Indian GDP growth is now expected at 8-8.5%, the highest of large economies. This means slower growth is expected ahead in 2023, says Justin Lahart in the WSJ.  The shift to consuming more services such as dentist visits and tourism from buying washing machines and appliances will mean slower sales for these large companies that are manufacturers and retailers. Fed chairman Jay Powell's higher interest rates will also limit growth in sales in 2023. Overall the US economy may barely skirt a recession, and this depends on which forecaster one talks to.

Senator Manchin wants other countries or regions such as the European Union to go first with the global minimum tax of 15%. Holdouts Poland and Hungary have not agreed to the 15% tax in the EU. After that the US could follow. Mr. Manchin is a Democrat whose vote is needed for Congress to pass the legislation. Currently the tax is set at 10.5% after legislation passed by president Trump.

Much of the funding for HEIRS - for Health, Education, Infrastructure, Retirees and Society- has to come from better collection of taxes, so that everyone pays their fair portion of taxes which tech companies are not doing in the last decade.

The European Union has adapted well to a cutoff of supplies of Russian gas. Alternative sources were quickly pulled together in a matter of months after the invasion and cutoff to tackle the winter of 2022-2023. Conservation was moved into high gear, renewable energy investment expanded, and alternative sources for gas established. Germany sought supplies of LNG from the US and Qatar and built gas terminal at Wilhelmshaven in record time of less than 6 months. Norway increased gas supplies to Europe and now provides one third of Europe's gas needs. German industry changed the way they used gas supplies to reduce usage and make it efficient.

Yet India as one of the few space exploring nations has only 3% of the market. Invest India, India's investment promotion agency says this will increase to 10% by 2030. In March India's NewIndia state owned space agency sent three dozen space satellites for OneWeb into space after launches by Russia were stopped. In 2023 the US is the largest by far in the space sector economy. China and Russia are also in this space.

One story in the WSJ showed how 21 million tourists visiting Croatia in the summer were not following the basic social distancing and mask guidelines. These tourists returning to Germany, Austria and other countries were spreading the virus after becoming infected in bars and restaurants, shops in Croatia which had not followed the basic guidelines that had been followed earlier in Croatia in April. Over the summer after months of lockdown people simply used fatigue with restrictions as a reason for going the other way and ignoring them.

Prof. John Ashton, regional director of public health for the northwest of England offers this advice on pitfalls to avoid in the testing and contact tracing systems of the UK and other countries. He says there is a problem in sending testing kits through the mail or postal service. He points out that the swabs needed for testing correctly are quite invasive, the risk of an inadequate sample taken in high, resulting in a false negative report. 

On contact tracing he says the current recruiting system has pitfalls of contact tracing people not having local knowledge. Needed are people who know the local population and are able to fully engage with these people.

China has banned coal imports from Australia in response to Australian request for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus and criticism of China's handling of Hong Kong protests. 

China imports about a quarter of its coal imports from Australia. Yet this has impacted China because of a rebound in the economy and a very cold winter in 2020. This means there is a shortage of electricity in some parts of China. 

China imports 80% of its iron ore, with 60% coming from Australia and prices of iron ore have almost doubled in the past year. Last year China imported over 1 billion tons of iron ore.

This report looks at the situation in California as it reports 53,000 new cases on December 16, 2020. In Apple Valley, California in the southern part of the state the only capacity is overcapacity with hospitals at 200 or 250% of capacity.  The scary thing is that the health care system is reduced to being available only to the gravest, most urgent medical conditions.

Both Ukraine and Russian Federation have signed the agreement. It forbids the "release of dangerous forces from nuclear plants that can cause severe losses for the civilian population." Russia took control of the nuclear plant at Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine early in the war leading to a situation where the European Union fears it is attempting to weaponize the plant by turning it off the Ukrainian grid. This creates risk that backup cooling systems cannot cool the reactors leading to accidents.
