U.S. Federal Reserve chairwoman, Janet Yellen, says the Fed's promise to be "patient" before raising interest rates means it will hold off for 2 months to check economic conditions before taking action. This would put the decision off till June 2015. The Fed will look at a range of factors including inflation, says Yellen. Yellen's comments to the Senate Banking Committee on Feb. 24, 2015 were- "I don't want to set down any single criterion that's necessary for rate increases to occur. We will be considering a range of evidence that pertains to the inflation outlook." In testimony Yellen said she wanted to be "reasonably confident" that inflation will return to 2% before raising rates. The Fed's measure of inflation, Commerce Department's personal consumption expenditures price index is below the 2% inflation target of the Fed for 52 of the past 68 months, and for 34 consecutive months.

France's new premier Francis Bayrou says in a policy speech to parliament yellow vest protests need to be heard and the pension reform of 2023 with large protests can also be debated and renegotiated. It is an effort to bring together all parties after the alienation of the last 2 years. Macron raised the pension age from 62 years to 64 but did not first get the support nationwide that was needed. 

Bayrou raises the deficit target to 5.4% from 5% under the Barnier government that lasted only 3 months and failed to win parliamentary support.

Fragmentation based on regions, has led to lack of economic development and enormous poverty in Asia over hundreds of years. The civil wars in Japan's history before the Meiji period, the civil war in China during the period between the wars with Japanese invasion and warlords controlling different regions, acted as barriers to development. The wars between different kingdoms with invasions across Afghanistan and the Punjab in India in the period before 1800, led to British divide and rule, and lack of investment in development by the British for 200 years. It created the fragmentation that acted as a barrier to industrial development and modernization, a barrier to the spread of education, science and technology in these regions. All three regions in East Asia and South Asia have Buddhist/Vedanta civilizations. The Barnier government's austerity plans, the budget cuts, shows Macron made a poor choice as the vote for National Rally and for the Socialist parties was to exactly the opposite to help the middle and working class in France. European Commissioner Michael Barnier calls for banning credit ratings on countries receiving financial aid. This comes after Moody's strongly downgraded Portugal's rating to Ba2 in July 2011.The downgrade was more severe than expected and comes right after the Greek parlaiment passed austerity measures in Greece. Moody's Ba2 rating suggests a 5 year default probability of 8.1% for Portugal, according to Deutsche Bank.

May says Mr. Corbyn of the Labour Party, that he was not really interested in finding a solution, and has given only one hour for talks in five weeks. The Irish prime minister Varadkar says May has not offered any solutions for Brexit. May says she will give parliament the chance to vote  for an extension of the March 29 date under Article 50 or decide if it wants a no-deal Brexit.

Britain's prime minister Theresa May finally spells out some of the costs to Britain's economy in following Brexit and leaving the European Union. The EU's Barnier made it clear that Britain would not be able to choose what it wants out of the negotiations. As May put is "there will be consequences for our market access."  So far May preferred ambiguity so that she could reconcile the conflicting factions in her Conservative party. The Labor Party in the Opposition and the EU have called for clarity on the issue of Northern Ireland, with the EU saying Northern Ireland would remain part of the EU customs union, and the Labor Party's Corbyn saying the fragile Ireland peace accords must be preserved and Ireland should have an open border. May did not clarify on the Irish issue. However her new remarks clarified that much of what exists today in cooperation inside the EU would be preserved to minimize negative consequences of Brexit, and Britain would also continue to be affected by the decisions of the European Court of Justice. Barnier says he welcomes May's explicit recognition for the first time of the tradeoffs involved in doing Brexit, something the pro-Brexit faction within the Conservative Party under Boris Johnson has tried to ignore. Experts including Bank of England governor Mark Carney have stated that Brexit will leave Britain's economy poorer.   ...

Even as Britain's testing has reached 436,000 September many people who need a test with symptoms are not able to get one. Here the leader of the House of Commons says he has to isolate after one of his children had symptoms but after his own test had to wait several days for the result. The British Health Minister, Mr. Hancock, says people who have no symptoms are going ahead to take a test causing the problem. He says he does not want to create a barrier for those needing a test to be able to get one without eligibility tests, but some form of prioritization may be needed.

