The first year of the Modi administration in India brings a sense of moderation to high expectations following the election, considering the many problems that need to be tackled. It also brings some help in the form of lower oil prices coming at a critical time for the Indian economy, which is overly dependent on oil imports. This enabled the government to cut fuel subsidies and control its budget deficit. By April 2015 inflation declined to 4.87%. Foreign direct investment increased by 25% to $28.8 billion in 2014-2015 fiscal year. Major steps include deregulating prices of diesel, petroleum and cooking gas, increasing foreign ownership limits for defense and insurance sectors to 47%, and opening 125 million new bank accounts for poor households. Coalfield leases and telecom spectrum allocations which suffered from lack of transparency and sold at low prices under the previous administration were reallocated in a transparent process.

Allan Meltzer, a former economic adviser to President Reagan, and an expert on monetary policy at Carnegie Mellon School of Business says that "this is scare tactics to try to do something that is in the private but not the public interest, its terrible." Vincent Reinhart a former Fed economist says Paulson has lost credibility, people don't believe him anymore. And Elmendorf of the Brookings institution says that taxpayers should get more out of this deal with ownership stakes in the companies that use government money. Others like Bruce Bartlett, a former White House economist under president Reagan say the problem is nobody knows what the hell is going on and there are some naive assumptions about how this would function. Martin Bailly, a former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under President Clinton says for financial institutions to take the funds Treasury has to pay a premium because otherwise they would have sold already. While Bernanke told the Banking Committe that the government would pay more than the distressed prices to get broad participation which is a goal of Treasury and the Fed, neither he nor Paulson could reassure the committee about how taxpayers would be protected. Most of the economists surveyed here by the NYT are skeptical about a Wall Streeter from Goldman Sachs credibility on this as they see him paying financial institutions a premium price. The sore point in all this for the taxpayers and the public would be that the Bush administration has done nothing to help homeowners with foreclosures that are also at the root of the problem when you look beyond the immediate clogging up of the financial system and present a threat via declining home prices. And Paulson now offers a plan that also is very hazy about protecting taxpayers with equity ownership or some other protections, and has nothing to assuage the public's outrage about ceo compensation in the midst of distress. Not just the Banking Committee but experts from all sides of the political spectrum are raising concerns stressing one or other of these points, and find the lack of details in the Paulson Bernanke plan a sign of a hastily put together plan with little research even considering the lack of time, and the lack of any details a strain on people's intelligence for a proposal of such magnitude....

Romney picks seven term Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate for the 2012 U.S. presidential election. It is a daring pick because Ryan has clear ideas about reducing the U.S. deficit which are in sharp contrast to the approach taken by Obama and Biden, offering American voters a clear choice. This is similiar to the contrasting choices between Reagan-Bush and Carter-Mondale during a period of high unemployment and inflation in the 1980 presidential election. As airlines charge for food they are getting more feedback from customers and they are collecting this feedback to learn what customers want and what kinds of food to carry. Delta and Midwest and US Airways are lloking at different food options that are healthier and liked by customers. Delta and Midwest have hired Chefs from restaurants to come up with better nutritional and flavorful dishes that will appeal to customers. Customers who take longer flights or who change planes with very little time to get food in the stopover time are dependent on getting something good from the airline food or staying hungry. These travellers are willing to pay more for better food. The whole shift to having customers pay for food may result in better food choice and menus which are healthier and flavorful. Certain kinds of foods don not hold up in an airplane environment and chefs are experimenting with menus and choices that will be best suited for this. One traveller faulted American for serving a huge cookie thats like a half pound size. It shows how little thinking goes on in airline offices about the food thats served. Obama outlined his views on fuel efficiency goals in his speech to the Detroit Economic Club in May 2007. The thinking of the new President on this issue developed in the last few years as he met with different environmental and conservation groups and studied what was happening in the area of energy. He has used Paul Volcker, Austin Gollsbee, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, and Joshua Steiner, a former Treasury official with abackground in restructuring, as advisors during the bailout discussions. His speech at the Detroit Economic Club faulted the UAW for joining with management in continuing to stall development of fuel efficient automobiles as retooling costs were high and the companies were being required to support high retiree and health benefits costs. In effect the management-UAW staus quo of continuing to turn out the same mix of pickup trucks and SUV's and leaving the gap in small and medium sized cars without the necessary invesments to turn out winners, may have led GM into the situation it faced even before the credit crisis, when sales of larger vehicles just went over the cliff. ...

Will Detroit automakers be able to respond to a change in consumer preferences and a shift to cars from SUV's and light trucks? Gasoline prices are expected to rise significantly in 2011, and could approach $4 a gallon. The Detroit carmakers are better prepared now than in 2008. The question is are they prepared enough considering that there was a renewed emphasis on light trucks and SUV's in the lineup of Detroit carmakers in 2010, and compared to Asian competitors in the market whose focus is still on cars. To rebound to profitability GM and Ford took advantage of a pickup in SUV and light truck sales. Chrysler benefitted from a revamped Jeep Cherokee. All three Detroit carmakers sold more light trucks and SUV's than cars in 2010, and GM's car sales went down in 2010. By comparison Toyota and Honda sold more cars than SUV's and light trucks in 2010, and Hyundai does not make any light trucks. Toyota brand US sales head, Bob Carter, says as vehicles are becoming more fuel efficient across all sizes he does not expect the impact to be as dramatic as in 2008. The impact of fuel prices is becoming evident at some Toyota dealerships where sales of Prius vehicles are up significantly. In 2007 before a gas price surge SUV and truck sales were at 53% in the US market, they were down to 47% in 2009, and are now back up to 50%....

Now in March 2008 it appears that defaults on construction loans by smaller regional and local banks to single family home builders is spreading across the nation to the point where it may bring the credit squeeze for home, auto and credit card loans to local communities in smaller towns across America. This will be further slowdown not just housing but consumption at the local Walmart and retail stores. Loans to single family home builders went down from a peak about 2 years ago of $350 billion to about $250 billion in 2007. now the delinquencies on these loans is 8% in the 4th quarter 2007 according to Foresight Analytics. Its much higher at 14% in states like Ohio and Michigan. The Atlanta afffiliate of National Home Builders Association says that 20% of these builders are late in payments in that area. In states like Florida, Arizona and Arkansas, and Minnesota the delinquencies is at 10%. Note that the highly reputed ones like the Levitt and Sons that built Levittown in the post war period are also taking bankruptcy as banks are calling in their loans to be paid in full when they see builders losing money. What first appeared as signs of trouble in the Cleveland area is now spreading across the nation. Mr Whitlatch who studied planning at the University of Pennsylvania and went into building homes in the Clevelad area since 1969 is one of the home builders who is declaring bankruptcy after 9 million dollars in debt and using up $2 million of his own money and now selling off his family home. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been authorized by the Bush Administration to put $200 billion into the mortgage market to keep things from getting worse in the housing market but much of the damage is already underway. How else will this affect local economies the local banks will be in trouble. Analysts estimate that about 150 local smaller and regional banks will go under in the next 3 years. Compared to this about 900 local banks went under in the S&L crisis over 5 years. It will put new stress on the local communities and their economy in coming months and years as the economic crisis goes from big cities to smaller towns and communities throughout America. ...

Indian foreiign minister S Jaishankar meets with his counterpart Wang Yi in Dushnabe, Uzbekistan, to restore peace in border region of Ladakh after the violent clash in 2020. Jaishankar tells China not to view ties with India through "the lens of a third country." China agrees. Jaishankar was actively involved in setting up cultural and other Sino-Indian contacts in Chinese cities when he was Indian ambassador to China.
