Fox News and WSJ are taking differing positions on Epstein case with Fox News ignoring it and the WSJ carrying the story. Murdoch and DJT have a complicated relationship in July 2025 following the $10 billion DJT lawsuit against Murdoch filed in late July after a story in the WSJ. WSJ parent company Dow Jones says it stands by the story and will defend the accuracy of its reporting. Both the DJT Republicans and the Fox News network appeal to conservative viewers of television, and people in business. WSJ has carried stories questioning the tariff policies of the president, and is critical. It is also not fully supportive of policies to handle migrants. Fox News another Murdoch news outlet is through programs like "Hannity" supporting the president and DJT supports it. This creates a dichotomy in the support when DJT and Republicans are putting forward an agenda that is moving fast on the economy, migration, crime, and world trade requiring support to keep the conservative groups together in the US. This is not a situation encountered before as the nation is moving to a crossroads in which direction it should take. And this does not even take up the issues of climate protection which will come up, and of pharmaceutical companies overcharging Americans for healthcare, other battles that will take place.   ...

Ollanta Humala, is the leading candidate for the presidential election in Peru, with 27% of the vote after 43% of the votes were counted. Kuczynski has 23.6%, of the vote and Keiko Fujimori has 21.8%. Humala, lost a runoff against the current President Alan Garcia in 2006. He is modeling his campaign on the effort by Lula Ignacio Da Silva's when he ran for President of Brazil. Both have credentials viewed as left of centre and want to be viewed as offering a more balanced version of development. In Humala's case the rural areas outside of the capital city of Lima have not seen the benefits of rapid development and modernization.

Daniel Yergin of consultancy firm IHS describes the geopolitical disputes in the Middle East between Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Iran that are leading to likely continued oversupply of oil in 2016, keeping prices in the $30-$40 range. Saudi Arabia is not likely to change its policy of going after market share, Venezuela is affected but lacks a voice in OPEC decisions, Russia continues its policies in Syria and Iraq under the Putin government affecting other Sunni states, and Iran following the lifting of sanctions is likely to ramp up supply to make up for its lost market share- all leading to an extended period of low prices. This situation benefits China, the European Union countries, India, Turkey and the U.S. in a period of slow economic growth in 2015-2016. The Saudis seeing their interests in the region threatened by Iran and Russia, and dissatisfied with the foreign policy of president Obama, see a policy of pushing for market share as appropriate in the current geopolitics of the region....

French 2025 Bayrou budget compromise deficit of 5.4% target is a fragile one. Le Monde says PM Bayrou is dependent on the goodwill of his opponents the RN National Rally and the Partie Socialiste PS. Cutting the budget slightly is not popular with RN or PS and it remains a compromise to avoid the worst of not passing the budget for 2025, a responsibility the public places on all politicians and parties. Alex Frangos says mainland shares are still trading at a premium. He cites the Hang Seng A-H Share Premium Index, that shows the difference for shares in the freely trading Hong Kong market with the less freely trading mainland China market- the mainland shares trade in Jan 2016 at a premium of 38%, when the five year average premium is 8%. He cites other figures to show that Beijing policymakers face a difficult task to keep stock prices from reaching a natural valuation.

They all say their faith, grit, family and spouse, and setting priorities, are helping them both make it in their careers and be engaged parents at the same time. Pew Research shows of women in both parties Republican and Democratic, about 70% want careers outside the home, and about 88% want good parenting at the same time.   ...

To make it possible to for the sale of Paramount with its CBS subsidiary to Ellison's Skydance for $8 billion, the company has stepped back from its confrontation with president DJT in a lawsuit. The 60's commentator Walter Cronkite was from CBS News, and Edward Murrow broadcast on  World War II on CBS News.  Somehow this has gone awry with recent coverage in 2024. DJT objected to CBS head Wendy McMahon's handling of news coverage on programs such as -60 Minutes, Face the Nation on Sundays, that he said was tailored to present Democrats candidate Kamala Harris in a certain way, that affected DJT's chances with voters. 

For the sale to Skydance to go ahead to Paramount which owns CBS, needed te cooperation of the Federal Communications Commission under Brendan Carr. Paramount settled the DJT lawsuit for $16 million with Wendy McMahon departing CBS News, the money going directly to DJT Presidential Library.

US-Swiss trade deal November 2025 for 15% US tariff in exchange for $200 billion in investment in US. This includes access to Swiss markets for the US. The agreement also will let in dairy products and chocolate to the US at 15% tariff to reduce cost of living concerns. Swiss dairy producers and chocolate makers are likely to bear most of the 15% tariff burden because of higher margins. The $2000 rebate to all Americans from tariffs is a good idea of the DJT administration to give Americans protection from the smaller share of the tariffs that are passed on to consumers that are not borne by the producers exporting to the US. Overall in that situation the US will benefit in the restructuring of world trade that the DJT administration will have accomplished without hurting American consumers and bringing large scale investment into the US for jobs and higher wages. This is the part of the DJT Deal that could help America rebuild its manufacturing and economy in new ways.  ...

