Automakers had U.S. sales of 1.2 million cars and light trucks in December, 2011, an increase of 8.7% over Dec. 2010, acccording to Autodata Corp. Total light vehicle sales for 2011 were 12.8 millon, an increase of 10.3% over 2010. Chrysler showed a 37% increase in Dec. 2011 over Dec. 2010, Ford 10%, and GM 4.6%. For 2011 Chrysler showed the biggest increase in sales over 2010 of 26%, followed by Ford at 11% and GM at 13%. Toyota's sales declined in 2011 by 6.7% to 1.64 million. Honda's sales for 2011 declined by 7.1% to 1.15 million. American manufacturers introduced new models in the small and midsize segments to take market share from the Japanese. Ford plans a new version of the Fusion and Chrysler will introduce the Dart in the small car segment. GM and Ford are forecasting auto sales above 13.5 million for 2012 in the U.S. market.

Over 60% of GM revenues in North America come from larger vehicles and SUV's. This is the situation as oil prices are rising and change is sweeping across the Middle East. Another problem is overcapacity in the auto industry. The overinvestment is highlighted by the recent decision of Geely to invest $10 billion in Volvo to double production to 800,000 units over 5 years. The car industry can produce 94 million cars the Economist magazine estimates, and demand worldwide is only 64 million. One estimate shows production capacity could reach 40 million in China by 2015!

Content Links 1. CANTARELL OIL FIELD LIVING UP TO WORST CASE SCENARIO OF INTERNAL PEMEX REPORT. That worst case scenario detailed in an internal oil company report suggested earlier in 2006 that the field's output could fall by about 75% by 2008. Output at Cantarell fell from 1.92 million barrels a day in January to 1.74 million barrels a day in June according to the Mexican Energy Ministry. (Mexico's total crude oil production was 3.3 million barrels a day and it exported 2 million barrels a day in 2005). 2. POLITICS AND HISTORY CONSTRAIN PEMEX EXPLORATION. The Mexican constitution bars Pemex from joining with foreign oil companies to conduct exploration in difficult environment like deep water exploration using the technology of privte oil companies. Mexico however depends on oil revenuesfor a third of its federal budget and declining oil output and future price declines could severely dent Mexico's finances. So there is a new awareness that this situation requires change and action to encourage collaboration and investment in exploration and new technologies. Felipe Calderon who won narrowly in the July Presidential election promised such changesto allow private oil companies to participate. Industry analysts believe that Mexico could find new fields in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico if it could use advanced exploration technology....

Adjusted for the 35,000 workers on strike at Verizon counted as unemployed, the 38,000 jobs figure in the government report is still considered quite low. Especially striking even as unemployment drops for May from 5.0% to 4.7% is that the drop is attributed to people dropping out of the work force. The average monthly gain for the March through May is 116,000 jobs well short of the 240,000 jobs added on average in 2014-2015. Average hourly earnings were up 0.2% in May and up 2.5% for the year. A widely accepted measure of unemployment that includes workers too discouraged to look for work or working part time because of a lack of full time job was at 9.7%. The labor force participation rate was at 62.6%.

The widely respected finance minister of South Africa, Pravin Gordhan, is fired leading to calls for the resignation of president Jacob Zuma, and a call for a no confidence vote in parliament by the opposition parties. The Rand drops by 5% after the news of the resignation. This news comes as South Africa's business community and the CEO initiative were making efforts to stabilize the rand and avoid new credit downgrades for the South African currency.

Greg Ip points out that Saudi Arabia's effort to get back market share is not working so far as shale oil producers continue to increase production. OPEC now confronts a very different competitor in the U.S. shale oil industry- 77 different producers produce 75% of American oil production, each acting like a tech startup, with access to capital markets which are continuing to provide capital. These producers can increase or reduce production with agility, and act differently from state owned oil producers or the major western oil companies. He cites Goldman Sachs figures showing average rig in Texas Eagle Ford shale yielding 5000 barrels a day in the first year compared to 2000 barrels in 2011. This analysis also shows shale oil production cost on a declining curve- $80 in 2014 and $60 in 2015, which could upset Saudi calculations with the advances in technology. Majors such as ExxonMobil are also moving forward with the technological advances.

JD Powers survey has lowered its annual sales rate to less than 15 million vehicles going down to 14.8 millon annual sales rate in ths spring 2008. GM and Ford are still looking at sales rate much above 15 million. What if the credit squeeze, oil prices and the recession lower sales to below Powers surveys? GM and Ford now have more flexibility to cut production with their new UAW agreements and this should helpreduce production volume. Also the auto companies have offered buyouts to every unionized employee. Expect further production cuts, as the auto companies are now going in the direction of cutting production rather than flooding the market with incentives. Also the pace of restructuring is likely to accelerate as the economy deriorates in 2008 and beyond. Carefully considering all the information available upto this point in Glinfo it does not appear that things will improve by yearend 2008 as some are expecting, hoping against hope.

