Krugman addresses the question about the collapsing ruble in December 2014- why the extent of the collapse reflected more than the drop in oil prices? He focusses on the nature of the Russian system under Putin which is based on crony capitalism. Russian businesses borrowed heavily in dollars but generate much of their revenue in rubles, as a result the situation has imploded with the inability of these businesses to make payments as the ruble declined by about 50%. Russia has not generated trade deficits. Capital flight, money taken out of the country by oligarchs, and the nature of the borrowing in foreign currency has led to a serious compounding of the crisis.

This piece in Der Spiegel points out that Brexit may be an opportunity if European leaders recognize that there can be different levels of unity, and that different countries in the EU can advance at their own pace with Germany and France providing a core group. There is no longer the need for continual enlargement of the European Union as has happened before. It also offers a time to take some deep breaths and reflect on the progress so far and where it has come short, what to do about it, such as the bureaucracy that has grown in Brussels, the different views on immigration, and public sentiment. Actually the whole progress towards the European Community, and then the European Union has evolved over time. In the immediate postwar years, after one setback Adenauer once said during the difficult negotiations in 1951-52 between France and Germany to set up the European Coal and Steel Community, predecessor of the European Community and the European Union- "arme Europa, arme Europa," (poor Europe, poor Europe). The Dutch and Belgian delegates had strong differences for the headquarters for the ECSC- Turin was rejected, Liege and Brussels were proposed, until Monnet was made head of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community with headquarters in Luxembourg. Monnet himself considered stepping down a couple of times because of differences, and the Editor of Le Monde described Monnet's plans for European integration as "a leap in the dark." This was the first of many difficult steps in the evolution of the European Union. Nationalist feeling was nothing new, as the Gaullists opposed Monnet's drive for European unity when it differed from their ideas. Still Monnet persevered and progress took place every ten years as it must now.  ...

Spanish banks agreed to reforms and job cuts as a condition for a 37 billion euro loan from the eurozone bailout fund, the European Stability Mechanism. The restructuring plan applies to Bankia, Novagalicia Banco, Catalunya Banc and Banco de Valencia, with the largest job cuts at Bankia bank. Bankia will have 6000 job cuts, 28% of the total employees, and cut branches by 39%. Banco de Valencia will be absorbed into Caixabank and receive 4.5 billion euros of the loan payment approved.

Lack of aggressive plans for renewable energy of Exxon, Chevron are leading to criticism after big profits. DW.com estimates the profits at $200 billion for oil companies. BP's reversal on renewable energy is coming under criticism. There is a sense that the oil companies are profiting from public misery says DW.com, and calls for windfall taxes. Windfall taxes could help bridge some of the UK government's budget problems and there are calls from Labour for the windfall tax in Britain.

Wellsville is 80 miles south of Rochester, New York. The town of 7000 made parts for coal fired power plants for 100 years till the impact of climate change led to decline. Today it is recovering from the loss of jobs as it is building parts for wind turbines. It is a very Republican area and one resident says Republicans were quick to say that anything renewable, wind or solar was bad. Gradually there is a sense that the town can thrive once more.

A UN Security Council ceasefire resolution passes with the US abstaining. It passed 14-0 including Algeria the only Arab country in the Security Council vote. It calls for immediate ceasefire and immediate release of all hostages. The other countries in the non permanent 10 members included Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Slovenia, Guyana, Mozambique. This resolution supports the US efforts through working with Qatar and Egypt to reach a solution with a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance to the civilian population.

Indian Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal says India represents only 2% of overall global exports. This means there is a great opportunity today to double this even as global trade slows because of the small size it is now and the policy of resilient supply chains sought by the US and EU. NASA technologists say cost constrains can be useful in planning moon missions. India's Chandrayan 3 cost $70 million for the moonlanding and the Vikram rover scientific research on the lunar surface. Progress is made through an incremental approach as Chandrayan 2 was based on the lessons from Chandrayan 1 which lost contact from lunar orbit, and Chandrayan 3 learning from the landing failure on the lunar surface of Chandrayan 2. Segregated enclaves are considered "parallel societies" that do not fit into Danish culture or Danish law.  In the past these immigrant communities stayed separate culturally from the rest of the country where people did not learn Danish and participate in the wider society, and yet benefitted from the welfare system's benefits. Part of this change is that two thirds of Latinos in Arizona were born in the US and 40% of Latino immigrants are naturalized citizens. Ruben Gallego, Latino activist, took a different approach to immigration enforcement criticizing the Biden administration for not forcefully tackling the surge at the Border in 2022. By 2023 he supported bipartisan legislation that was negotiated by Feb 2024, which by that time failed to get full support. The return of migrants to their home countries was not properly addressed in the legislation.

Flamanville 3 in Normandy is a new generation nuclear reactor in France. The last one was Civaux 2 in southwestern France. This is reactor with new safety standards and more productive. It produces 1600 megawatts MW enough for 2 million homes. The complexity- 12 years after original schedule and cost 13.6 billion euros instead of 3.3 billion euros. 

France gets 60% of its energy from nuclear unlike Germany which closed 3 of its last nuclear reactors under policy of Merkel.

Akio Toyoda of Toyota Motor praises prime minister Abe's "tremendous leadership," as Abe takes a drive in the hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Mirai in the front lawn of the premier's residence in Tokyo, Japan. Toyota benefits from the yen at 110 to the dollar as this generates higher profits from exports. Sales in 2014 were $230 billion, and net profit $18 billion. Prime minister Abe's economic program depends on companies and their suppliers increasing wages, especially companies with a supplier base as large as Toyota with estimated 1.35 million employees at suppliers in Japan. Toyoda says "both the government and the private sector are of one mind in fighting deflation." Toyota's wage increases in 2014 were only 0.8%. In 2015 hope are high that Toyota will take stronger action. Toyota has refrained from asking suppliers for price cuts in fall 2014, and is likely to do so in spring 2015, so that its suppliers can raise wages. Toyota's 65,000 employees are pushing for a 1.7% monthly base salary increase in April, with bonuses and seniority adjustments bringing the wage increase up to 4%....

