In his State of the Union Address president Biden set the tone for the next 2 years of his term, and in preparation for another term to Build Back Better for America. He talked about his efforts to address the needs of America in rebuilding aging infrastructure, restoring its place in manufacturing, chips and science, and addressing climate change with trillions of dollars of investments. No longer would crowding out of government investment happen as it did in the last two decades with neglect of infrastructure, manufacturing, workers and families, and massive misallocation of capital in capital markets. David Brooks who has covered Joe Biden for decades from his time in the U.S. Senate to Vice President under president Obama, says he comes not from an elite tradition of Democrats such as Adlai Stevenson, but that of Harry Truman, for and of the common man- the "average Joe" in American slang.  Strengths Brooks finds in Joe Biden are his emotional transparency, knowing at any time in interactions what Biden is thinking and feeling. The candour in his conversations. Biden is also like Truman in how spirited he is in defending the common man and his interests in the true Democratic tradition of being for the working class and ordinary people, something lost in recent years. Having lost his wife and daughter in a traffic accident when he was first elected to the Senate, also gives Joe Biden a sense of how it feels to go through this experience. He later lost a son to cancer.  Biden is now the front runner for president. Like Truman Biden has faced criticism for speaking his mind, sometimes awkwardly. Yet as David Brooks points out Biden brings some of the qualities of a Harry Truman, at a time when the mood of the nation has changed and the Democratic Party is returning to its roots fighting for the common man. Harry Truman is thought of highly as American president because of the qualities of simplicity, courage, tenacity, and hard work that he brought to the presidency during the war and during the recovery after 1945. Few people are aware of the fact that Harry Truman returned to the small town of Independence, Missouri, after retiring, at a time when there was no presidential pension, and lived a simple life accepting no favors, without any of the trappings of a former president. ...

As to financing of $6000 child tax credit costing about $100 billion a year as estimated by Office for Responsible Budget some of it would come from the $360 billion in tax savings over 10 years by Medicare negotiation of prices with Pharma, other would come from taxing corporations and high incomes at rates that are similar to what firemen and teachers pay of 20-25%. In his speech at North Carolina Aug 15, 2024 at Wake Tech in Raleigh, president Biden said- "You know how many billionaires there are in America?  There’s now a thousand billionaires.  You know what their average tax they pay — federal tax?  8.2 percent.  Anybody want to trade with a billionaire — their tax rate?  (Laughter.)  Well, guess what?  If they just paid 25 percent — it’s not the highest bracket by a longshot — 25 percent — do you know what that would do?  That would raise $40- — $400 billion over the next 10 years.  Imagine what we could do with that.  We could fundamentally sh- — slash the federal deficit.  We could make sure there’s home care.  We could do so many things — consequential — including finally making sure that we take care of Ukraine from that butcher Putin.  (Applause.) ...

Supreme Court Justice could simply have retired and let then president Obama appoint her successor. She decided to stay into her eighties. As a result president Trump will choose a conservative as her successor and has the votes lined up in the Senate. In Britain the retirement age was changed from lifetime to 75 by an Act in 1959. In India the Constitution set the retirement age for the Supreme Court at 65. Only in the U.S. is this practice maintained.

Vice President Biden talks with Charlie Rose and tells hime he thinks BP has done the best they could . Apart from being slow in giving the correct figures about how much oil is coming out of the pipe, Biden says BP as responded to every request of the Obama administration. Charlie Rose specifically asks Biden, hasn't his administration lost its story and isn't it looking more and more like the Carter Administration during the Iranian Crisis. Biden's response is that the President has acted swiftly. Rose asks about the talk of a new norm for unemployment as unemployment remains sticky on the way down, and hiring has not picked up though layoffs have slowed down. Biden's response is that he and Obama don't buy into a new norm and are out to build anew economy. It appears there is a misconnect somewhere between the questions about genuine concerns and the responses.

The Bipartisan Debt Agreement passes the US House of Representatives with 149 Republicans supporting Speaker and Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and 165 Democrats. It passed the House 314 to 117 votes. It also asserts Speaker McCarthy's leadership in the House and Mitch McConnell's in the Senate for Republicans seeking a bipartisan approach to bring Americans together on vital issues.

California says Arizona should cut back on its use of water. Arizona says it needs water for Pheonix and Tucson. About 80% of the water goes into agricultural use where there are ways to make it more efficient. The Interior Department suggests each state cut back use by the same percentage. Aridification in the region has caused concern about the levels of water in Lake Mead which is fed through the Hoover Dam by the Colorado river.
