David Brooks says one of the good things about the ugly election campaign of 2016 and its depletion of moral capital, is the way people are responding to it by finding their voice for something better and uplifting. He cites Michelle Obama as one example of someone who acts not as a politician but as a mother in her behaviour and talk. He praises Hillary Clinton for adopting this Michelle tone and giving 3 answers he calls great in the final debate with Trump. The answers came on the questions about Trump and denigration of women,  on the contrast between the experience gained on a television show "Apprentice," and the experience of Clinton as senator and secretary of state. Brooks says they were given in a gradual understated manner, showing moral sentiment and a quiet contempt, similar to how a mother or parent would respond and not a politician. Another way to look at it is that the contrast was so great between her and her opponent's experience and respect for parenthood, and the campaign so long with so many people who had shown indifference when they should have known and done better, that Hillary Clinton simply stood her own ground based on her own Protestant Methodist faith and conviction.  ...

The cognitive labour is thinking about all the practical elements of household responsibilities. Emotional labour is maintaining the family's emotions, calming things down if the kids are acting up. The intersection of the two is preparing, organizing, and anticipating everything to make life flow.

Four million elderly women live alone in Japan. For some like For Chikako Tanaka in Aichi prefecture in central Japan who is 85 years old, social isolation is a real problem. She had no pension and lived on her savings till the savings ran out, with no one to visit her as her dementia progressed. Chikako was an unlikely person to go to prison for shoplifting because she dresses with care and looks different, yet this was the only way out of social isolation. In prison for the first time in years her 85th birthday was celebrated. 

Physiotherapists help women prisoners over 70 years with rehabilitation, walking skills and balancing exercizes. Prison services help women to integrate back into society when they return, with service centers in each neighborhood when they return.

Social and economic changes in American society have come down to an alarming statistic. There are three young women for every two young men in American colleges. At Tulane the freshman class has two thirds women students. At liberal arts colleges the class is usually 60% women. As noted in this report by Susan Dominus in NYT there is a devaluing of college education because men have choices that are higher paying, conservatives have not emphasized college education, and "male drift" is a serious problem leading to male enrolment declining. And once in college men are dropping out at afaster rate. All this adds up to a serious problem in America, one that the Biden administration has to take seriously as it looks at rebuilding not just the economy, but also the education system that supports the US economy in the world.

According to researchers at AARP and the Economic Policy Institute women over 50 years have a harder time than men of the same age in finding good jobs since the 2008 financial crisis. Older women who were laid off have a very hard time finding employment and steady jobs, as this report by Patricia Cohen in the NYT shows. Age, lack of internet skills, shifting networks, caregiving responsibilities and time off taken to care for children, all have worked against older women over 50 years. A study by the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis shows that compared to 2006-2007 before the financial crisis hit when about a quarter of the unemployed for women over 50 years were unemployed over 6 months, by 2012-2013 the jobless women for more than 6 months had gone up to about half of the unemployed women in this age group.

The female labor participation rate for India is as low as 15%. Delayed entry into the labor force by further education, improving incomes leading to women not working, and a bias against hiring women, cultural and security factors, are some reasons for the low participation rate for women.

For women the labor participation rate dropped from 15.5% in 2016 to 11.9% in 2017 and 11% in 2018. 

This report shows average labor participation rate in India is low of 47% in 2016 (mainly because of dismal participation rate for women) compared to world average of 66%.

WIth only about 30% of the possession the Colombian team dominated the game. The winning goal came in the 89th minute of the game from a stunning header by Manela Vanegas. Colombia led for most of the game. Linda Calcedo scored first for Colombia. The last time Germany lost a game in global games was in 1995 against Sweden.

The U.S. vice presidential debate between Mike Spence and Tim Kaine showed Kaine focussing attention on Trump's crude attacks on women, praise for Russian president Putin, and opposition to the minimum wage. Spence's tone was measured and his focus was on deflecting the attacks on the crude language used by Trump in the campaign by saying Trump was "not a polished professional politician," like the others, and not responding to the Kaine references to Trump. Spence stuck to issues about immigration open borders, abortion, president Obama's inaction in Syria, the plight of workers in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He did not respond to repeated questions on Trump's failure to disclose his tax returns and his business failures leading to close to a billion dollars in losses and not having paid taxes for 18 years, as disclosed by the New York Times. Spence had to choose between hurting his own chances for reelection with the traditional Republican voters alienated by Trump and standing up for Trump's crude language against women and minorities. He deftly tried to the best using his skills as a radio broadcaster. Kaine who is usually more measured and thoughtful, had to choose between his traditional style of speaking and the role he was expected to play bringing to the public's attention the crude language and style of the Trump campaign and the instability reflected in it. He used his skills as a litigator to ask repeated questions on Trump, especially on the taxes, which leads to questions about funding infrastructure development and jobs without the wealthy paying their share of taxes. ...

