New information shows a crisis is developing in higher education as student debt passes $1 trillion with the unrelenting rise in the cost of college. Higher debt levels is leading to higher droput rates. According to think tank Education Sector, 30 percent of college students taking out loans dropped out of school, compared to 25% ten years ago. And work can be a large factor as students take parttime jobs to lower the loan burden- half of college dropouts attributed dropping out to work, according to a 2009 study by Public Agenda. It also adds another burden to the productive potential of the U.S. economy. The director of the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University, Anthony Carnevale, estimates the cost to the U.S. economy at half a trillion dollars in terms of skills not available for increasing economic output and income lost for dropouts.

Increased hacking of domain names by scraping public directories for information on companies and individuals. A password is hacked or keystrokes detected by diversion to other sites. Once the domain name is stolen, the domain name's users are then transferred to some site in Eastern Europe or Asia. Some small business sites have seen huge sudden drop in users, one with a 80% drop, as a result of this. Result is layoff of employees, loss of revenues, and effort to recover the name. The scam perpetrators hack into the sites, sell information, and try to get ransom for returning the domain name. Small businesses lacking the security are especially vulnerable to new scams.

Ford and GM employ 120,000 workers in Europe and sell roughly 4 million cars there. GM sold nearly a fourth of the 9.37 million cars it made worldwide in Europe in 2007. And 60% of these cars are small cars like theFocus and Fiesta in Europe for Ford and the Corsa and Astra in Europe for GM. The presence of a gas tax may be what makes Europeans choose smaller cars as gasoline is expensive in Europe. What makes them profitable in Europe is they are generally sold with all the features of bigger quality cars and command higher prices so that small does not mean cheap. But is there any reason that given the experience of Americans with gas prices, and a culture of energy conservation among younger and newer customers. apossible gas tax that funds public transportation projects, and the poor state of household finances, that the better appointed smaller cars that are popular in Europe cannot make their way into American homes. A research paper by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows 43% of Americans in 2012 under the age of 25 with student debt, having average debt of $20,326. Compare this with about 25% of young Americans having student debt in 2003, with average debt of $10,649. This is crowding out other borrowing such as buying new homes or cars by younger Americans because of borrower unwillingness to take on more debt and banks unwilling to lend to borrowers who might default.

Leonhardt argues that rationing is rational allocation of limited resources, health care budgets are limited resources even in rich countries like the USA, and if you overpay here you cut somewhere else. Now the cuts that are not noticed he says are in take home pay as employers face increased premiums from insurers. Rationing is taking place all the time with poor health outcomes relative to the cost for poor allocation of resources as survival rate for many diseases are not that much better than other countries. Rationing takes place everyday when patients see doctors only for a few minutes as doctors race to see more patients, and when diseases are not caught early on in the process as doctors do not know their patients well enough. And rationing is taking place as patients simply delay or forego treatments based on the extra cost, or as uninsured get no care. There are so many buzzwords like this thrown around, with doctors, hospitals and insurers and other groups trying to preserve the status quo, even as it is becoming rapidly unaffordable fort the US to be spending so much on health care....

The US with 5% of the world's population has 25% of the world's prisoners. The US has 2.3 million peope behind bars according to the International Center for Prison Studies. China with 4 times the population has 1.6 million people in prison. The US has 751 people in prison per every 100,0000. It varies a lot within the states Louisiana at 1138 per 100,000 and Maine at 273 being the lowest, Minnesota at 300 is more like Sweden at 80 per 100,000 people.Interestingly it shot up in 1975, for a long period from 1925 to 1975 it was about 110 per 100,000. Explanations are given such as the war on drugs but only 500,000 are in prison for drug offences, so its only part of the explanation. tougher sentencing, availability of handguns and higher murder rates, and even the election of judges who respond to public opinion favoring tougher sentencing, are all given as answers. Interestingly Canada's crime rates parallel those seen in the US but the imprisonment rate has been stable for the last 40 years according to one expert Mr. Tonry. He says that english speaking countries have higher prison rates than French and other European peoples. Higher prison rates for black people are known to be the case in English speaking countries but no figures are given here. This is part of the problem....

Guido Westerwelle, foreign minister of Germany, and former head of the Free Democratic party, made another misstep by describing Germany's support for economic sanctions as a key factor in the fall of the Gaddafi regime. He did not credit NATO's military intervention as the main reason. Westerwelle opposed German support for NATO's military intervention and Germay abstained in a UN security council meeting vote to authorize military force in protecting Libyans from Gaddafi's regime. The results of this policy are seen as diminishing Germany's international image, and seen as isolating it from its allies in Europe and NATO. The new head of the FDP, Phillip Rosler came out strongly to credit NATO for the military intervention, saying: "our deep respect and thanks goes to our allies, who decisively thwarted Gaddafi's murderous units." German chancellor Merkel sidestepped the issue by crediting NATO for its leadership. FDP's rank and file supporters believe that voters will hold the party to account for this and other missteps by Westerwelle. Former German foreign minister, and former Green's party leader Joschka Fischer told Der Spiegel magazine: this was "perhaps the biggest foreign policy debacle in Germany's post-war history." ...
