DJT said he and Mamdani are together on this issue of affordability in New York. DJT described himself as a New Yorker, New York as a great city with great potential , that he himself aspired to be Mayor of New York, and he wants Mamdani to do well spectacularly well for the people of New York. This is a good sign for New York and the Nation. That a Democratic Socialist and a Republican business person can find common ground in the interests of the people and the Nation they love. ...

It shows what happened in Brazil with Portuguese slave trade in addition to the US. In 1793 Upper Canada Lt. Governor Simcoe passed the National Act against Slavery. In 1824 Mexico abolished slavery. In 1834 the Slavery Abolition Act abolished slavery in the British Empire and freed 800,000 slaves in the Caribbean, Canada and South America. Lincoln and the North Northeast Midwest US fought slavery in the 1850's long before 1861 and Emancipation during the Civil War in the US. The US is the only country to have fought a war with millions of soldiers to cleanse itself of the ills and sin of slavery, Lincoln was steadfast so was much of the US. It was not till 1888 that Brazil abolished slavery, the slave trade was abolished in Brazil in 1850. In Brazil Portuguese slave trade brought 5 million to its shores. 500,000 were brought to the US according to this NYT report on the museum. British pressure helped end slavery in Brazil. ...

Department of Education invites controversy because of diversity programs and "transgender" as culture ignoring health risks. Established by president Jimmy Carter in 1979. Education in the US is run at the state level by each American state administration compared to UK where it is done at the national government level. It has one of the smallest budgets of any agency at 4%, Transportation is 1.7%, Agriculture 3.0%. Most of its work is overseeing $120 billion of federal grants and programs for public education through high school. It supports districts with low income students with $18 billion aid. Head Start program supporting 883,000 low income pre school children in 2022 gets federal aid from Department of Health and Human Services. National School Lunch Act of 1946 by Harry Truman is not affected as it is run by states,  federal aid comes from Department of Agriculture to 20+ million children. Republicans oppose spending about $1 billion to support Diversity program DEI initiatives and support for "cirtical race theory." There is opposition to "transgender." Britain's NHS had a commission look into transgender and says it poses health risks to children and young people. It also adds to anxiety of parents. Republicans are 53 -47 in majority in Senate- to scrap the agency Republicans need 60 votes in the Senate. The likely option is that they will pass a bill putting many of the functions in other agencies reducing its impact- between HHS, Treasury and Interior agencies. ...

Simon Johnson and Peter Boone say not taking forceful action with the large banks- taking them through bankruptcy and restructuring procedures as advocated by senior Federal Reserve officials like Peter Hoenig- will only lead to irreversible damage. The current Geithner-Summers policy being followed by the Obama administration is simply to hope that by fiscal stimulus and economic recovery the banks may be brought to sustained profits and be able to muddle through their financial problems. This Johnson argues is not likely to happen and the cost will be higher debt levels for America, irreversible damage as America faces low debt and financially stronger countries in Asia and sees its position in the world weaken. The muddle through policies for banks of the Obama administration have little prospects in the face of an IMF estimated $275 billion shortfall in capital on balance sheets at large banks (from the IMF Global Financial stability Report). Without aggressive action on the banks America's recovery and renewal will only delayed....

New data from Pew Research Center in Dec. 2013 shows 89% of Hispanics support a legal path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. But when asked to choose between relief from deportation and path to citizenship, a majority 55% of respondents chose relief from deportation, compared to 35% preferring a path to citizenship. Wilders party in Netherlands once with one fourth of vote now only fourth largest in parliament after 7 members defect Feb 2026 because of the autocratic nature of Wilders control of his Party for Freedom (PVV). It has roiled Dutch politics when Wilders withdrew his support and Rutte government lasted 2 years. A new coalition with Wilders joining the government of Rutte's successor also has collapsed quickly. In the 2025 elections the New Social Contract Party which campaigned for good governance as part of that coalition was wiped out and Wilders did not do as well as he expected losing 11 seats to end up with 26 seats in parliament of 150 seats and 16% of the vote surpassed by a new centre left party D66 with 26 seats and 17% of the vote. What Wilders has accomplished is the sense that all parties now accept that there is a Dutch way of life and immigrants do not just fit into it, that integration is only a concept that does not work in real life.

New studies show that the most important thing to do is to pick the right company for mobility and advancement, getting further education and skills, and for job stability. The studies shown here were done by the Burning Glass Institute in Philadelphia and the Harvard Project on Managing the Future of Work, the Schultz Family Foundation. The study looked at workers in 200 companies over a 5 year period to understand what helps workers build good careers. Companies that rank high for employee retention and pay are Adobe, Alphabet, Boeing, Microsoft. Companies promoting workers without a college degree are Southwest Airlines, AT&T, American Express, CISCO. For launchpads to further mobility Apple and AT&T do well. The main thing is that a person gets into the right company which has big consequences yet the workers starting out they don't have the visibility to make an educated choice, says an expert who did the study.  ...

People from Denmark are known for fluency in English, and are some of the best non-native speakers of the English language. About 38 percent of courses at Danish universities are in English. Yet debate is shifting to the inflluence of immigrants in society as "pizza-Dansk" or "pizza-Danish" is spoken by Middle East immigrants at pizzerias. One Danish member of parliament from the DF Party is suggesting the government prevent the spread of "pizza-Dansk" and help preserve the Danish language spoken by 6 million people in the country. It is reflection of the anti-immigrant mood in Sweden, Denmark and other European countries, where parliamentary elections have given parties opposed to immigration a larger number of seats.

Vic Starmer spent the day after Thursday's election night at a race course in Surrey. Her mother introduced her to flat racing and she spent time at the Doncaster race course while growing up.
