In the Paris Olympics Mu was out with an injury and Keely had to race with Kenya's Mary Moraa who had come out ahead at the 2023 World Athletics in Budapest. In this race Keely runs alone to the finishing line.

Kessler says the assumption that pension systems such as Calpers (California Public Employees Retirement System), can make returns of 7.5% is fantasy considering that U.S. Treasury bonds are yielding 1.74%. Calpers reduced its expected rate of return on its portfolio to 7.5% fom 7.75% in June 2012. Public pension funds in Illinois use 8.18% for expected returns. U.S. public companies with defined benefit pension plan assets of $1.3 trillion use an expected rate of return of 7.5%, even though these assets have return of 5.6% since 2000. Kessler's estimate for expected rate of return is about 3%- fixed income yielding negative real rates of return and pulling returns down. For equities he estimates return at the total of inflation component at +2%, productivity component at +2%, and multiple expansion at -1% because interest rates are at zero.

Le Monde shows Fontainebleau Forest just 60 miles from Paris as a adaptable forest with ONF help 2025. ONF is the National Forestry Office in France, and its regional unit's deputy head, Mr. Boudin, describes how ONF has made this forest a lab for adaptable forests management. Its DEPERIS protocol puts drones over the forest to categorize 765 trees in categoreis from A to D. About 40% of the forest is suffering effects of shortage of water as the forest is on a sandy plain increasing the effects of drought and heat in summers. Another ONF plan is to plant 60,000 seedlings of downy oak, beech and other saplings each year, protecting areas of trees that need protection. In this way it is 20 years of other forests in other parts of the world.

Russian terms have not changed and call for Ukraine ceding territory and cutting its army. The EU and Germany, and Republicans in Congress are likely to oppose any capitulation by Ukraine after Russia launched the invasion, with Britain and France supporting Germany led by chancellor Merz.

U.S. unemployment declined to 7.7% in November 2012 from 7.9% the prior month, with 146,000 jobs created, according to the Labor Dept. The rate for the prior two months was revised downward by 49,000 jobs. The labor force dropped by 350,000 jobs, with fewer people looking for work, which suggests continued problems in finding jobs. The number of people saying they had a job fell by 122,000. The retail sector added 53,000 jobs, leisure and hospitality 23,000 and professional and business services 43,000.

This Times report looks at the management style of Jeff Bezos who started Amazon as a online store selling books and the extraordinary growth of the company. Bezos is stepping down from the day to day role of CEO to focus on new growth opportunities. His role as CEO will be taken by the head of the cloud computing business, Andy Jassy. He joined in 1997. Amazon was started in 1994.  Amazon's growth comes from carefully focussing on specific growth fields, first retail, then cloud computing, and changing the way business is run with innovative ways of conducting business. One click and Prime in retail, Kindle e reader in books, and massive investments in logistics, warehousing, cloud computing to run its business efficiently. During the pandemic criticism of low wages for warehouse workers was met with an increase in wages to $15 an hour.  Management style discourages meetings. Most meetings are held in the morning, and after 10 am. The person presenting is asked to hand out a six page memo which is read in silence before the meeting. The idea is that writing it out helps make the ideas clear. Decisions are made in this way. Employees are asked to think in innovative ways to run the business. Thrift is practiced as part of the Bezos way. Bezos is relatively young, only 57 years. Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1964 when his mother was in high school. His mother married a Cuban immigrant, Miguel Bezos 4 years later and the boy took the name Bezos. He spent much time at his grandparents ranch in South Texas working on the farm, and went to school at Princeton University, graduating in 1987. In 1993 he married Mackenzie Tuttle, a novelist, then started an online bookstore called Amazon from Seattle. Before this he worked at a telecom company and at a hedge fund, which helped him finance his new online bookstore. Bezos turned Amazon into a retail store selling a wide variety of merchandise, an built up a strong warehousing and delivery network. ...

Jennifer Harris, heads the Economy and Society Initiative of the William and Flora Foundation. Andy Grove of Intel and Bill Hewlett of Hewlett Packard are the original founders of what is called Silicon Valley in California. It was Andy Grove who offered the first protest of American policy that shifted jobs and manufacturing overseas, saying he did not want to live in a country where the people and the communities we live are being ignored under some policy that shifts everything and with it hopes and aspirations of the American people overseas to Asia. Farah Stockman of the NYT shows how Jennifer Harris and Jake Sullivan are shaping the new ideas on economic policy at the Biden administration. Jake Sullivan addressed the Brookings Foundation on Biden's economic policy saying Biden wanted different backgrounds to understand the needs of people in the US, that domestic needs for jobs and manufacturing, for infrastructure, would now drive foreign relations.