Empty storage tanks and empty supertankers and idle storage terminals are to be seen in the area of Cameron Parish, in coastal Louisiana. This is where Cheniere Energy opened a $1.4 billion liquefied natural gas terminal recently. This was part of a $7 billion construction of 8 new LNG terminals over the last 5 years around the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast. Only a year ago this seemed like an attractive investment as LNG supplies to the USA appeared to be on the rise. But that is not the way it turned out. By October its estimated that the USA will have in storage 3.1 trillion cubic feet of gas, about 1 trillion less than the full storage capacity.This is after the summer use and reduced LNG imports. This is 1 trillion feet of idle unused capacity or about 25% idle capacity. What has happened is that with a nuclear plant down in Japan because of an earthquake and drought conditions in Spain limiting hydroelectric dam electricity prices these countries pay has jumped and LNG tankers have been diverted to these places instead of the USA. Because natural gas prices unlike oil prices are set on a regional basis, prices in other regions and countries are several dollars higher than the US price of $11.80 per thousand cubic feet, which is itself up from $7.50 per thousand cubic feet at the beginning of 2008. The reason for all this unused capacity is that imports are 40% of what they were for last year and capacity has been doubled. Producers have also put more supplies on the spot market and less on long term contracts to make higher profits thus raising prices even higher. Some analysts believe that it was a bad thing for the US not to import more as 3.1 trillion cubic feet of gas in storage will not meet expected demand in the winter heating season of 2008-2009. And with global demand up and global supplies not coming up fast enough gas prices may increase still further. Demand is growing at about 7% in the developing world, and about 2.6% worldwide so demand in the USA is not increasing at this time. The new refineries and petrochemical plants going up in the Middle East and Asia will increase demand further for natural gas. The whole issue has not been prominent because the US meets only 3% of its natural gas needs through LNG. ...

How much is the drop in sales of light trucks, including truck based SUV's? This is occurring in the middle of bigger changes, and as GM moves to introduction of more fuel efficient cars with better quality and appeal to younger demographics. GM is restructuring to transform itself into a global company with growing Asian sales and shifting volumes overseas. It is shifting employee and capital base to more countries overseas to create new opportunities and make GM a new and different company, a global company. Incentives pay part of the gas price for buyers, and more fuel efficient SUV's also chip in to pay gas costs. Americans are not out to get off the SUV's just yet, as fuel effficiency standards go up.The investments oil companies are making are expected to provide a payoff in increased production by 2008-2009, and the new oil policy of Saudi Arabia kicks in (see Naimi at CSIS 2006 meeting). The situation eases up for families accustomed to carrying kids around or hauling stuff around. With China's automobile market declining for the fifth month in a row, and trade tensions rising, it now appears that carmakers such as Ford expanded too quickly in the Chinese market. Ford, Peugeot, and Hyundai appear to have poorly times their expansion in China, expanding at the tail end of the Chinese boom just ahead of the new Trump administration's efforts to challenge China's lopsided trade balance.  It has become so bad that this report shows workers at a Peugeot factory in China spending their days washing floors and attending Communist political study sessions at work. At a Ford plant workers shifts are reduced to a couple of days a month. Sales grew 3% in 2017 and declined 2% in the first 11 months of 2018, after increases of 14% in previous years taking the market to 28 million in a dizzying ride as it surpassed the U.S. sales of 17.5 million. Overcapacity is a problem in China with the aggressive expansion. There is capacity to make 43 million cars, but will produce 29 million in 2018, according to PwC, consulting firm. Ford meanwhile put in a new plant in Harbin in 2017, expanding its capacity to 1.6 million a year, but sales peaked at 1.27 million in 2016, and are down 6% in 2017, and 34% in 2018 to about 700,000. While there are no layoffs some workers are making only $220 monthly, forcing them to take second jobs as cab drivers or couriers. Suzuki decided to quit in 2018 exiting China entirely just so it would not pile up losses in what is now a market that is way overblown from the boom years. Electric vehicle production in the pipeline of about 7.5 million vehicles will compound this problem further with 32 new plants planned by 26 firms.   ...

How electric utilities and the oil industry are backing California's fight with the EPA to regulate auto emissions, cutting them by 30% by 2016 for new cars and trucks in the state. Its a fight endorsed by 14 states in the Northeast and Northwest. California sued the EPA, and in effect the Bush Administration which controls the EPA, in federal district court and federal appeals court. THe EPA has taken two years to respond to California's request for a waiver so that it can regulate auto emissions in its state. California's auto emissions rules are part of a broad effort to reduce all emissions in the state by 25% by 2020, including by manufacturing, electric utilities and the oil industry. Utilities and the oil industry share the opinion that all sectors of the economy should be required to take on this responsibility, including the transportation sector. In the past oil companies and the auto industry have been at loggerheads about who is responsible for the worsening dependence of the USA on foreign oil and the worsening impact of the oil consumption on the environment and their advertising campaign have often shifted the blame on each other.
