American journalist Bob Schieffer spent 46 years with CBS. He was host of the news show on CBS "Face the Nation" for 24 years. Schieffer says he made the biggest impression on the American public only in the last 12 years since turning 65. During these 12 years he moderated several presidential debates, put CBS at the highest level of viewership as other leading journalists retired, and published a best selling memoir, "This Just In." Things were not expected to turn out this way. In 2003 Mr. Schieffer found out he had bladder cancer, and he says ever since he saw things differently- everything appeared as a temporary assignment. In 2005 he announced he would retire in 2007, when he was 70. Each year after that CBS persuaded him to stay. He replaced Dan Rather for "CBS Evening News" in 2005, and gave it solid ratings till he stepped down in 2007. Schieffer is the same person he was many years ago for people who remember him from CBS since 1982, as the chief Washington correspondent. Martin Feldstein supports cutting "tax expenditures," -the special purpose deductions such as the deductions for mortgage interest, charitable deductions, state and local government taxes and other such exemptions- as Bowles-Simpson Deficit proposals have recommended. Bowles-Simpson would use this money to reduce tax rates and only $80 billion of this to reduce the deficit. Here Feldstein suggests capping the individual's benefits from such deductions at 2% of adjusted gross income. Research by Feenberg and Feldstein on the use of such a cap shows that this would reduce the federal deficit in 2011 by $262 billion or 1.7% of gross domestic product. The list of deductions used by Feenberg and Feldstein for these figures are: deductions for mortgage interest, state and local income and property taxes, charitable contributions, credits for dependent care, children and certain education costs, and the exclusion of employer payments for health insurance. Sunc a cap would not affect the 46% of taxpayers who use the standard deduction and would induce others to shift to the standard deduction. By doing so this will simplify the tax system and reduce economic inefficiency. Feldstein advises that Congress should include and individual cap on total benefits from tax expenditures in any program to tackle the deficit....

Dell is mired in two touch manufacturing for PC's which is costly especially for the more labor intensive manufacture of notebook computers. It is now planning the sale of all production asssembly factories to contract manufacturers. For Dell a contract manufacturer in Asia puts together the parts for a PC and the its assembled at a Dell plant hence the term two-touch. HP has more than half of its manufacturing done by contract manufacturers and its more cost effective so Dell is caught in a more costly production process which it could do with deskops for bsiness but not viable for notebooks.

The CBO annual report on the budget and economic outlook shows a deficit of $1.1 trillion for the current fiscal year, a decline of $200 billion from the prior year. Health care spending is a key factor driving the deficit. Cost of spending on healthcare programs is expected to double in the next 10 years, increasing by 8% a year and reaching $1.8 trillion in 2022.

The new Social Studies, Civics and English Reading curriculum for K-12 in Texas Schools looks at a broader approach to reading of classics which have been largely bypassed in an erroneous approach to reading focused on whatever is in contemporary trends. The current approach is leading to a generation of children who do not know much about the Nation's history and culture and form of government, about the English language and its prominent American authors. One draft includes books like “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle for kindergartners, “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle for seventh graders and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech for eighth graders. Frederick Douglas and Langston Hughes are also included. It also has passages from the Bible, including a meditation on Love from First Corinthians.  All this is happening as the Nation has a new Test alternative to ACT and SAT called the CLT Classical Learning Test which provides longer reading passages from English and American Literature and history, science, technology, world knowledge, far better than ACT or SAT. ...
