In it Obama points to the unfinished tasks of his presidency and what comes next as tasks to be done for the U.S. economy. The Economist points out the problems in the 2016 election campaign where there is a lack of discussion of economic issues as a serious problem. Obama lists as priorities efforts to improve conditions of people left out in the recovery, reducing inequality, offering more job opportunities, and increasing productivity.

What is Antifa. during the protests this term keeps coming up, yet no one is really sure what it is.  It started in Germany in the 1920's and basically means anti-fascist or in German antifaschistisch. Most Germany parties from the SPD, CDU and the Greens to other parties accept this as a point of view considering Germany's Nazi past.  Yet DW.com asks is it only referring to all those opposed to fascism in Germany or to black clad anarchists and leftists facing police on German streets. The last such confrontation with police happened in Germany in Hamburg during the 2017 G20 summit. A famous scene from that time is pictured in DW.com. There the meaning becomes complex as the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) adopted the phrase and the disinctinve two flag logo for the 1932 election campaign, in Weimar Germany's last free election, which the Nazis could not win fully but with the left parties split emerged as winner. After the formation of the GDR, the German Democratic Republic in East Germany, the interwar KPD party veterans like Walter Ulbricht came to power in GDR. GDR became part of the Soviet bloc countries during the Cold War and used antifascist in a way that was synonymous with anticapitalism. This same movement then langusihed in the Germany of the early post war years under Cologne's former mayor, Korad Adenauer. In the 1970's and 1980's the left movement revived in Hamburg and Berlin, coalescing with a antinuclear movement and widespread protests against president Reagan's stationing of nuclear missiles on German soil aimed at the Soviet Union bloc. After the reunification the protests against coal, for climate change action, and for anti-globalization. There is even an overlap with anti-Zionism. Germany's internal intelligence agency says the antifa movement is the "main field of agitation" for autonomous leftist groups, with some groups supporting "militant actions." Yet when there are broad uncontroversial protests there can be people from all walks of life, not just the anarchist or far left groups.  So that the protests in the U.S. were met with comments of antifa - Saskia Esken of the SPD saying "58 and atifa. Obviously." To which the General Secretary of the CDU said "Against fascism, and for democracy and human rights. Without violence. Obviously, for me. It's sad that the chairwoman of the SPD lacks the strength to differentiate."  To which Esken says it is only a point of view that antifa refers to, not some action. To which the the youth organization of the Angela Merkel CDU/CSU alliance the Junge Union (founded 1947) replied: " 73 and appalled" getting the final word.  Search for a dictionary and you are left with no clear meaning either. DW.com says Germany's duden dictionary only says antifa refers to the " entirety of the movements and ideologies, which oppose fascism and national socialism."    ...

US ambassador to the UN agencies for food and agriculture describes the precarious situation in Africa and Asia with the lack of food supplies and fertilizer supplies from Ukraine. She says we are nowhere near the 20 million tons that come out of Ukraine normally and there's over 100 ships waiting to get into Black Sea ports. The war is affecting planting season in Ukraine. Cindy McCain is the wife of the former Senator from Arizona, and she says that there is no water in Arizona for agriculture and yet golf courses everywhere, that climate change is a huge part of the food crisis.

Huge transfers of wealth and income were taking place in the US in the last 10 years leading to some of the glaring wealth gaps and unequal distribution of wealth and income in the US. This has threatened the social fabric of American society when combined with other factors such as unjustifiably high healthcare costs, and the shipping of American manufacturing overseas. This WSJ report looks at the transfer of wealth to the financial industry of at least $600 billion but much more than this since 2014 from interest rates of near zero. As over half of the population in the US concentrated at the lower end of the income and wealth spectrum does not invest in stock markets the policy at central banks designed by economists and the financial industry has engineered outcomes that have damaged the social fabric of American society. Distributed throughout the lower income groups, along with Made in America manufacturing, and other policies that takes working families and quality of living into account would have prevented the hugely unequal distribution of wealth and income in society. The pandemic marks a watershed period that has revealed this glaring weakness from long supply chains, to policies that were not good for working families, the impact on climate change, leading to the kinds of changes and investments in working families that are being made by the Biden administration today. ...

Prakash and Ghosh in the Hindusthan Times remind readers that even though India has ambitious plans for renewable energy much remains to be done in shifting to clean coal technologies. An estimated 80% of India's coal plants use obsolete technologies, making this an obvious area for improvement. India plans to make solar the source of 100GW of 175GW it plans to generate in renewable energy by 2022. Yet it must not be forgotten that coal is a dominant source for the foreseeable future and shifting to clean coal technologies is an area that should get top priority from the government. Today India is the third largest in terms of carbon emissions after the U.S and China.

