Why are New York City hotel rooms costing $300 a night? This NYT report says there is a shortage of tourist lodging pushing prices up when 20% of hotel rooms go to asylum seekers and migrants. During 2022 hotels found the program of the city of New York at $185 a night to convert hotels to shelters for asylum seekers as away to remain in business during the pandemic. Since then 130 of 680 hotels in New York City have entered the shelter program. This presented a loss of 16,000 rooms leaving 121,000 rooms inventory for tourists, a shortage of about 3000 rooms as demand picked up after the pandemic.65,000 migrants are housed in hotels, tents and dormitories in New York City, as the city is obligated to find housing for people who need it, costing $10 billion over 3 years.

The State Budget Crisis Task Force is co-chaired by former Fed chairman Paul Volcker and Richard Ravitch, a former lieutenant governor of New York. The Report of the Task Force says rising pension expenses and healthcare costs for public sector employees and Medicaid costs are severely reducing the ability of states in the U.S. to fund essential infrastructure improvements, education for low income students and other services. The report said there were six major threats to the fiscal situation of states- including Medicaid spending, underfunding of retirement, "budgetary gimmicks" to address the short term needs, and uncertain tax revenues. Ravitch told a news conderence: "It will be a hell of a lot more expensive to deal with theses problems in five or ten years than to deal with them now." The report focussed on California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Virginia and Texas. It was funded by the foundation of Blackstone Group co-founder Peter Peterson, and George Soros's Open Society Foundation....

Brian Sack joined the New York Fed in 2009 and became the head of the markets group. In this position he managed the expansion of the Fed's securities portfolio first in the early days of the fianncial crisis, and then under QE 1 and Operation Twist to its current level of $2.6 trillion. He has a PhD. from MIT and has co-authored papers with Fed chairman Ben Bernanke. Sacks is now leaving this position at the Fed.

This editorial in the New York Times is strongly critical of former president Barack Obama for accepting $400,000 in speaking fees from Wall Street for a single speech. It says the news is causing people to question the ideas and words presented by Obama in his books about the dangers of losing sight of the interests of ordinary people. It gives the impression says the NYT, that Obama is cashing in like everybody else, and that his talk was empty. The editorial says the millions raised by Hillary Clinton led to her defeat in the election. Obama is reported to plan a foundation with the work of training a new generation of political leaders. This NYT editorial says it would be better to stay true to vision and purpose, to walk the talk for president Obama, especially now that a recent poll shows two thirds of voters, including about half of Democrats say that the Democratic Party is out of touch with the interests of the American People. By associating this closely with wealthy donors leading Democrats contributed to this. During a period when some of the remarkable achievements of the last fifty years such as the European Union are being called into question, when ordinary working people, young people and older people are struggling, this is all the more a tone deaf approach by politicians. The idea of helping train a new generation of political leaders through a foundation sounds bizarre in this context, and seems to suggest politicians believe there is always a solution through marketing their audacity and money.   ...

Now that congestion pricing plan is halted, the New York Subway system that has suffered from decades of neglect and disinvestment languishes in crisis. The NYT says it is hanging by a thread in this report. The Erie Canal was built in 7 years for $7 million as navigable waterway with locks for elevation of 350 miles from the Hudson River at Albany to Buffalo and Lake Erie. With inflation up, cost of living increase, the $15 per hour wage in high cost of living states such as California and New York does not go very far in tackling cost of living in 2026. Astoundingly 20 states many in the SOuth still follow the $7.25 per hour federal minimum wage that has not changed since 2009. Axios shows the minimum wage by state. In Michigan workers in youth age earn 85% of the minimum wage of $12.80 and hour. As workers lost leverage with the decline of trade unions since the 1990's administrations of Clinton, Bush, Obama, the situation is a difficult one for lower wage workers in many states. The lower wages in retail and hospitality industries also creates downward pressure on all wages which have not kept up till recently in auto and other manufacturing industries. Outshoring increased pressures over the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations and as Democrats failed to do much about outshoring, it took a Republican DJT and Democrat Biden who followed to reverse the trend and create a push for higher wages. This also has failed as inflation surged during 2022-2023 and outshoring created new problems in sourcing parts from overseas in autos and other industries. The middle class is also not much better off and engineers making $90,000 a year are also living from paycheck to paycheck, with less access to housing that has gone up in price and become less affordable. This cost of living surge and the open borders migration pressure on public services led to DJT's reelection in 2025. ...

He may well be the best leader of India after 1950- who set India on the course to modernization and becoming one of the 3 largest economies in the world. India under the leadership of Vajpayee and now Modi is in a position to work in cooperation with the US and Germany, Japan for modernization and rapid economic progress to show the vitality and strength of the parliamentary systems that have evolved from the British model for 500 years since 1500 and the scientific advancement that happened after the Renaissance in Europe after 1600. ...

New York City will distribute 1 million face masks and it will be mandatory to wear masks on mass transit. Hand sanitizer will be provided at stations. Every other seat will be blocked off on buses.

New laws place fines on buildings that do not meet carbon emissions standards. Buildings in New York such as 277 Park Avenue face $1.3 million in fines. It is leased by JP Morgan Chase and is now at 25% vacancy. Chase Bank is building its own tower with zero carbon emissions and will move to this tower when completed. Other similar buildings in NY and across the country face similar fines.

The New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed a civil fraud lawsuit against Ernst & Young LLP. Cuomo wrote in the complaint that "Ernst & Young substantially assisted Lehman Brothers, now bankrupt, to engage in a massive accounting fraud." The suit says Ernst & Young ignored warnigs from Lehman employees and from its own staff about the improper transactions. Lehman shifted $50 billion in assets off its balance sheet to foreign banks at critical financial reporting periods with a promise to buy back the securities at a premium price a few days later. With the cash held in the meantime, Lehman would pay down other debts, appearing to have less debt and give investors a better impression about the firm's financial condition than was really the case. Lehman and Bear Stearns were the most highly leveraged investment banks during the financial crisis of 2008. The unraveling of Lehman led to cracks in the world financial system because of interrelationships in the banking system. By taking this action the New York Attorney General's office is taking an important step to prevent the recurrence of such systemic crises from buildup of excessive leverage in the financial system....
