Haberman and Thrush of the NYT provide an account of what happened at the White House when U.S. president Trump met privately with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi to work out a deal on the Dreamers, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, called DACA, that under president Obama allowed 800,000 young immigrants to stay in the country. President Trump had earlier said he would reverse DACA. DACA was setup under an executive order by president Obama in 2012 to allow immigrant children brought in under the age of 16 to stay in the country, with maximum age 30. In 2014 a second executive order by president Obama expanded this to include children under the age of 18, with no maximum age. Both executive orders were opposed by Republicans. In the meeting Chuck Schumer answered Trump's question on delaying or changing Trump's mind on DACA, "what's in it for me?"  Schumer said Democrats would work with Trump on new legislation on border security, but not on funding for a border wall. Trump agreed to work on a deal, including no deportations for a six month period. After different back and forth in the media, typical of the politics in immigration issues, the president says he is ready to work out a deal on DACA, if the Democrats work with him on toughening border security. Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress now agree that steps have to be taken on border security in stages. ...

Banks in the US are moving away from cryptocurrency and shunning connections with the cryptocurrency business after a regulatory crackdown by the SEC and public warnings about its future. Banks are reevaluating exposure to the crypto sector no matter how small, says this WSJ report. In early 2020 the regulatory agencies were not vigilant enough about this sector which is now seen as highly risky and not for the private sector- digital currencies being the province of central banks just like the US dollar which is issued with the backing of the US government. The Federal Reserve website says about CBDC, Central Bank Digital Currency in highlighted language.- "Like existing forms of money the CBDC would enable the general public to make digital payments. As a liability of the Federal Reserve, a CBDC would be the safest digital asset available to the general public, with no associated credit or liquidity risk." It is because the US Congress failed to act and a prevailing culture of laissez faire, failure of regulatory agencies to act quickly that allows this to happen, that the private sector was allowed to dabble in what is clearly the province of central banks. Laissez faire is originally a French word meaning "allow to do" which has been taken to extremes such as letting private sector issue digital currencies in the prevailing culture. The Fed's Lael Brainard, Jay Powell, Treasury's Janet Yellen did not come out saying what the Fed's website now says and highlights that the only safe digital asset is the central bank's digital currency. Compare this with the caution taken from the beginning about crypto sector by India's finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the head of the central bank of India the RBI Mr. Shantikanta Das. ...

The recent legislative achievements of president Biden can be compared to Franklin Roosevelt's first term that laid the ground for the recovery from the events of 1929. The events of 2009 and the events of pandemic in 2019 together amount to the magnitude of 1929. This includes the assistance to families in the pandemic, and the CHIPS and Science Act, the Inflation Reduction Act to get America back on its feet. These are the seeds of a major uplifting of the American people from the lost decades of the post Reagan era- the ravages of wars in the Middle East following star wars preparation, "free to choose" deregulation that creating financial crises,  tech and other monopolies with companies paying less in taxes than teachers and nurses leaving scant revenues to rebuild the aging infrastructure, and the shipping of supply chains overseas leaving factories and communities across America abandoned. FDR said at Madison Square Garden in 1936 - "In 1932 the issue was the restoration of American democracy and the people were in a mood to win. In 1936 the issue is the preservation of their victory. In 1932 I said give me your help not to win votes alone, but to win in this crusade to restore America to its own people. The president's experience in US Congress for about 40 years was invaluable in getting through Congress the Chips and Science Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the assistance to families during the pandemic. Only LBJ in recent post war American history had this kind of experience in getting Medicare and Social Security legislation through Congress. Combining this with the experience and negotiating skill for legislation of Pat Schumer Senate Majority Leader is something not seen since the 1960's. This team comes with a clear dedication and plan to restore democracy to the people by building infrastructure, rebuilding American manufacturing and protecting workers and families through cost of living action and higher wages. As Jake Sullivan NSA, a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice, and one who with the advice of the president has put domestic policy at the heart of foreign policy, puts it for workers and families in the US, these are goals he said at Brookings, "we must, we will achieve." Compare that with every other administration since FDR and Kennedy/LBJ for workers and families everything pales in comparison.  ...

