Auto sales in the U.S. reached 1.33 million vehicles in May, a 25% increase over the previous year, with the previous years figures skewed by the tsunami in Japan and shortages for Japanese manufacturers. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate was 13.8 million vehicles. Employment increased to 644,000 workers in the U.S. auto industry, an increase in the first quarter of 2012 of 6% over the prior year, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. The basic reason for the increased demand is the aging of cars on the road to about 10.8 years, according to vehicle registration information.

The misperceptions created in the media appear in some parts to cast the US as a colonial power which it never was in the way of the Spanish, the British, the Dutch, the Portuguese, the French, the Danish. In fact exactly the opposite. One cannot think of an American who felt deeply for the situation the Chinese people were left in with the Japanese invasion than Gen. Joe Stilwell, as shown by Barbara Tuchman in her book Stilwell and the American Experience in China. Stilwell amazingly risked his life in railroad cars behind Imperial Japanese Army enemy lines in north eastern China in the 1930's because of his deep ly feelings for China at that time. This WSJ report shows auto insurance companies now have premiums that more than offset what they are paying out for repairs and other expenses. In Florida excess premiums led to $950 million being returned to customers, other states have similar laws. Competition between insurers should lead to lower rates says the WSJ.

Now there is reconstruction help needed in Lebanon, and in Syria and Gaza with years of bombing and conflict. Egypt is the largest country with 120 million people and it faces a strain on its budget and strain on its finances. Egypt will have to reschedule large debt borrowings and payments. Syria and Lebanon will get less help for reconstruction. The wars of the Middle East hurt the US and Russia and were an unneeded distraction for Europe. Now they are coming back to hurt the very countries and people who in pursuit of different ideologies and religious beliefs engaged in incessant wars and conflicts.

The southern city of Chennai (or Madras) is fast becoming a hub for car manufacturing in India. It will turn out 1.5 millon vehicles very soon. Hyundai, Daimler, Ford, Nissan and BMW all have manufacturing here. About 200,000 people are employed in the car industry in the state of Tamilnadu, of which Chennai is the capital. Hyundai entered the Indian market early and turns out 650,000 cars in Chennai. Tamilnadu state has reduced the red tape and simplified the government approval process, making it easier to setup business in the state.

Reithofer tells Ewing about the time in 1997- 2000 when he was in charge of the BMW Spartanburg plant in the U.S. Reithofer made a list of problems and presented this to managers. Managers at the plant told Reithofer that in the U.S. the company did not have problems, it had challenges and every challenge was an opportunity. This made a deep impression on him and he sees the current problems in the European auto market in that light. BMW has an agreement with unions to cut production quickly as it did in 2008, if there is a sharp decline in the market. It will continue to invest in R&D, bring out a light weight battery powered car in 2013, and build a new factory in Brazil.

Attorney General Sessions says the driver of the car who drove into protesters could be prosecuted in a number of ways including for a hate crime. The protest was against a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. A car driven by 20 year old James Alex Fields drove into protesters injuring 19 and killing one woman. The local charges being made are for hit and run, malicious wounding, and the Justice Department is conducting its own probe. The comments by Sessions contrasted with the statement blaming both sides by president Trump, which led to strong criticism in the media and by the business community.

The Italian government is providing financial aid to families for babysitting and more parental leave but this does not cover the costs.