The repeated denials by VW officials from global headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, and from VW in the U.S., since 2012- when the problem of higher emissions on roads compared to emission test readings first came to public attention- show that VW management took the problem lightly. The deep consequences of such a move to hide real emissions, not just from the EPA but from unwary buyers, appears to have been entirely missed by management. Even when the issue was raised by the EPA, VW stated to EPA that the differences in results on roads vs actual emissions tests were technical flaws. In December 2014 VW even made a voluntary recall of half million diesel vehicles. Yet the high emissions on roads continued till VW officials told EPA about the software that was the real cause in August 2015. Even then VW officials offered to personally apologize, and asked for certification of 2016 models in the U.S., missing entirely the deep consequences of their actions. VW now says that the software to conceal the real emissions was installed on 11 million vehicles worldwide. VW management has set aside $7.7 billion as provision for penalties. The VW stock declined by 35% by September 22, 2015....

Its clear from the task force's rejection of the plan GM submitted in March 2009, that the restructuring at GM was moving too slowly, too many brands, too many dealerships, no clear idea of what the new GM should look like. And a wistful look back to the past that clouded every decision. Wagoner and his team could not leave the old GM behind and clung onto too many brands, plants, dealerships, and sales numbers that were too optimistic at every turn of the economy, even as they were lowered. The task force said GM was "far too slow" to adapt and that "a substantially mmore aggressive restructuring plan" was required. That GM was just a year ago 2008 about this time still thinking in terms of sales numbers that would match Toyota's, as the largest carmaker in the world, shows how this wistful looking back at the past may have blinded GM to all the potentially dangerous bets that it was making, wihtout realizing it. Bets that the huge gap between the US carmakers and the Japanese and the Europeans in fuel efficiency and the technologies that went with it, would not someday come to hurt GM. Bets that the numbers game could be played without huge risks, that incentives related sales couild simply be inflating the market now with bigger risks ahead. That simply relying on sales revenue to support unsustainable retiree and union costs would be another dangerous bet on unsustainable sales numbers of a16 million market. The other large industrialized societies were seeing shrinking car sales, Japan, Germany, are prime examples, where sales are nowhere what they were at the peak in the postwar recovery of these industrialized countries. See the links/groups to these two countries car markets. Had GM considered the prospect of similiar declines in the US? Even if the car sales had remained at levels much lower than 16 million without the consumer buying spree and incentives, the market would be shrinking, the sales inflation simply made the sales fall that much steeper, hitting the 40% range. ...

in Areddy's piece yesterday the 24th in the WSJ he cites 100,000 accounts opening on average this month. NYT here cites 300,000 accounts opening each day. At 300,000, there would be about 50 ,illion new accounts in 6 months and 100 million new accounts in 12 months. Using the 100 million accounts currently open in the Areddy peice we have adoubling to 200 millon accounts in 12 months. What is the right number, and does anybody really know for sure. Anderson of UBS is quoted as saying only 10% of household wealth is tied up in the market, but at something like 200 million accounts, and speculative fever for another 12 months, this could end up with a big chunk of urbanized Chinese the ones most likely to be in the market. If we double the figure of $50 billon in daily stock trading we could see $100 billion in daily stock trading a year from now. The hidden part of the picture is whether Chinese banks have lent heavily to stock market speculators who would be unable to repay the loans in an adverse event and leave the banking sector in worse shape than it is now. Shang, and Guo at the Chinese Securities Regulatory commission and the China Construction Bank are likely to follow Zhou as Governor at the Central Bank. ...

It will making immigration issues fade by 2027 and help Germany's economy rebound with investments in key areas.  Merkel and Merz are very different leaders. Merkel a pastor's daughter with a physics background lacks the business background in capital markets of Merz and the ability to understand the mood and thinking of Germans in the industrial west and south of the country and in Bavaria's Munich region (CSU). ...

About two thirds of China is urban people but only 48% have residency rights, meaning about 250 million people are not getting the benefits of schools, pensions and healthcare in cities. Ministry of Human Resources shows only 22% of migrant workers have these benefits.  There are about 67 million Chinese children left behind by their parents in rural areas as they search for jobs in cities. These children do not see their parents often, sometimes not at all in a particular year. They have suffered lack of parental attention and have poorer schooling. In 2024 as some of these children grew up and became migrants themselves they did not want want happened to them happen to their children, and delay having children.  China's government considered rural couples as a good way to makeup for low birthrates. This has been proved not to be the case. China's household registration system is call hukou- it restricts access to healthcare and schools for migrants and discourages migrans who live in factory dorms or other restricted housing arrangements from taking children with them. Rural incomes are less than half of urban $3000 vs $7000 a year. ...

This is the classic of the 30's and 40's that won independence for India by bringing forward a new generation of leaders that would bring India forward in the 20th century. These hopes rested on the shoulders of Congress and Jawaharlal Nehru yet fell by the wayside after the early 1960's with China's invasion in 1962, India faltered with socialist ideologies and the License Raj, stymying the energies of the people, corrupt political life leading to stagnation. By late Atal Bihari Vajpayee offered an alternative and hope following the models set by Mahatma Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel in word and deeds with the first non Congress governments setting the stage for Modi in 2014. ...