This time the US Border Patrol has endorsed the Lankford Schumer effort and Arizona Senator Sinema, senators from Alabama and others, all women have made passionate pleas considering the need for a solution. Sinema made the plea for all Arizonans yesterday in Congress.

The WSJ looks at $110 billion in projects which get financial support from the US government under the climate law of the Inflation Reduction Act. Many of the projects are being done by foreign companies. Panasonic is planning a third battery plant in the US and will get $2 billion in tax credits from the US government. Other companies are from South Korea such as LG, and from China. The intent is to build a US supply chain that depends on factories in the US and creates jobs in the US, yet because the US supply chain is so undeveloped with so little attention paid to it in the past, foreign companies will be needed.

Plan B is to reimpose the tariffs using the Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act and Section 301 which puts the tariffs on firm legal footing. In fact the ruling by the ITC Court on the use of emergency powers under IEEPA law said there was already Section 122 on the basis of which serious trade imbalances could be addressed. Trade Adviser Navarro told Bloomberg that this was a possible strategy to reimpose the tariffs. The federal appeals court has allowed the tariffs to remain in place after the ITC ruling. The administration is appealing it to the US Supreme Court saying that the ITC ruling has unfairly jeopardized the president's negotiations with other countries.

Judge Carl Barbier's ruling on Jan. 14, 2015 against BP which increases its exposure to a maximum penalty of $13.7 billion under the Clean Air Act. Judge Barbier's decision was that BP was liable for 3.19 million barrels of crude that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon rig disaster. Judge Barbier's ruling said that BP acted recklessly in the events leading to the rig explosion an oil spill, giving the company exposure to the maximum penalty of $4300 per barrel. BP asked for a smaller penalty of $3000 per barrel.

Another factor was the grasp of the fact that for climate change action to work China could not be allowed to build one coal plant a week (95GW of coal electricity capacity in 2024). In 2024 US represented only 12% of global emissions and EU only 6%, China, Russia, India, Brazil etc emitting the rest of 82%.

Google antitrust decision in Mehta's Court for over 5 years since lawsuit by DJT in first term. During these 5 years much of the behaviours of monopolies and oligopolies in tech is further entrenched and new technology has created new ripples. Lost in all this commotion is the fact that there are real and present dangers in the situation presented by Google as a gatekeeper for knowledge and information which are a real and present danger to democratic forms of government as Google or social media tech companies can act as arbiters of information, a role that is not given to them under the US Constitution or any of the principles laid down by our founding fathers. Much of inflation's rise in the US has been transitory after all, says Greg Ip in the WSJ, yet credit Jay Powell at the Fed for his resolute fight against inflation. Gasoline that was over $5.00 a gallon in June when inflation was at 9.1% following Russia's Ukraine war is now $3.27 according to AAA, and this is an important reason why inflation is at 6.5% in December 2023. Demand for autos after pandemic and lockdowns coupled with supply chain problems caused auto prices and used car prices to rise sharply. This is now reversing with price declines. Ultra low interest rates caused a jump in home prices- this is reversing with Jay Powell and the Fed increasing interest rates sharply.

EV makers in US offer about $5000 in discounts to replace $7500 lost in government EV tax credits. The hurdle for electric vehicles is the lack of charging infrastructure and the cost of home chargers, in addition to the limited range in miles. The big jump in inflation centered not just on groceries in 2019-2024, there was a 34% increase in the cost of new cars and 50% increase for used cars, and a jump in maintenance costs. Reducing affordability for young people and making car ownership costlier. This turned into a cost of living crisis with groceries up 31%, that affected people's enthusiasm for climate change action when China was building one coal plant a week (adding 95 GW in 2024)- underlying the need to provide immediate relief to American working families and elderly through tax cuts, benefits and shifting tax dollars from climate change action to working families in the next 4 years. This is the approach taken under the DJT One Big Beautiful Act of 2025. Basically what the DJT side of the story is on emissions- US has only 12% of global greenhouse gas emissions, cut this by half to 6% and assuming the EU which has 6% of gas emissions also cuts by half to 3%, the saving just 9%  while the 82% of emitters China, India, Russia and Brazil etc not making the cuts needed the impact on climate change is not significant. If China and India want relief US working families also need relief.  ...

