Companies with good credit ratings are paying higher interest rates and others are finding it harder to borrow as investors flock to safe Treaury bills and government debt. And in 2009 about $700 billion in debt has to be refinanced. Southwest Airlines needed $400 million partly to cover losses from betting that fuel costs would remain high. It is the only domestic airline with an investment grade rating. It had to pay interest of 10.5%, twice the rate it paid in 2004 to raise $350 million. It is doing the borrowing now because its CFO says it does not know what the credit markets will be like 6 months or a year from now. Corporations borrowed $172.7 billion in the 4th quarter, down from $179.1 billion in the last 3 months of 2007, with businesses trying to borrow ahead of further deterioration in credit markets and overcrowding as the government steps up its borrowing to meet the needs of the $825 billion stimulus spending. Lufthansa sees profit drop 599 million euros in 2008, compared to 1.66 billion euros in 2007. 2007 sales were inflated by 500 million euros in asset sales. 2008 sales also reflect awritedown on the stake in Jet Blue Airways of the USA. Sales rose 11% to 24.87 billion euros, boosted by consolidation of Swiss International. Lufthansa plans to takeover Austrian Airlines, increase its holding in BMI, and acquire astake in SN holding, the parent company of Brussels Airlines.

Airline capacity is shrinking, and the delays in the Airbus and Boeing fuel efficient planes development and introduction means even less capacity. This year airlines will have retired one plane for every two being added, last year about 1 planes was retired for every 4 being added according to Aero Transport Data Bank, a French infomation company. The Wright Amendment is a 1979 law named after its sponsor U.S. House Speaker, Jim Wright, that restricts flights out of Love Field in Dallas to nine states. The idea was to give a distinct advantage to American to build a giant hub in Dallas at DFW International Airport without having to worry about competitors taking off from Love Field charging lower fares. American is able to charge higher fares out of Dallas than from other cities. Southwest is fighting to have the law overturned with a campaign. In the early years Southwest was a discount commuter airline to 4 cities and catering to Dallas area business customers. Southwest founder refrained from fighting the Wright Amendment because of American's superior financial and political influence in Congress. It is only as it has grown tremendously that the Wright Amendment has looked more and more "ridiculous" in CEO Kelly's words.
