Egypt's presidential candidate Mohammed Morsi, leads in the first round of presidential elections over Amr Moussa. He has no ties with the Mubarak regime and comes from the Muslim Brotherhood. In 2011 he was elected head of the Freedom and Justice Party and made its candidate for president. Because of the severe economic problems facing Egypt- a demographic explosion of young people with few job opportunities, enough foreign reserves to finance a limited period of food and essential imports and dependent on the IMF for financing, neglected infrastructure development during decades of misrule under Mubarak- a candidate with an advanced engineering background trained in the U.S. could bring the right set of skills to the job of rebuilding Egypt. ...

About 100 Special Economic Zones operate in India. The government has approved 478 new SEZ's. Investment in these zones is expected to double to $66 billion by 2012, according to India's Commerce Ministry. Iran takes conciliatory position to set up more exchanges with the USA, cultural contacts, direct flights, and set up diplomatic offices. It will also return to negotiations on how best Iran should move on its nuclear program and how to accomodate U.N. demands for it to move towards civilian uses of nuclear energy. It is possible that Iran wants to get out of the way from being an irritant in negotiations and from being perceived as a danger by western nations as this would only work in favor of the Republican candidate for President who is taking a strong line on Iran and wait for a possible more open Democratic administration to work out differences.

The crackdown on the opposition after a failed coup in 2016 has intensified, and Turkey is now seen as a one party state under president Erdogan and the AKP Party that has ruled Turkey for the last decade. The crackdown was made by the AKP Party because of the coup, yet DW points out that the crackdown itself was of an anti-democracy type by acting against the opposition parties in parliament. As a result of emergency powers assumed by president Erdogan, the appointment of judges by the ruling party, and the shutdown of media opposed to the president, the mass firing of teachers and officials not seen as allied to the ruling party,  DW.com say democracy has suffered in Turkey in 2016-2017. DW.com says the previous republic setup by Kemal Ataturk, modern Turkey's founder,  was an imperfect democracy, the new one with the new constitution setup by Erdogan and the AKP is not free and not democratic.

It is not clear how China's president Jinping's support for the idea of "China Dream," -of China as a world power on a level with the U.S.- should be interpreted. China will increase its defense budget and continue its efforts to be the dominant power in its region, even as the U.S. and Japan begin to build closer ties in the Pacific. Is it simply a new assertiveness for its rights in relation to territorial disputes with Japan, and a continuation of a policy of peaceful development of earlier leaders. The move could also be an effort to build close ties with the military as the new leadership of Jinping-Keqiang prepares to make major changes in the economy. A speech in Dec. 2012 to Communist party officials in Guangdong province by Jinping, on how the lack of unity with the military led to the collapse of the Soviet Union under Gorbachev, could throw light on the thinking. In a few days an old party was gone, as he put it. This also follows the Bo Xilai episode which involved contacts with the military and the risks of division in the military and political leadership....

Efforts being made to convince the Spanish government of Mariano Rajoy to accept IMF aid to recapitalize its banks. The IMF released information showing Spanish banks would need to raise at least 37 billion euros or $46 billion to prevent a worsening of the banking crisis. The report was released before the meeting of EU finance ministers on June 9-10 to persuade the Spanish government to accept IMF aid. The eurozone bailout fund was given powers in 2011 to make loans to governments for the purpose of recapitalizing banks, with conditions and terms set for the financial sector not for the government's spending plans. According to people aware of the discussions taking place in the European Commission and the IMF, one option is to have the European Banking Authority and not the IMF oversee the program. This avoids the usual stigma of accepting aid coming from the IMF with strict conditions attached including restrictions on the government's fiscal plans.

Apple's offshore money of $102 billion is managed from the U.S. and much of it in banks in Manhattan, only technically for tax purposes recorded in foreign subsidiaries in Ireland and other locations. A Jakarta corruption court gives a 10 year prison sentence to a high ranking police official, Djoko Susilo. Susilo headed the traffic police and then the police academy. He was convicted for taking $3 million in kickbacks for procurement of driving simulators used in driver license testing. President Yudhoyono had to intervene to let prosecutors question Mr. Susilo. The Indonesian president made anti-corruption promises during his election campaign in 2004.

Analysts are predicting billions of euros of writedowns for European banks in 2009 and 2010 and these will be tough years for these banks. 98 billion euros of impaorments are expected in 2009 , up from 77 billion euros in 2008, according to analysts in a Credit Suisse report.
