"That society should bring about change, not just government." Christopher Nolan's Odyssey film now in theaters in the US was inspired by Emily Wilson's recent translation of the Greek writer Homer's epic poem of the ten years of struggle getting back home to Ithaca from the Trojan War. Emily Wilson is a professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Here she reads passages from her translation and answers questions about her version of the epic poem. She is the first woman to translate Homer's epic. Wilson brings a unique perspective to the translation from a woman's viewpoint- she expresses views on the women in the epic poem and slaves. She sees a different Odysseus from the brave adventurer who overcome years of adventures and hardship to get back home. She starts with the line - "He is a complicated individual" and says in the interview and remarks her e that she wanted to put everything in the modern style of simple prose, something that can be clearly understood and not need to be guessed at as in a poem.  ...

I write this comment as Founding Editor of Lyrarc.com. Lyrarc.com would not have been possible without the work of Neil Kinnock's mentor Michael Foot and his brother Dingle Foot. In the same way that Andy Burnham says he would not have entered politics and would not have joined Labour without the impression on him left by Kinnock, I can say that I would not have founded Lyrarc.com without the impression left on me by Sir Dingle Foot when I first met him in Colombo, Ceylon in 1966. What Michael Foot did for Labour, Dingle Foot did for the whole of Asia bringing forward looking ideas and a passion for the people of Asia that can only be compared to Gen. Joe Stilwell's passion for China and the Chinese people in their struggles in the 20th century since 1900. Sir Dingle Foot is not with us as Neil Kinnock is, but his impressions live on with me from his letters in his own handwriting to me from the 1960's, a period when decolonization in Asia and Africa was still happening. I think of Gandhi and the British agent in Rajkot, Sir Frederic Lely who helped him study in London and gain the knowledge of British ideas that led him to writing "Hind Swaraj" on a steamship from London to South Africa. Today Lely's name cannot be found on the internet but it is there at the Gandhi Museum in Porbandar, India- which means in the world of AI models trained on Wikipedia there are things one will never know that are vital to understand and continue the work of building the Modern World for the US, UK, India and China. Andy Burnham of Labour says "I am Ready." He also told Labour and the British Nation: "I have a Plan." Even before he assumes office The Burnham Programme is on the web. Burnham has implemented it in the North in Manchester. He is now bringing it to all of Britain. What Thatcher did had reverberations in the US with Reagan. What Boris Johnson did had reverberations in US with DJT. What Andy Burnham does in Britain will have reverberations in US, Europe, and the World.    ...

These numbers are real 11.5 million manufacturing jobs in 2009 vs 19.5 million manufacturing jobs in 1980- 44% of the US supply chain base destroyed and recovery to 12.69 million in 2026. Automation is only a small part of the story, as China's factories are heavily automated, it was first deliberate policy of the administrations of  Bush, Clinton Bush, and Obama. In April 1989 as shown in Labor Department graph on this page there were 18 million jobs a loss of 1.5 million. The major damage was done under the two Bush and Clinton, Obama administrations, that looked the other way having no grasp of the significance of this development and following misguided economic theory, ignoring what was happening in front of their eyes in plain sight.

Boeing is working out pricing on its new 777X jet to include the fuel efficiency savings made by airlines using the new aircraft. The new plane would save 20% more fuel per seat than the current 777 jets. Airlines spent $210 billion on fuel in 2012. About half the cost of a long range flight is on fuel.The Dreamliner price is at about $290 million. The 777X could be priced around $400 million, with discounts bringing this down to above $200 million for the 400 seat aircraft. Earlier pricing efforts by Boeing on the 787 Dreamliner were based on manufacturing costs going down with a significant portion of work done by suppliers. After problems in manufacturing, supplier issues and the learning curve, Boeing will take a more conservative approach to pricing this time without the steep discounts in earlier periods. In pricing the A320neo EADS passed on half of the fuel efficiency savings to buyers, and only half added to the price.
