobrador campaigned on this issue and won an overwhelming mandate. Mexico's finance ministry is conducting an investigation into dealings of the steel maker Ahmsa in the sale of a fertilizer plant to Pemex during the period when Mr. Lozoya was CEO of Pemex.  Mr. Lozoya led Pemex from 2012 with the election of President Nieto of the PRI party to 2015 when he was replaced as CEO as Pemex finances suffered and Pemex failed to anticipate a fall in oil prices.  Pemex paid $475 million for the fertilizer plant. Mexico's government says the plant was worth about $50 million. The Brazilian company Odebrecht is also involved in the transactions, according to this report in the WSJ. Ahmsa is struggling to operate under court approved restructuring. Twenty years ago it defaulted on $1.8 billion of debt. Similar problems have plagued countries in other parts of the world. In Malaysia a new government campaigned on this issue with a 90 year old Mahathir Mohamed returning to head the new government  following the election.  ...

A grass roots movement that is taking shape in the Social Democrats SPD party since 2018 that is likely to reshape the party around critical issues. A surge in memberships in the party is bringing more young people into the party. Many are joining to bring momentum like that of Jeremy Corbyn into the SPD. Jeremy Corbyn revived Labour by winning 40% of the vote in the 2017 election. He also won the leadership of the Labour party with the help of young people who became Labour party supporters by paying a small fee of $4.15. In 2015 these young activists took part in the leadership contest electing Corbyn. For the SPD the election results under a series of leaders are one long road downhill to support today at about 14%, a shocking figure for the party of Willy Brandt, a figure in the SPD from 1964 to 1987 of the stature of Konrad Adenauer who helped build a new post war Germany. There is no where to go but uphill and little to lose in shifting away from the coalition with the Christian Democrats which has hurt the SPD and the working class. Even a $14 minimum wage was rejected by the CDU in 2019 as the coalition begins to collapse and activists elect a new leader who like Corbyn for Labour in Britain can revive the SPD around critical issues and clear policy for ordinary working class Germans. ...

Photographs and descriptions of a picturesque cycling tour through some of the best scenery in New York state all the way to Canada. From New York City head straight north by bicycle through Poughkeepsie and Albany to Rouse's Point and the Canadian border for a cycling route of 400 miles. The NYT shows Jane Margolies doing this bicycle route in small sections and having her husband drive her back, till she had reached the Canadian border. It is actually 2 sections- a Hudson Valley trail and a Champlain Valley trail that takes one to the Canadian border. A separate trail takes one from Albany to Buffalo. The entire stretch is 750 miles which was completed at a cost of $200 million. It showcases New York's history and natural beauty,