Tontine pension products are popular in Japan where longevity has risen to the point where many women are live much longer. To make their pensions last longer for older participants the women pool their investment assets so that the oldest participants do not outlive their savings. As participants die the remainder of the asset pool is divided among the remaining women so that older participants can continue to receive periodic payouts for longer. Annuity products of this type are offered by Japanese insurance companies where contributions are made by Japanese people in their 50's for pension payouts later in life.

This interview in DW.com by Stefan Dege with author Sebastian Sons ("Built on Sand: A Problematic Ally"), looks at the changes in Saudi Arabia as a new generation of younger leaders under Prince Salman take over the desert region. A big change is that benefitting women in Saudi Arabia. The driving ban lifted is only one change. The bigger change is in the way educated Saudi women will now be integrated into the labor market.  This means improvements in gender relations can also now take place.  One reason cited here that these top down changes from Prince Salman are more likely to happen affecting Saudi society at the grassroots is that 70% of the Saudi population is under 30 years of age. Many have studied overseas and are educated, seeking a freer and more open life. The younger generation is euphoric says Sons, and they put all their hopes on Prince Salman that he can find a way out of the entrenched societal ways  that limit young people, and women from economic participation.  The Wahhabi clerics are seen as a junior partner to the monarchy in Saudi Arabia, and they too see the economic participation of women as necessary in today's tight economic situation. There is even optimism that Merkel could push for better women's rights, and for a Goethe Insitute for better cultural understanding in Riyadh. The U.S. Census Bureau shows incomes of American households, the median household income, surged in 2015 by 5.2%. This increased by $2800 to $56,500. This is the largest increase since 1967. It shows that steadily improving employment and hiring is leading to improvement in incomes for the middle and working class. Ris in minimum wage has also helped . The largest increase was for the lowest 20% of the income tiers. Full time working women did better than men, with increase annually of 2.7% for women, and 1.5% for men. Nocitizen incomes increased 10.5% to $45,100, native born households went up 4.4% to $57,200. The number of people without health insurance also declined from 33 million or 10.4% of the population to  29 million people or 9.1%. Another way the changes are helping lower income households is the decline of the official poverty rate to 13.5% in 2015 by 1.2 percentage points from 14.8% in 2014. Through a series of small incremental steps the path is being set for a recovery of household incomes for the middle class and working class. A bright spot is that the improvement has affected all age groups, household types, regions and ethnic groups, though among full time workers women did better than men. In this recession older white men have had more difficulties getting back into the workforce. This is reflected in the political scene in 2015-2016 for the election season. ...

The UNESCO report on Water scarcity and contaminated water. It creates awareness on World Water Day but comes across as a largely academic exercise, ask any rural woman in India and she knows the significance, question is what should have been done and the resources are there. For action it has to come from nations,, large nations such as India from it's Jal Jeevan Mission, China and Japan transferring the knowhow and technologies to Africa and Latin America and other parts of Asia. The period after a pandemic is also a time to focus efforts on  doing this. How it undermines girls and women and their participation in society is part of the understanding in India, and uppermost in the minds of Indian leaders and technologists, and in the mind of PM Modi. Unfortunately the UNESCO reports fails to even cover right up front in its summary how Jal Jeevan is being done for 1.4 billion people in India to have clean tap water so that people in Africa and Latin America can see that this is possible, if in the Himalayan regions possible in their region it is possible. Experts see strong growth in jobs in 2022. Employers added 431,000 jobs in March. This is the 11th straight month of job gains of over 400,000, the longest period of such growth since 1939. The unemployment rate fell to 3.6%, approaching the low unemployment rate of 3.5% in February 2020, just before the pandemic.

Low unemployment rate is boosting wages but not as much to keep up with inflation. The easing pandemic is also encouraging people to seek jobs. Many retirees are also coming back, and so are women. With 300,000 women joining the workforce in March 2022.

And about a third of people feel that business people, religious figures, and labor union members could make things worse. Yet they oppose actions to reduce child poverty, paid maternity leave and women's rights that help protect women in marraiges, oppose action that would increase incomes for poor and middle class families in favor of the highest income groups. These are questions that don't go away as Democrats could do more for families and children yet Republicans aren't letting their actions match their words.

The lack of demand for Italian bank Unicredit's rights offering. The European Banking Authority is requiring European banks to increase their core Tier 1 capital ratios to 9%, to improve the cushion against a financial crisis. Unicredit will have to raise its reserves by $10 billion. Unicredit's shares have fallen sharply in January, with a decline of over 40%. Spain's Santander which has operations in Latin America was able to raise the $19 billion it needed for the higher capital reserves. Santander converted $6.8 billion euros in bonds into shares, retained profits and sold a stake in its Brazilian operations. The risk is that Unicredit and other European banks might cut lending to meet the new capital standards, leading to credit tightening and reducing economic growth further, says Carl Weinberg, chief economist of High Frequency Economics.
