This report in The Guardian shows that ChatGPT is nothing new. The first version of this kind of generative AI was developed in 1966 at MIT by a computer scientist Weizenbaum, who called it Eliza. The buzz around it like that around ChatGPT was that it was thinking and acting on its own, the way humans like to think it did, but in fact Weizenbaum showed that it was simply code written to take what was given to the computer as input and spitting it out in a different way that made it look that it was acting on its own, when it clearly was nothing but parroting it out like a parrot. The issue of turning our world over to robots based on AI is controversial and even dangerous. A Japanese futuristic movie shows how the man who has written the code for the master computer that runs everything in Japan is disillusioned about it and finds himself in a nightmare world where the machine tries to isolate and eliminate the man who created it. Machines cannot think or have emotions like humans do and it is these emotions, rethinking, that the world depends on for its survival. Can anyone say that a machine would have made the decision that Chinese president Jinping just made in January of making a complete u turn and moving away completely from lockdowns into a complete opening with a plan that appears to have worked and is reviving China's economy following the street protests by informal groups including young women? ...

Without human consciousness Ai's simply lack the vital elements of what makes us human. So called intelligent behaviours don't amount to much in this the most important aspect of our behaviours that makes us human in the way we have evolved over long periods of time. A recent Japanese movie showed how even the creators of AI that runs things in a futuristic Japan find themselves trapped in an AI run society, and how AI fails Japanese society.

Rina Bliss, a professor of sociology at Rutgers, says while AI can bring information to kids it cannot make them think. To truly learn children will have to do it themselves and in interaction with teachers, parents and other children. She took the approach of a scientist and let her two children try out AI tools and software and came to this conclusion. One reason she says is that AI is based on computational intelligence and the human mind and brain are not quantifiable. The brain is flowing like a river and always learning from its environments.  There is a social environmental piece says Marin, there is interaction, there is a drive to know and connect, curiosity and passion that are part of learning.  Basically AI is developed through taking vast amounts of information collecting it and ordering it in a certain way. How each originator of the AI orders it affects how it will work. And what is in the basket of information collected will affect how it will work. There is no thinking brain outside of the human originator who put a particular version together. Like every piece of software there are implicit or explicit instructions on how to use the basket of information collected that is put in by an originator who developed the AI software. For these reasons it will only do basic tasks and is not intended for complex tasks that involve thinking processes and social-emotional aspects of human behaviour. The risks of using it begin to grow as soon as it is used for tasks it was never intended to perform such as replacing the human thinking  processes and the socio-emotional aspects of these processes.  If it is used to do things it was never intended for, the larger the activities it performs, the larger the mistakes and risks it it is liable to make or create. If it is assigned the task of transportation for a country, it will at some point be asked to think and at that point it will fail to make the right decisions, making the risks grow exponentially, very, very fast, leading to disaster. ...

A $100 billion infrastructure project to create a high tech manufacturing and freight corridor between New Delhi and Mumbai with a third of the money coming from Japanese public and private money will be announced this week during Japanese Prime Minister Abe's visit to India this week. Japanese investment in India is expected to rise from $515 million in 2006 to $5.5 billion in 2011. Lack of infrastructure has been a key constraint to investment in Indian manufacturing and this project hopes to address this problem. This would include airports, ports, and a high speed freignt line for the 1500 kilometres between New Delhi and Mumbai. CEO's from companies such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Canon, Hitachi have joine a new Japan-India business leader forum. Toyota plans to increase manufacturing capacity to 600,000 in India by 2015. Japan played a major role in the rapid modernization of Korea, China, and now is likely to do so in India as well.

Japan gets 90% of its oil from the Middle East, much of it from tankers going through the Straits of Hormuz. President Trump says Japan needs to contribute in patrolling costs for the waters in the region. Japan has good relations with Iran and has acted as an intermediary in talks between Iran and the U.S. A recent attack on a Japanese ship in the Gulf of Oman have led to Japan taking a more active role in the region. A Japanese destroyer will now patrol waters in the region as part of an effort by Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Forces.