NTT Japan's largest telecommunications company plans to pay a 41% premium on shares of the part of Docomo that it does not own. NTT owns 66% of shares of Docomo. The $40 billion deal is designed to speed up decision making and compete in world markets. New prime minister Yoshihide Suga is pushing for lowering of high mobile phone service prices. Japanese government owns one third of NTT. This move will enable NTT Docomo to act on this important step of lowering prices as Japan reorganizes its business sector so that it can compete effectively with China and the U.S.

The world today is in a much better position to complete the transition to zero dependence on the volatile Middle East for oil. Today in 2026 the world's largest nations 1. US   2. China  3. India  4. Germany are all free of Middle East oil (India through waivers for Russian sources). European Union and UK is at about 12% which can be quickly substituted from the US+ Venezuela and other sources. US is self sufficient in oil and gas and exports oil to the UK, India, Germany and the European Union. Canada is self sufficient. Germany gets only 6% of its oil from the Middle East, the UK 12%, Spain 13% and Italy 14%. The Iran war is likely to shift more of the needs of UK, Spain and Italy to other more stable sources including oil from the US and Venezuela managed by the US, and other sources. This means that US policymakers can act in the best interests of all the nations of the world for preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and long range ballistic missiles. Germany is moving rapidly to renewable energy and this could bring its dependence on the Middle East to zero. India will meet its needs from Russia for the time being till it also shifts to oil from US+ Venezuela. India get 55% of its oil from the Middle East or about 2.7 million b/d. Russia was an important source of oil for India till the US trade agreement called for it to shift- a 30 day waiver and extension means India can get this oil from Russia without sanctions for the duration of the war. Reducing European demand and Indian demand frees up oil for Japan and South Korea on the world market the other 2 countries dependent on Middle East oil- Japan importing 95% of its oil consumption with imports of 2.5 million b/d and South Korea importing about 2 million b/d or 70% of its consumption. This means Japan and South Korea need a new strategy as they are overexposed to one source just as Germany was and learned a difficult lesson to diversify its sources. Japan has learned to reduce consumption for the same level of GDP and some of this can be through conservation, also tried in Germany in the last 4 years. During the 4 years. of Ukraine war Germany had to find ways to diversify sources Japan and South Korea will need rapidly to do the same in the Iran War. This means that only Japan and South Korea because of their lack of policy direction and vigilance have allowed this overdependence on the Gulf region,  (even as Germany diversified its sources, DJT and Israel were firm on nuclear weapons policy) they failed to see signs that they should diversify. The WSJ discloses that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition 160 page report in 2012 described Google's anti-compettitive practices and recommended a anit-trust lawsuit for three anti-competitive practices. The WSJ obtained documents based on the Freedom of Information Act. Mullins and Winkler provide a detailed account of the practices cited in the report as anti-competitive. The FTC Commissioners did not act on the report and instead voted unanimously in 2013 to end the investigation after Google agreed to some voluntary changes. The report stated a different conclusion: Google's "conduct has resulted-and will result- in real harm to consumers and to innovation in the online search and advertising markets." Mullins and Winkler point out that this report shows Google's statement that no wrongdoing was found is incorrect.

The Stop Online Piracy Act is being pushed by the Motion Picture industry to prevent U.S. websites offering pirated movie or television content. Estimates show 13% of Americans have watched pirated movie and television shows which costs the industry millions of dollars. The legislation to correct this under the SOPA is so broad that it would limit the ability of internet companies to operate freely. It gives the Justice Department powers to shut down sites to prevent pirated content from appearing even if the internet companies are not knowingly allowing pirated content through their sites. This is why Google, Wikipedia and other internet companies see this as a violation of freedom for the internet, and leading to possible censorship of the internet. Because the SOPA legislation would allow Domain Name System (DNS) blocking this also affects cybersecurity in a negative way. By redirecting traffic away from pirate websites using a DNS blocking system the move would allow hackers a way to create problems for internet security. For this reason the U.S. government has also raised concerns about this proposed legislation. Considering the problems and issues raised this may be an example of overreach by the Motion Picture industry that affects the vital free flow of information on the web. ...
