Changes at USAID headed by Rajiv Shah as it makes more room for private initiative of local groups and funding of local groups in countries being helped, and shifting away from handing whole projects to U.S. government contractors. Another change is the harnessing of the efforts of U.S. corporations interested in emerging market countries for introducing their products as part of an aid effort. An example is GE for medical equipment at Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital opening in South Africa in 2016. In countries where corruption is widespread such as Afghanistan, giving money to government ministry creates risks of waste and corruption, a problem which is however part of larger problem of wasted resources in that country. The basic concept of using private initiative and getting the involvement of local groups, U.S. corporations interested in emerging markets at the aid level for their products, taken up by Shah is sound and was overdue. It is already the practice as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is doing much of the heavy lifting and large scale aid effort in poor countries of Africa and Asia. Shah worked at that the Gates Foundation before USAID. An example is the Grand Challenges for Development program to get innovators to help tackle problems in poor countries- the Pratt Pouch a small pouch with anti-AIDS drugs not requiring refrigeration was developed at Duke University and could potentially prevent transmission of HIV to 400,000 babies a year. Shah's own background of immigrant parents coming from India gives him a unique insight into how to combine the involvement of the creative abilities of well intentioned Americans at universities and private companies and local groups in poor countries, to leverage the results. Brazil's growth in 2011 is expected to come in at 3%, much lower than expected. This is a sharp decline from 7% growth in 2010. A modest stimulus of $1.5 billion through tax cuts was announced by the Brazilian government. Brazil's central bank made three successive cuts in interest rates to counteract the slowdown in the economy.

Ford's new 2013 Fusion model was radically redesigned to compete with the redesigned midsize Camry, and expected redesigns of the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, the VW Passat and the Chevy Malibu. Ford hopes to gain market share with the Fusion after making only a small gain in market share of one tenth of a point in 2011, compared to half a percentage point for GM and 1.3 percentage points for Chrysler. VW Passat sales doubled in the last quarter of 2011 compared to all of 2010, showing increased competition in this segment. The new Fusion was designed at Ford's design center in Cologne, Germany, where the Focus was designed. Ford is shifting responsibility for car design to Europe and keeping pickup truck and SUV design in the U.S.

Suspicions of Chinese government connections have dogged Huawei, China's big telecom maker, as it was founded by an army officer. Huawei has shown interest in Motorola's network equipment unit, but bidding for this will wait till 2011. The U.S. represents only $319 million in sales out of a total global sales of $21.5 billion for Huawei. To change the image and to get deals done Huawei has hired Sullivan and Cromwell, Skadden Arps, and Arnold & Porter law firms.

Greece's 2015 budget eases some previous cuts in spending. The economy is expected to grow at 2.9% in 2015. Included is a 30% reduction in a tax on heating oil and on a solidarity levy on income. The projected budget deficit is 0.2% for 2015, essentially a balanced budget.

A study published in the January issue of the British Medical Journal shows almost identical results for death rates for two randomly assigned groups, one with women given a breast exam by trained nurses only and the other with women given a breast exam by trained nurses and a mammogram. 90,000 Canadian women were covered over 25 years in this detailed study.