The CEO of Abbott Labs which makes baby formula milk under different brands apologizes to the US public for the problems at its Sturgis, Michigan plant that led to the decision to shut down production at the plant. A deadly bacteria was found at the plant and Abbot Labs decided to close it down, leading to a shortage of baby formula in the US. US president Biden had supplies flown in from Germany to make up for the loss in supplies, brining in 15% of daily needs in the US. More flights are expected. The Sturgis, Michigan plant will reopen in June with a doubling of production capacity.

Benjamin Pavrd's 20 yard goal with France behind 2-1 against Argentina in the World Cup will be remembered as the goal of the tournament. Pavard's parents living near the Belgian border in a small town made great sacrifices, and travelled a lot to send Pavard out at 10 years to practice soccer with teams in France including Lille. 

He accepted an offer from Stuttgart after getting few opportunities to play in Lille. He was also made part of the 23 member team for France only when a player could not play due to injury.

Passed by Congress in 1964 the original bill for SNAP excluded sodas and luxury drinks, but had Sodas added back in by the Senate. By lobbyists even in 1964? SNAP schools program falls under the Agriculture Department. Democrats as well as Republicans appointed Agriculture Secretaries and not one took the action to get sodas excluded, to let states request sodas be excluded and approve it, not the Democrat a Carter, a Clinton, or an Obama, or a Republican a Reagan, a Bush, or a Trump (first term) took the necessary action. In 2025 Brooke Rollins is Agriculture Department Secretary. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee has seen the damage sodas can cause in her family. Rollins on her first day in office has finally acted- after 61 years when the original intentions of the SNAP bill's creators were confounded in the Senate.  On her first full day in office, urging them to propose pilot programs testing changes to food aid. It is at that point that the welcome center idea ran into opposition in this small town in Indiana, an hour from Indianapolis population 21,000 in Jackson County. As the town's population mix changes - it was 1% Hispanic in 1990, then 5% Hispanic in 2000- jumping in two decades of Bush-Obama-Trump-Biden to 25% Hispanic, questions besides economic about the sense of uneasiness of resident came up. Also of cultural literacy of the state of Indiana, and of the history of the state within the Union forged by Washington and Lincoln, FDR and Eisenhower, and of Wendell Wilkie of Elwood, Indiana. Issues were not about the economy alone, and about how many immigrants could be absorbed and the cultural and language literacy of arriving migrants. The US may just move on to other priorities if both Russia and Ukraine cannot come to terms on a ceasefire, says Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State. The crux of the problem from the beginning were eastern regions of Ukraine that are more Russian in culture than western Ukraine. On the Russian side it was a loss of respect from the capitalist states US, UK and Western Europe compared to its historical importance in Europe, as everything was measured in GDP terms. The last straw was NATO and Ukraine with its Russian connected history joining it. By drawing eastern Ukraine into its orbit Russia was responding to actions by US and the EU support for Kiev, ignoring Russian perspectives. On the Ukrainian side the issue came down to Ukraine being able to decide its own future. Because of corruption and mismanagement, poor governance what could have happened with a clean governance and efficient growth oriented leadership working with Russia and the EU never happened. The result was veering from a pro-Russian to a anti-Russian government following the Maidan protests in Kiev in 2013. Enter China by 2019 with support of US companies shifting almost the entire US industrial base to China. Putin was handed a rare opportunity to act with China's tacit support to push back the US and EU and their defense arm NATO. He decided to take it thinking this would end quickly with Ukraine capitulating. The loss of hundreds of thousands of young Russian youth in the land war led to Russia getting entrenched into this war. As has happened before Russia with it's greater population and resources has prevailed in Eastern Europe over centuries of warfare. This is the situation in 2025 when DJT seeks to end the war and bring peace to Ukraine. ...

How China is reviving memories of its struggles with Japan since 1900 and its efforts to modernize since 1950 under the leadership of the Communist Party led by Mao and Chou-en-Lai. Who were followed by 1990-2010 by a technocratic class of engineers and professionals, and now reverts back under XI Jinping -a son of one of the founders of the revolutionary armies that fought the Japanese- reverts back to its revolutionary ideologies that defined its emergence as a modern nation. Only American business interests fail to understand the China of president Xi Jinping because they like Tim Cook have not read or understood the modern history of China. In the book "Stilwell and the American Experience in China" by Tuchman, a lot of this can be experienced first hand as we see West point colonel Joe Stilwell experience China first hand since 1920's through the phase of nationalist sentiments, outright Japanese invasion, and the setbacks as North China and the Yangste Valley fall to Japan's Kwantung Army elements who run the government by 1939. Then comes the Second World War, Marshall is appointed chief of the Army by FDR in 1939 and he makes Stilwell brigadier general and responsible for China for the next 8 years. This is a China Stilwell loved and understood from daily contacts with the ordinary people of China that are on every page of this book. Jinping's father grew up in this way leading the revolutionary armies that fought the Japanese, and some of this passed on to his son even though he suffered from the Great Proleterian Cultural Revolution of the 1960's, but understood the significance of what his parent's generation had accomplished in creating modern China free of centuries of unimaginable poverty, indifference of the ruling classes, and oppression made worse by foreign powers. ...

