Ken Murray, a retired family medicine professor at the University of Southern California, describes how doctors address the option of prolonging life when the prospects of survival improve say from 5% to 15%. The choice is based on the human need to find closure in an atmosphere that gives comfort, a sense of peace and a sense of place with home and family, with hospitals not deisnged to and not able to perform that role. Murray gives the example of his cousin Torch, who he says was born at home by the light of a flashlight, who decides to not choose aggressive treatment, which would have prolonged his life for no more than 4 months. Instead he spent the next 8 months with family and did everything he could do with the 8 months that made for quality of life, rather than just choosing quantity in and out of hospitals. He died peacefully in his sleep. The heroics in and out of hospitals would actually have deprived the patient of the opportunity to reach a sense of closure that comes from the comfort of home, family, and arriving at a sense of peace....

The UK Office for National Statistics shows Britain's GDP declined by 0.2% in the last quarter of 2011, compared to the prior quarter. The figures showed a drop in business investment. Polls by ComRes, show 51% of people in Britain see the government austerity cuts as having an adverse effect on the economy, with cuts being larger and coming too quickly.

The head of the Boeing 777 airplane program, Larry Loftis, is made the new head of the 787 Dreamliner program. The change is designed to improve the production timing of the Dreamliner program, which has suffered repeated delays and is three years behind the original plan. Boeing has a backlog of 850 customer orders on the Dreamliner.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mark Carney, the head of Canada's central bank and the head of the Financial Stability Board, says China is falling behind in its earlier committments made at G-20 meetings to move towards rebalancing the world economy. He pointed to the fact that consumption in China has moved from about half of China's GDP to about a third, in the last ten years. China's investment has also declined from half of GDP to about one third. Carney also raised concerns about the strength of the Canadian dollar for Canada's competitiveness. The report "China: 2030" by the World Bank and China's Development Reform Commission also calls for changes in the way China's economy has increased its dependence on state run companies.

Facebook users who share photos on the internet now have less need to print photos using H-P's costly ink cartridges. Revenues at the printing division declined by 7% in the fiscal year ending in Jan 2012 compared to the prior year. Operating profit margins in the printing division have declined to 12.2%. There are questions also about how the floods in Thailand and hard drive shortages could have affected PC sales this significantly.