During the freeze offs when due to winter storms across the northeast and other parts of the US the gas supplies were down by 7% the supplies of natural gas in the US were 5.2% above the usual average. Natural gas prices are 30% below the price in October at the start of the heating season demand in the US. This plentiful supply will help Americans weather this winter so much better than last winter, and reducing the price of a key input for many products in the industrial economy such as cement, plastic and fertilizer to reduce overall inflation. In this way the US is pursuing climate change action under president Biden with policies that take action on the Cost of Living front that affect ordinary Americans at the same time for a two pronged effort.

The New York Times reports that comments from Obama administration officials describe an alarming loss of trust and confidence between China and the USA over the last two years. David Shambaugh, director of the China Policy program at George Washington University, says the administration had hoped to work with China on major challenges like climate change, nuclear nonproliferation, and a new global economic order. China, he says, has failed to step up and play that role. He describes the Chinese as responding as an increasingly narrow-minded, self-interested truculent, hyper-nationalist, and powerful country. Jeffrey Baker, a key China policy adviser in the White House, says China's responses reflected a sense in Beijing that China was a rising power and the USA a declining power, especially after the strong rebound of the Chinese economy after the 2008 crisis. The administration is determined to counteract that impression. Other factors complicate things. China is facing a transition to a new leadership in the next year. There are differences within the Chinese Communist party leadership ranks about the direction China should take. Trade and currency issues have come to the point where American public opinion is shifting greatly, with educated professionals changing their views on trade and currency matters. See the recent WSJ/NBC September 2010 poll on world trade, reported by Murray and Belkin in WSJ, Oct 2, 2010. The Obama administration cannot ignore the deep concerns of the American people on these issues. The House overwhelmingly voted in September to threaten China with tariffs on its exports if the Chinese currency, the renminbi, is not allowed to appreciate significantly enough (experts estimate that it is overvalued by 20%). It is not clear whether the Administration's rhetoric on this issue is to assuage public opinion in a business as usual manner, or expected to achieve substantative results to rebalance world trade. The G-20 summit in S. Korea leaves this change for well into the future- China with current account surplus of 5.8% of GDP in 2009 is expected to lower this to 4% by 2015. With the high jobless rate in the US and the large and rising current account deficit, the United States may have reached a juncture where this cannot be put off well into the future years. Other issues, the different foreign policy objectives, and differing perceptions of China and the US of each other, the relationship with US allies in the region, may create additional tensions. These tensions may be navigated by governments of both countries, but the shift in American public opinion on trade, currency and jobs issues will require tangible and real change. As trade tensions will only increase in the next two years with the lack of fiscal stimulus on the jobs front, and no significant change in jobs expected from the Fed's purchase af additional Treasury debt, and a sense that the mutual benefit in the trade relationship with China has been lost to America's serious detriment. China's position may be perceived as stronger than it really is from the faster rebound from the 2008 crisis, and may in reality not be as Jeffrey Baker sees it. As David Barboza has reported in the New York Times, and experts have pointed out, the huge amount of lending encouraged by the government has accentuated weaknesses in the Chinese economy. A significant amount has gone into real estate speculation and will only increase the bad loans on the books of China's banks. This happens at the very time that growth is expected to slow down and make it harder to absorb the bad loans, as was done in the past. ...

Shoppers are showing resistance to price increases in retail stores. The Fed under Jay Powell has taken a resolute stand against inflation slowing inflation in house sales and rental, in automobile pricing and other sectors of the US economy. New investments under the climate change bill passed in Congress and the CHIPS and Science Act, Inflation Reduction Bill, mean more factory openings and jobs in America. Without the developing countries no real progress can be made on climate change or on emissions control. Climate change was a key focus of this summit in Itlay for the G-8 but with India and China only on the sidelines and acting more as an opposition excluded from the main deliberations the whole climate change agenda had to be shelved. The European countries lose influence in an enlarged summit so the G-8 keeps going along. Sweden holds the rotating Presidency of the EU, so the Swedes are there also. And so is Portugal in away with Manuel Barroso representing the European Commisssion. Except Japan, Asia is not represented, and no country from Africa or Latin America is represented. The European club looks like an anachronism and it is. Merkel and Sarkozy say they know this, but there is too much resistance in Europe to giving up this privilege. When the Guardian reported that Italy may be left out in future meetings of an expanded summit. the Italian press and the Italian prime minister Berlusconi denounced the report. Other countries that lose influence in an expanded arrangement are Canada and Japan. ...

