French president Macron makes remarkable efforts to bring Rouhani of Iran and Mr. Trump together for new negotiations. French technicians set up the phone connections between the two leaders at the Millenium hotel where Rouhani was staying in New York for UN General Assembly meetings and Macron personally went to the hotel to get the two to talk. Mr. Trump made the call to Rouhani after talks with Macron. Rouhani however did not accept the call as he said the U.S. had to agree to some preconditions before this could happen.

China's Defense Minister Gen. Wei and Mr. Austin, US Defense Secretary are to meet on the sidelines of a conference in Singapore in 2022. Mr. Wei last met Defense Secretary Mark Esper in 2019 in Bagkok. No meetings have taken place since then. Gen. Wei is seen as an outspoken leader who told a conference in 2019 that the use of the military to stop the Tiananmen protests in Beijing in 1989 was the right step as this gave Chine three decades of peaceful development.

Boris Johnson leads by a wide margin for election of a leader of the Conservative Party to succeed Theresa May as prime minister. Ms. May announced that she will set a date to resign from the leadership of the party after another Brexit vote in parliament. Mr. Johnson who has 39% support with Mr. Raab at 13%. Johnson favors a no-deal Brexit and no customs union arrangement with the European Union. His pro-Brexit wing lacks the support of other factions in his party and in parliament.

Most young Latinos identify with their country of origin, Mexican, Dominican, Cuban or some other country, rather than as Americans. This comes from aPew Hispanic Center report on "How Young Latinos Come of Age in America." High rates of pregnancy with about one in four Hispanic girls getting pregnant by the age of 19 still holds back Latinos. 52% favored country of origin as preference over 24% favoring American. Latinos represent an ethnic group with one in four newborns, and one in five schoolchildren.

Stancati and Walker report from Rome on Italy's latest election and the change in government as Giorgia Meloni wins 26% of the vote to form a new government. Her Brothers of Italy party has links to 1930's Italy, which Meloni is attempting to transform into a modern version that speaks for mothers, the Catholics and Italy. Italy has seen 70 governments in a short period with a highly fragmented and changing political scene. The analysis in BBC says this government could last only as long as it retains the support of people as governments have changed so quickly in Italy. Her partners in her coalition Mr. Berlusconi and Mr. Salvini have also won and lost public opinion in different periods in the last decade.

An example of the insensitivity of tech manufacturers to needs of schools. Chromebooks that were once presented as a low cost option for PC's in schools at about $300 are no longer what they used to be. The expiration dates for hardware that may be working makes them useless in school districts that purchase them only a couple of years before the expiration. They are increasingly being founded in scrap or E-Waste, says this report in WSJ. Macbooks or PC's are a better option because after a few years they can still be worth hundreds of dollars and they can be used and are supported for many years. The cost of sending chromebooks to scrap heaps because of expiration dates could be costing school districts $1.8 billion.

This WSJ report looks at the staggering waste that come from expiration dates on food. A 2019 Harvard-Hopkins study shows over 80% of people occasionally throw out food with expired date and close to 40% do so usually. About 54% think it is unsafe if expired. Where do these dates come from? Contrary to first impressions it is not mandated and it does not mean unsafe if expired. It matters because it means waste, and also adds to climate change and disposal. Over 6 billion pounds are wasted each year from expiration and another 6 billion from leaving it out too long out of about 80 billion pounds wasted each year. Keep the refrigerator at 37  degrees and store food in the refrigerator, suggests WSJ.

About a quarter of renter households in America spend about 50% of income on housing, according to Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.The availability of apartments for rent less than $1000 in the Phoenix region of Arizona is nonexistent says this report in WSJ. It forces renters into apartments that are more expensive than they can afford. Rents are up over 30% in recent years. A temporary loss of job or a medical emergency can lead to back rent accumulating and an eviction notice. Eviction notices are rising in sunbelt cities such as Phoenix, Las Vegas. Also in cities such as Minneapolis and Columbus. Higher rents lead to more evictions as tenants fail to ride it out with a job loss or medical emergency.

WSJ report on Robert Kennedy Jr's efforts to remove artificial dyes in cereals used by Kellogg, General Mills, that are harmful to health and wellbeing of children and adults. RFK Jr is the nominee for Secretary Health and Human Services. Cereal made in Canada for Fruit Loops uses natural ingredients juice from carrots, water melon and blueberries to get the same colors. In the US artificial dyes are still used. When General Mills stopped using artificial dyes in Trix it changed the color and tasted bland according to food scientists in the company, leading to consumers not supporting the change. Large cereal companies are not taking the action needed when it comes to educating the public about the need for the change and making changes for healthy cereals.

Tariffs are unconventional tools for border security yet appropriate in situations such as these. Canada could have done this before a 25% tariff was announced by DJT- it would have been common sense for Canada to do what it did after the tariff before the tariff- put 10,000 frontline personnel at the Canadian border with the US, appoint a minister in charge of drug flows and fentanyl, and list cartels as terrorists. Considering the damage to the US from the border it was imperative that Canada, and Mexico took responsibility for the borders a long time ago. 

Within 24 hours of the Trump announcement of 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico the leaders of the two countries turned around to do what should have been done a long time back.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff was critical of the S.E.C.'s practice of entering into consent judgements which allowed defendents to not admit to wrongdoing. In his order Judge Rakoff rejected a $285 million settlement with Citigroup for a mortgage-bond deal. In his order he said such settlements are viewed by the business community as "a cost of doing business." He found it hard to discern what the S.E.C. would be getting out of such a settlement "except a quick headline." Rakoff summarized the problem with such settlements and the S.E.C.'s practices when it comes to the public's interest: "In any case like this that touches on the transparency of financial markets whose gyrations have so depressed our economy and debilitated our lives, there is an overriding public interest in knowing the truth.
