Egypt's new prime minister, Hazem el-Beblawi, in July 2013, is a professor of Economics who received his doctorate from the University of Paris in 1964. He has taught economics at universities in Egypt, Kuwait, France and the U.S. After 15 years teaching at the University of Alexandria, he worked in development banks in the Middle East for another 15 years, joining the Finance Ministry in 2011. He resigned in protest against military shooting of protesters at the time. Egypt has about $14.9 billion in reserves according to Egypt's central bank, less than the $15 billion needed for three months of imports. Egypt needs to negotiate a $4.8 billion loan from the IMF. Earler negotiations were stymied by the military in 2011, and el-Beblawi will now be negotiating with the head of the Constitutional Court as president, after the ouster of president Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Tokyo Stock Exchange president, Akira Kiyota, says the TSE is hoping for 70 IPO's in 2013 if all goes well. The TSE and the Osaka Securities Exchange merged in Jan 2013, forming the Tokyo Exchange Group, the third largest exchange in market capitalization. TSE president is from Daiwa Securities and the OSE president is from Nomura Securities. The TSE hope to attract more overseas companies to list, developing into a market that is open 24 hours. Other strategies include developing securities markets in emerging market countries.

Researchers at MIT, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Hebrew University, have released a report on the dangerous effects of air pollution from the dependence on coal for energy in China. The report shows that areas in northern China north of the Huai River in central China -where coal use is much higher with government support than the area south of the river- have about 5 years lower life expectancy than areas south of the river.

Shell's new CEO in 2014, Ben Van Beurden, is from the "downstream side" of refining and chemicals, where there is less tolerance for the cost overruns seen in heavy engineering type oil exploration projects. He is Dutch and worked for Shell for 30 years. He says profits are "too low" and Shell will focus on reduced spending and capital efficiency. Shell is withdrawing from exploration in Alaska and divesting some assets.