OBama sees the G-20 as the really important meeting, and the G-8 meetings as a smaller less significant meeting between the G20 meeting in London and the next one in Pittsburgh. This however leaves the other leaders outside of the G-8 meeting on the sidelines at G-8 meetings, which does not work very well. In this meeting in Italy, Turkey and Egypt were also present, as were leaders from Africa, and from Australia.

Kevin Roose explains the unique structure of Open AI which has 4 board members and is structured as a nonprofit with the overriding goal of safety and making AI beneficial to humanity. Ilya Sutskeyer is chief scientist and member of the board. He says Altman's ouster was necessary to protect OpenAI's mission of making Artificial Intelligence beneficial to humanity. Mr. Altman was asked to join a video meeting of the board on Friday 17th November and was immediately fired. Open AI started in 2015 as a nonprofit and in 2019 setup a capped profit subsidiary in which investors returns are capped in relation to the investment. It keeps the nonprofit in charge and able to fire the CEO of the profit subsidiary and keeps the mission as overarching for both subsidiaries. There are three other members who hold no shares in the company and who are bound to a fiduciary duty to "create safe AI that is broadly beneficial to humanity." Tasha McCauley and Helen Toner are the two other members who are members of the Effective Altruism movement who have raised concerns that AI could lead to the extinction of humanity. Republicans may not say humans cause climate change- only 31%, but a majority of Republicans- 57%, say action is needed to control carbon emissions. The results are part of research published in journal Climatic Change, research done at the UC Santa Barbara.This is good news for future efforts to control carbon emissions. Only 20% of Republicans support a 20% quota for renewable energy, yet 74% think its good to do research on renewable energy. A paradox? No, say experts as there is a long history of controlling and regulating pollutants in the air and water since the fifties in which all parties supported the efforts. Its mostly they say about Republican identity in saying human activities don't cause global warming, when it comes to living and breathing clean air Republicans by a majority are on board everywhere including the South.

Marie Le Pen and the National Front performed very poorly in French elections. Perceptions of voters are changing. The efforts in tackling the coronavirus, effective vaccination drives, public health protection, and building access to vaccine supplies, have shown the need for good leadership that believes in a science driven direction. Immigration is no longer the issue it once was and in some polls it is seventh on the list after climate change, economy,  education, pensions. The National Front in France and AfD are losing regional elections and popularity is dropping to about 10%. The Greens party in Germany and the Gaullist Republicans in France are being revitalized. Other factors are also present. The search for authenticity and effectiveness. After dismissing a popular prime minister who tackled the health crisis in 2020 France's president Macron fared badly in recent regional elections. His party En Marche was hastily put together in the last year of the administration of Mr. Hollande, the predecessor from the Socialist party. Its initial popularity has not turned into grassroots support. Mr. Hollande, Mr. Macron, are now seen as one term presidents. It is not so much that the centrist parties are gaining as a search for parties that can provide effective alternatives in the face of the challenges placed on the world by the pandemic- renewal of supply chains. climate change, public services, infrastructure, health, education, lives of the elderly. In the US, Europe, and India, countries in Latin America, there is a growing awareness of the need to rebuild with the people in mind, the people who have suffered badly in this health crisis and the financial crisis that preceded it in 2009. ...

The head of the Liberal-National coalition wins the election in Australia coming from behind because of inflighting in his coalition. Australia had 5 prime ministers in 6 years because of differences within the Liberal party.  Mr. Morrison's coalition was leading or won in 74 seats with 75% of votes counted, and headed for a 76 vote majority. Morrison campaigned alone on economic issues while the opposition Labour party led by Mr. Shorten, a trade union leader campaigned on climate change and better relations with China. ScoMo kade this election about the economic choice for Australians and who they could trust for jobs and the future. Morrison had just replaced Malcolm Turnbull only 9 months ago. Mr. Morrison planned to continue with the close relations with the U.S. as it confronts China on trade and technology issues. Mr. Shorten would have diverged from the U.S. on these issues, even though Australia has already turned down Huawei 5G on its telecom networks. With so much infighting in both parties, no prime minister has served a full term in Australia since 2007. Every 3 years Australia has an election. Voting is mandatory with a A$20 fine for not voting resulting in 95% of 16.3 million voters voting this time, compared to 55% in the U.S. and 69% in UK for their last elections. ...

Stevenson says the address was filled with King's "urgency of the now," in pushing for progressive values in an unabashed manner. Freed from the constraints of the first term Obama senses the urgency of the moment if he is not to lose the opportunity to have contributed to the march of progressive values in America during his term as president. A cautious president feels the urgency of the progressive spirit that marked his early years, his first book, his work as a community activist and Illinois legislator; if all this is not to be lost in the burdens of the presidency, the pressures of politics, the fundraising machinery, election manoeuvring and vote getting that secured the presidency.