The foreign lobbying by Pakistan and then India in Washington DC for access to the White House using lobbyist firms in the US. This enabled leaders from Pakistan to visit the White House in the US soon after conflict between Pakistan and India erupted over terrorist incident. Terrorist incidents happened in New Delhi and Islamabad in November 2025. The DJT administration may have gained support from Pakistan/Turkey for the Hamas settlement through this lobbying effort. The DJT administration inadvertently put itself in a position of being influenced by lobbying in this case for access to the White House. Following that event China's president Xi Jinping tightened restrictions on rare earths in trade negotiations with the US for a temporary agreement that gives access to the US market. US inflation in May was up 1% over April 2022, and 8.6% above a year earlier. Of the 1% increase in May over April about half was from increase in prices of appliances and furniture and consumer items bought from stores such as Walmart and Target. The trend is shifting quickly as buyers are shifting purchases out of this category and spending more on travel and eating out, entertainment. Retailers such as Target are stuck with excess inventory and plan to discount items. This will result in an easing of inflation.

Shortage of semiconductors for cars are persisting but should ease at some time. Service cost continue to increase. Overall there should be an easing of inflation but not enough for the Fed to change its policy of interest rate increases.

Parmeswaran Iyer takes over India's development planning body Niti Aayog from Amitabh Kant on June 30. Iyer joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1981. He led the Swachh Bharat or Clean India Mission in 2016, and headed the national drinking water and sanitation department. In 2009 he left IAS to join the World Bank as Global Lead for Water Global Practice initiatives. He has also served as Professor of Management Practice at the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad. 

The Modi administration has selected a person in the right field of water resources with IAS background from Uttar Pradesh, and proven management ability to deliver results, for the critical task of leading India's development to 2030.

Adriana Kugler a Labor economist at Georgetown is president Biden's nominee for the Federal Reserve Board. In 2021 she was nominated as Executive Director at the World Bank. Her work is on how labor and social policies can improve the lives of working people, help create jobs, and help the less well off get education and training. Asked about Biden nominating labor economists to top jobs she says-"This is the key issue of our time. This is what we need to fix." As the first Latina in this position at the World Bank, Kugler who is a Colombian-American says, "they view me differently," and have a sense of being heard by someone who understands what it is like ot grow up in a developing country.

US housing prices are seeing a decline in 2022 as a result of the Fed's interest rate increases even though there is no extra supply of housing. Renters are staying away from high mortgage payments at the higher rates, and families with a 3% mortgage are staying put rather than risk making larger mortgage payments for a new home. Fed's Jerome Powell has this to say- "You had housing markets go up at very unsustainable levels and overheating. Now the housing market is going through the other side of that and hopefully coming out at abetter place." This is more like the drop in demand for housing in 1979 which revived in 1983 after the Fed eased up on increasing rates, says the WSJ.

India UK trade has been neglected over the years. In 2021 India accounts for less than 2% of total UK trade. During the period before the pandemic 2010 to 2019 UK exports declined by 3%. During that time the US increased exports to India by 79%, Canada by 62%, and France by 58%, says this report in The Guardian. This happened even though India is the leading country in the British Commonwealth and one would expect much stronger trade ties. This is one reason UK prime minister Boris Johnson is putting a high priority on building up trade with India during his visit to India. UK Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan seeks to double the current 22 billion pounds trade between India and the UK by 2030.

Companies in retail, construction  entertainment sectors made layoffs in the first 2 years of the pandemic. White collar workers worked remotely and were not affected that much. In 2023 the layoffs are now affecting professionals and white collar workers. White collar workers are also paid more which creates savings for companies when they layoff higher paid professionals who do not perform critical tasks. In manufacturing and blue collar worker industries there are not many layoffs because companies are hoarding these workers as there are worker shortages. Many workers retired in manufacturing and blue collar leading to shortages in these sectors. Because this is not typical in the layoffs and hiring cycles seen previous to the pandemic this is an unusual situation.

Much of inflation's rise in the US has been transitory after all, says Greg Ip in the WSJ, yet credit Jay Powell at the Fed for his resolute fight against inflation. Gasoline that was over $5.00 a gallon in June when inflation was at 9.1% following Russia's Ukraine war is now $3.27 according to AAA, and this is an important reason why inflation is at 6.5% in December 2023. Demand for autos after pandemic and lockdowns coupled with supply chain problems caused auto prices and used car prices to rise sharply. This is now reversing with price declines. Ultra low interest rates caused a jump in home prices- this is reversing with Jay Powell and the Fed increasing interest rates sharply.

A second estimate by the OECD increases the revenues generated from the global minimum tax of 15% on corporations by as much as $150 billion. The original estimate was of $150 billion, so the real amount generate could be twice that. It means it will help countries build the infrastructure they need to revive their economies.The international tax agreement of 2021 sets the rate based on where companies sell to consumers rather than where they are based. It is the most important tax agreement in a century with 137 countries participating. 

The original estimate estimated revenues to be $150 billion- it raised this to $200 billion. It sees $200 billion in existing revenues that will be reallocated up from $125 billion. Taxing rights will generate additional $36 billion.