Britain leaves the European Union on January 31, 2020, almost half a century after it joined the EU. There is a transition period till December 31, 2020 to work out the trading arrangements with the EU. Britain is asking for a trade deal similar to that which Canada signed with the EU recently. Boris Johnson says he would accept a "off-the-shelf" model first proposed by the EU negotiator Michael Barnier. 

The Canada model would mean an almost tariffs free trading arrangement which would include border checks, and which would exclude Britain's large services sector. This would be the ideal arrangement in the British view. The impact as estimated by the British Treasury is for the negative impact on the British economy to be minimal, for the British economy to be about 4.9% smaller over 15 years compared to having not left the EU. This might be offset by trade gains with trade deals made with other countries such as the U.S. and Japan.

Senators Murphy and Cornyn have helped pass legislation on gun control and mental health, public safety, with the support of all Democrats and 15 Senators from Republicans including majority leader McConnell. This comes after shooting in their home states and the two shootings at an elementary school and a supermarket in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York. The bill passed the Senate 65 to 34 and crossed the 60 vote filibuster threshold which was a barrier in the past. Only two senators from the 15 Republicans are up for election this year, Romney faces an election in 2024, four are retiring and 8 senators of the 15 are up for reelection in 2026. This made a compromise possible separating those who wanted strict gun control from those who want no gun control from the compromise group to achieve a consensus that all could vote for.

The longer you spend time with people talking in face to face interactions, or inhaling air aerosolized in the air from small droplets, the easier it is to get the virus. This means social distancing matters in a big way. Masks are a big way to cut the risk. This in depth report in The Times reveals that after Brexit talks between Lord Frost and Michael Barnier were getting nowhere on December 3 and the EU had increased its demands, Boris Johnson came up with the idea of a direct call between Johnson and Macron of France and Merkel of Germany, with the EU Commission president Leyen present. This was rejected after Macron spoke to Merkel and both decided they should stay united in their demands that Britain agree not to relax environmental or other rules to gain unfair competitive advantage after leaving the EU. The decision by France and Germany not to talk directly with Britain had been made. Leyen at the EU headquarters in Brussels was to convey the decision. Leyen offered to meet Johnson for a dinner discussion in Brussels. Johnson hesitated. He finally accepted knowing that this would show he had done everything possible and would have the support of all his ministers including ones that supported Remaining in the EU. The whole world thought that the EU was making a genuine last effort to get agreement, but this was not the case. During the dinner meeting Leyen just listened and listened, not saying much, as the EU strategy was to convey to the British that it was serious and not going to budge. This is where the situation is today on December 12, 2020. Cabinet ministers say the chances of any agreement before December 31, 2020, the date Britain leaves are just 30%, some even say 20%. Both sides are ratcheting up the pressure. The British have taken steps to increase patrol ships to 4 and the total fleet to 8 ships to patrol its Economic Zone in British waters looking for EU, mostly French fishermen. Britain would keep the French from fishing in its waters.   ...

More than 600,00 people in Hong Kong are expected to use their colonial era British National Overseas (BNO) status to seek the pathway to citizenship offered by the British government. The advocacy group HKB Hongkongers in Britain surveyed the city's residents hoping to take advantage of the program that starts in January 2021. The Home Office had expected this to be about 500,000 over 3 years. About 80% of those surveyed want to emigrate in 2 years, faster than expected. About 75% of them have university degrees and earn well above the city's average, so that they can contribute to the British economy. About 75% plan to travel with children. Only half have friends in the UK and few have family there. Compared to the influx of migrants into Germany this is likely to bring a fresh infusion of talent into the UK economy at a time when Britain is embarking on building trade with countries around the world after leaving the European Union. Germany had language classes and many problems to integrate migrants from Africa. There is no language barrier and cultural issues are also for the most part absent. The technical skills of Hongkongers with BNO status could add to the British economy in many unanticipated ways.   ...

Refugees in Germany are 3.48 million in 2024 at 4 percent of the population, government data shows. This is 60,000 more than in 2023.
