But polls show two thirds of the respondents see the economy as being worse or the same as in 2011. Alexis Tsipras of the Syriza Party stresses in his election campaign in September 2015 that even though he has accepted the Third Bailout Program from the EU, only Syriza will act so that the most vulnerable in society are protected. Tsipras openly accepts his mistakes and says he has learnt from his mistake of underestimating the resolve of the EU about its plans for the Greek economy. Syriza has also taken a sympathetic view of refugees and migrants coming to Greece. The Popular Unity Party and finance minister Varoufakis, a breakaway group from Syriza that advocates going back to the drachma, are not expected to do well in the election. New Democracy Party led by Meimarakis stresses in its campaign that Syriza is turning the recovery into an experiment and lacks the experience to implement the Third Bailout Program neogtiated withe the EU. Syriza and New Democracy are the leading parties in the election. It shows how much has changed in 2015, that the only two parties with some credibility are Syriza under Tsipras and New Democracy under Meimarakis, both having made errors but having the candour and courage to tell Greek voters that they have learned from their mistakes....

HP's Apotheker emphasized in an earnings call "the tablet effect is real and sales of the TouchPad are not meeting our expectations. The velocity of change in the personal device marketplace continues to increase as the competitive landscape is growing increasingly more complex especially around the personal computing area." By the tablet effect Apotheker means the Apple iPad. The tablet is becoming popular but not the other tablets from Samsung, HP and other makers. It is the iPad that is the product customers turn to and the tablets of competitors are not accepted as a substitute. As a result CEO Apotheker plans to exit the tablet and PC business.

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry said in a nationally televised debate with Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman, Michelle Bachmann and Ron Paul, that "maybe it's time to have some provocative language in this country." He did not hesitate to call Social Security "a monstrous lie," and a "Ponzi scheme." He said making economic decisions on the basis of climate change science is "nonsense," saying Galileo got outvoted for a spell. And he had this to say about Obama, Rove and Bush. About Obama- "has some of the poorest intel of a president in the history of this country, or he was an abject liar to the American people." About Karl Rove- "Karl has been over the top for a long time in some of his remarks, so, you know, I'm not responsible for Karl anymore." And Bush- "I don't think America needs to be in the business of adventurism."

Rick Perry faces criticism from Republican candidates Romney, Bachmann, Huntsman and Paul at the Republican presidential candidate debate in Tampa on September 12, 2011. Perry defended his remarks on Social Security by telling viewers- "slam dunk guaranteed that program is going to be in place." Romney suggested Perry had been served four aces for his jobs record in Texas. And Santorum accused Perry of providing education assistance to illegal immigrants to attract the Latino vote. Perry defended his remarks on Fed chairman Bernanke printing money amounting to treasonous behaviour.

Will reminds readers about what King wrote in his "Letter from Birmingham Jail," about being labeled an extremist, the same words that he sees Democrats saying about Ryan's plans as being extreme for Medicare and Social Security, now that he is Romney's running mate in the U.S. presidential race. "But though I was initially disappointed at being categorized as an extremist, as I continued to think about the matter I gradually gained a measure of satisfaction...Perhaps the South, the nation and the world are in dire need for creative extremists." Will's point is that Ryan is unfairly being labeled an extremist for coming up with creative solutions because "ending Medicare as we know it" will happen though the laws of arithmetic for the U.S. deficit with runaway health care spending and uncontrollable medical care price inflation. This would produce more drastic results than through the kinds of creative changes that Ryan is proposing. Will's other point is that the entitlement spending increases cannot be solved by simply raising taxes on the rich especially at a time when costs are out of control. This is especially true because the U.S. economy depends on private sector confidence and investment for growth, and even more so now that the stimulus has had limited results and served its purpose in crisis management. Ryan has also modified some of his ideas in discussions with other voices in his party, a process which will continue to evolve with the infusion of ideas from Dave Camp, Romney, and others in his party....

The P5+1 talks with Iran are stalled and not ending in agreement by August 2012. The former head of military intelligence of Israel, says the Obama administration needs to tell the Israeli parliament Knesset directly that preventing a nuclear Iran is a U.S. interest and the U.S. will take military action if needed. He points out that the U.S. with its larger operational capabilities can take additional time compared to the Israeli capabilities, but this goes against Israel's creed of not relying on the U.S. for its defense or outsourcing defense. For the Israelis to rely on the U.S. it needs this clear committment and statement of intention. In addition the Obama administration needs to take five steps to reassure Israel says Yadlin: a statement to Congress in writing that the president reserves the right to take military action, increased military presence in the gulf, provide advanced military technology and intelligence to Israel to enlarge Israel's window for military action in exchange for giving sanctions and diplomacy more time, talk publicly about the dangers of reconstitution of Iran's nuclear program, and commit to the security of U.S. allies in the gulf. The strategy Yadlin emphasizes is that if this is going to work for a peaceful goal, preparing for war is essential....

Glenn Kessler goes over the numbers cited by Romney and Obama and finds distortions on both sides. Which leaves voters with going by the records of Romney as governor of Massachusetts and Obama as president during 2004-2008, and their clearly stated policy committments on how they would approach healthcare, Medicare, Social Security, unemployment, incomes, and other issues uppermost on the minds of American voters.
