Krugman points out that the U.S. Federal Reserve's forecasts in March 2012 show the U.S. will experience low inflation and high unemployment for many years. These forecasts are in sharp contrast to the expectations in the equity markets based on an uptick for a couple of months of unemployment numbers. The Fed's own statements suggest the improvement in hiring may be temporary and a response to the overreaction in hiring in 2009-2010 to the financial crisis, and not a lasting improvement. The Fed pointed out that the long term unemployed are at about 40% of the total unemployed and the share of the population that is working in March 2012 has barely budged from 58% in 2009.

Forecasts show global oil output exceeding demand by 630,000 barrels a day for the fourth quarter of 2012. This is partly the result of extra oil supplies coming in from Saudi Arabia to counter the situation with Iran at the same time as oil demand is slowing with the economic slowdown in the U.S., Europe and China. Prices of crude declined to $85.73 a barrel on the Nymex, and $107.85 for Brent crude on the ICE Futures Exchange on Oct. 24, 2012. Goldman Sachs cut the 2013 price forecast for Brent crude to $110 a barrel from $130. Earlier the QE III monetary easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve had rallied oil prices because of a weakening of the dollar.

The meeting of EU leaders in Brussels in Oct. 2012 focusses on the issue of setting up banking supervision for eurozone banks. France pushed hard for setting up the banking supervisory authority by Jan 2013. German chancellor Merkel facing elections in Sept. 2013 pushed for a longer time frame into 2013. Setting up the banking supervision, a basic part of the new eurozone financial architecture, would clear the way for direct aid to Spanish banks. Boskin sees the potential for trade at $50 billion based on trade models. This would help change the landscape in the South Asian region after decades of neglect, strife and conflicts and is long overdue to benefit the billion people on the subcontinent....

U.S. auto sales in May 2012 increased by 26% over the prior year. Toyota sales were up 87% to 203,000 bringing its market share up by 5 percentage points to 15.2%. Honda's sales were up 48% to 134,000, according to Autodata. Overall seasonally adjusted sales were up from the 11.7 million vehicles in 2011 to 13.8 million vehicles in May 2012. Ford's sales were up to 216,000, with a 30% increase in sales of F-series pickup trucks. A cause for concern for Ford would be the 35% of sales in May to rental companies and fleet buyers.

With government bond yields at 12% in Jan 2012 Portugal is unlikely to be able to return to bond markets in 2013, even if fiscal targets are met, according to analysts. The S&P downdgrade of Portugal's debt to junk rating has worsened prospects. Portugal's economy is expected to contract 5.8% in 2012 and 3.7% in 2013, according to Citibank. Portugal has to repay 9 billion euros in debt due in Sept. 2013.

Hong Kong's new chief executive, Leung Chun-ying, is intervewed by the WSJ's Te-Ping Chen, Jeffrey Ng, and Robert Thomson. He was elected by 1200 business and political leaders in 2012. The term ends in 2017, by which time China says it will hold direct elections with universal suffrage in Hong Kong. Leung plans pro-growth policies and says Hong Kong's growth rate of about 4% for the last two decades lags too far behind Singapore's over 6% growth rate. No action is planned to reduce property prices by providing new land supply. He sees more room for growth in maritime insurance and ship financing services to complement Hong Kong's development as a global shipping center, citing London as an example. To improve the problem of cramped housing space and small apartments he is looking at ways to build new towns in the New Territories, which are on the border with mainland China. Leung will not change Hong Kong's flat tax structure, and is not going to follow Singapore's example in granting tax holidays. Growth in China will be about 7% in 2012, and future growth will depend on how fast China shifts from export led growth to domestic consumption....

The British set up a protectorate in Kashmir under the British Empire ruled by a Sikh king from 1850 to 1948. What this says is that after a unsettled period till 1948 to 2020, the region is likely to return to its history of tolerance for different people from South Asia, with one huge difference, the rapid modernization of the region in the 21st century replacing the feudal poverty and backwardness of a overtaxed and underdeveloped farmers communities. ...

India's new vaccine policy and how it will vaccinate fully with 2 doses India's entire population by December 2021 is  outlined in the federal government's affidavit to the Supreme Court. The vaccine supplies of about 1880 million doses will be supplied by 5 Indian pharmaceutical vaccine manufacturers. 1350 million doses will be supplied by the manufacturers between August and December with 500 million doses made available by July 31 to the government.