DJT plans for 25% tariff on all imported cars goes into effect April 2, 2025. It is intended to promote additional investment in the US auto industry, boosting jobs and wages in the US. These countries have now wrapped their behavior around national sentiment even though they very well know how the US has looked out for Europe, and especially China throughout cataclysmic events in the 20th century and the 21st century such as foreign occupation and failures in modernization. By 2015 the US which had given Europe the Marshall Plan and helped Japan rebuild from the ashes of World War II, South Korea rebuild from the devastation of the Korean war, and China rebuild after the failed industrialization experiments of the 1960's and 1970's, was now facing nations that only saw this as a One Way Street, making the US look stupid and showing a degree of irresponsible behaviour on fentanyl, drug and migrant trafficking  by Canada Mexico and China that has few parallels in history. The narrative from the US is that the US allowed Europe, Japan and South Korea, and Mexico as a manufacturing base for these countries 25 years since the 1970's when Japanese Toyota vehicles made inroads into the US market to help these countries recover, a post Marshall Plan benefit given to Europe and Asia. During 1995-2015 a series of weak administrations Clinton-Bush-Obama allowed the US manufacturing base to decline under a falsely premised globalization that served US financial interests but hurt US manufacturing towns and communities across the country.  This means BMW, VW cars imported from Germany, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, Honda cars from Japan, Hyundai and Kia cars from South Korea, Chinese EV vehicles, and cars made in Mexico for Asian and European makers, all will face this tariff. ...

After all the media talk about tariffs inflation- inflation is at 2.4% in May 2025. Tariffs was part of the toolbox of strategies under Lighthizer and Jamieson on getting fair world trade, and not like Congressman Hawley in the 1920's who understood little about the workings of the US economy. This fact the official media such as the WSJ and NYT, Wash Post, BBC need to get it right about the Hawley Tariffs. Hawley was born in rural Oregon in 1864 went to country schools, and was president of Willamette University in Salem, when it's population was 4258. As House Ways and Means Committee chairman he wrote the failed tariffs bill Hoover signed in 1930. DJT's US Trade Representative Lighthizer in 2016 led the successful negotiations with Japan under Reagan, Scott Bessent who leads negotiations on tariffs with China with USTR Jamieson, has a deep understanding and grasp of today's financial markets. Tariffs is one of the tools in the US toolbox to get Japan, China, South Korea to even the playing field for US companies and bring back manufacturing to the US. Without it China would not budge from its unfair advantage and would not negotiate in fairness. This is proven in the way Japan in the 1980s and China today are responding to the US position preparing their economies for not relying on sudden surges in exports putting whole industries and workers in America and Europe out of work and out of jobs. DJT says- "No we are not going to accept that," the EU is catching on and adopting a similar position, China knows that.  The media is irresponsible in presenting tariffs in a negative way, irresponsible to American workers the 10 million put out of work since 2000, and to American families and the Nation.   ...

The Wall Street Journal has examined 77 businesses in which Bain Capital invested during 1984-1999, the period in which Mitt Romney headed the firm. Its findings show that 22% of the firms filed for bankruptcy by the eighth year after Bain first made its investment, some with large job losses. Additional 8% of the firms were in such bad shape that Bain lost all of its invested capital. Only a small number of firms produced most of the returns- 70% of the gains come from 10 firms. Of these 10 firms, four were later found in bankruptcy court. Another aspect mostly overlooked is that where large job gains were made they were mostly in lower wage retail jobs at Domino's Pizza, Staples and Sport's Authority, and did not involve the kind of innovation that produces sustained advantages.
