Total student debt in the U.S. passed the figure of $1 trillion in late 2012, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the federal agency recently created. This figure is about 16% larger than an estimate made earlier in 2012 by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The surge reflects increasing numbers of people going back to college to get new skills in a faltering job market. Tution increases with cuts in state funds to colleges mean larger loans need to be taken. Another factor is that about 25% of borrowers are behind in payments, resulting in higher interest payments, according to New York Fed data. Experts say this could delay the recovery in the housing market, as potential home buyers take longer to build up funds for a down payment. Parents are co-signers on some loans for children and professional changing careers are also taking loans, creating larger effects of rising student debt.

Bloomberg Philanthropies has committed $600 million to fight tobacco use worldwide between 2007-2016. Tactics used in New York City reduced the city's smoking rate from 22% in 2002 to 14% in 2011. These tactics will now be used in countries around the world from China to other developing countries. Already an effort has been funded in Turkey including putting a new smoke-free law in place in 2008. According to Tobacco Atlas cigarettes contributed to 6 million deaths in 2011, 80% in the developing world, with high use in China, Indonesia and India.

Deutsche Bank has legal risks of over $3 billion euros according to analysts. 1 billion euros have been set aside as required by Germany's financial regulator BaFin to cover potential legal settlement losses. This is separate from 822 million euros in other provisions. At the same time Deutsche Bank has to raise 10-15 billion euros to meet regulatory reserve capital requirements.
