Ormat, a geothermal energy company, faces resistance to a new geothermal plant in Nevada.  130 residents in the desert town of Gerlach fear it will affect spring water in the ground. Ormat has 15 plants in Nevada that produce 433 megawatts or electricity for 325,000 homes. NYT shows this as an example of how conservationists who favor green energy find themselves pitted against energy companies doing renewable energy for profit. The Burning Man festival held in the desert has a large carbon footprint every year.

He is the author of two best selling biographies of American presidents at crucial points in the American experiment on Harry Truman (1992) and John Adams (2001), for which he won 2 Pulitzer Prizes. He saw writing as painting in words, and writing as an art form, did extensive research so that his Truman book took 10 years, the Adams book 7 years.

Spotify told employees they can work remotely, even in another state. Company after company is vacating space or reducing the amount of space it uses in the high rise buildings in New York City. Germany has a patchwork of restrictions to tackle coronavirus. This is a serious problem during the third wave in April 2021. There is a lack of clarity as the 16 states within Germany's federal structure each make their own rules. This has weakened the power of the federal government and chancellor Merkel in setting rules for the whole country. A You.Gov poll shows 53% of Germans support the federal government setting the rules. Interior minister Seehofer is considering a new federal law to make this happen.

The French government has pledged to relocate more production back to France. French regional elections show a defeat by Conservatives of Le Pen's far right party and president Macron's party. Conservatives maintained a lead of 10% of the vote over Le Pen's party. Macron's party failed to make it to double digits in the vote with about 7%. Sixty six percent of voters stayed away from the poll. The Conservatives and the Socialist parties did well holding on to their regions. This changes the landscape for the presidential election in 2022.

The strike at Royal Mail in the UK as workers reject a 2% raise not enough to cover inflation, higher costs for food and energy. Royal Mail has 140,000 workers. A similar strike over a 2% raise is affecting Britain's transportation sector with rail employees on strike on certain days. This is the result of Tory Conservative policies. In France there is a cap on energy costs, no such cap exits in Britain which has inflation exceeding 10%, and workers struggling after years of austerity cuts.

Climate scientists says this is a threat from climate change that is overlooked, the effects of flooding more inland, away from big rivers. Storms in the mountains of eastern Kentucky dumped 16 inches of rain over a 5 day period resulting in severe flooding and 44 deaths, homes swept away. Storms of this type are seen in other places such as Germany with fast floods.

Key points in the National Digital Communications Policy 2018 to be approved by the Modi cabinet are that every citizen of India will have 50 mbps access to broadband by 2022. Key development institutions will have 100 mbps speed. 

10 million public wifi spots are planned for 2022. Expand the ecosystem to 5 billion connected devices by 2022. And attract $100 billion in new investment. Under National Digital Grid the National Fibre Authority will be created to have the supporting organization to achieve these goals.

In 2018 China, India, and America are Africa's largest trading partners. India is building 18 new embassies in African countries. Greater openness to trade and investment is leading to GDP growth in Africa, 40% higher than in 2000, which is still low by comparison with Asian countries. The Economist says African countries can benefit by drawing investment from all sides and all countries, so that Africa benefits the most. Chinese investment, and Indian investment can happen side by side with investment from America, Britain and France.

Boris Johnson leads by a wide margin for election of a leader of the Conservative Party to succeed Theresa May as prime minister. Ms. May announced that she will set a date to resign from the leadership of the party after another Brexit vote in parliament. Mr. Johnson who has 39% support with Mr. Raab at 13%. Johnson favors a no-deal Brexit and no customs union arrangement with the European Union. His pro-Brexit wing lacks the support of other factions in his party and in parliament.

Spain lifts its state of emergency and reopens it borders after 13 weeks o coronavirus with 28,000 dead and 245,000 cases. Prime minister Pedro Sanchez said "we can all be a wall against the virus or the means of its transmission. It depends on each and every one of us." He said the government was building up its strategic reserve of essential products to cope with any potential second wave. Masks will continue to be mandatory in public spaces when physical distancing of 1.5 metres is not possible.

Virgin Atlantic, the airline of Richard Branson, gets a lifeline in the form of a package of financial help of $1.5 billion to prevent bankruptcy. Virgin Group will retain 51% control and Delta Airlines 49%. The UK has opted not to undertake a airline bailout strategy. Branson has continued to make speculative investments including one with Bain Capital for $2 billion on three cruise ships for Virgin Voyages, a order for cruise ships made before the pandemic. The Virgin Group makes $150 million a year in revenue.

New bicycle lanes in Paris, Milan, to Mexico City are changing the way cities see people getting to work or moving round. New bicycle lanes are popping up in many cities. In Paris the plan by order of the mayor is to provide 400 miles of pop-up bicycle lanes throughout Greater Paris. Car lanes are giving way and being transformed into bicycle lanes. 

Oakland has moved to have 10% of the roads for bicycle lanes. In Montreal extra 70 miles are added. Bogota added 47 miles.

In an effort to take decisive action early the quarantine is extended from Lombardy to the whole of Italy. Travel is restricted to places where people live. Italy has suspended payment of bills, taxes and mortgages. All open air assembly and sporting events are banned. Italy's quarantine is similar to the quarantine in Hubei province China, where cases have dropped sharply showing that it worked in China. Italy is also setting aside 10 billion euros for the effort to contain the coronavirus crisis and mitigate the economic impact.

The last one in 1990-91 referring to the savings and loan crisis.A $7 trillion economy then needed the $300 billion Resolution Trust Corporation. Now we have a $11 trillion economy, he estimates $2 trillion in capitalization has been lost already. He sees this as messier because of the very reason that was cited in defence of taking higher risks with mortgages, that the risk now was all across the financial system as these mortgage securities were packaged and sold between financial organizations throughout the financial system. Its now messier to fix as it can't be fixed by focusing on one area as its spread throughout. Note that the German government intervened more aggressively than the US Government, in supporting a bank, Deutsche Industriebank with a $4.8 billion bailout.

C. Raja Mohan says in The Indian Express that India needs to look at the big picture of modernization in a new world for world trade in which the US is reindustrializing, Europe is reindustrializing, and India is on the road to modernization by 2040 over the next 15 years. All three processes are happening at the same time. 

The old order of world trade destroyed the industrial base of the US and Europe, it also neglected India's modernization, happening with the unwitting cooperation and connivance of the business interests of the US and Europe. It will do little for India. India must also change it's industrial structure and modernization effort to fit into this new world and bring it's strengths to build a new world in which the US, EU and India modernize their economies, manufacturing base, and infrastructure in a win-win for all sides.

At a videoconference between DJT and European leaders on Aug. 14, 2025, initiated by Germany's Merz , it was decided that no territory exchanges are to be discussed at DJT Putin meeting in Alaska. DJT and the Europeans will simply seek an immediate ceasefire followed by talks between Zelensky and Putin with DJT offering to be there to mediate differences. DJT says there will be strong sanctions on Russia in the event no ceasefire is reached. Legislation in Congress with 80 senators on board a clear majority of both parties is for putting a 500% tariff on countries such as China and India that import Russian oil. These imports exceed $100 billion each for China and India. DJT has placed a 50% duty on India if negotiations do not yield results on this issue. This is seen in Congress as fueling the continuation of the Russian war in Ukraine.
