President Biden is setting up a New Deal style American Climate Corps that is a green jobs training program. It will employ 20,000 young people who will build trails, plant trees, help instal solar panels, and do conservation work, and help prevent wildfires. It is modeled on the Civilian Conservation Corps setup by president Franklin Delano Roosevelt as part of the New Deal. The Corps program will work with federal agencies and 10 states that have already setup similar programs-California, Washington, Maine, Utah, Colorado and Michigan, Arizona and North Carolina.

The Lake Dunlap dam was built in the 1920's to generate electricity for rural homes in the state, and is one of six dams on the Guadalupe river. There are 91,815 dams in the US with an average age of 61 years, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers. It would cost $157 billion to repair and build new dams to replace these aging dams.

After inflation drops to 2.3% in the eurozone in December 2024 the British pound rises to 1.21 euros and 1.04 US dollars. The ECB says its decision to cut rates to 3% was a result of inflation forecasts showing a further drop in inflation to 1.9% by 2026. Throughout the period 1850-1960 for 110 years one finds very little immigration of Asians to the US- mostly European selectively in phases after 1900 by steamboat as can be seen at the Smithsonian museum exhibits in Washington DC. Thus the Court is taking up a narrative that was never true. It was only JFK and LBJ who changed this by the 1960's- if one reads JFK and his grasp of the events in Indonesia, India, of Asia in WWII from his experiences as a soldier in the Asia Pacific region- not as the narrative suggests as an extension of civil rights for Black people, but for a deep respect and understanding of Asian people's aspirations that he opened up immigration to the US in the 1960's for Asians. This is why it is a stretch of the imagination for Cecilia Wang to say- Cecilia Wang -"your ancestors could be on the Mayflower or be undocumented immigrants but you and I are exactly the same as US citizens." Even after 60 years of reading the speeches and writing of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, TR and FDR, JFK, of Carl Sandburg's volumes of Lincoln, the poetry of America of Walt Whitman, committing Robert Frost poems to memory, there is more a sense of humility and even greater earnest  desire to learn about this Nation, and of the scientific endeavors of Europe since 1600 that eluded Asia, than making statements about the first voyages and the people who ventured out on the Mayflower. One has to look with awe at the sculptures in Geneva, Switzerland, of these brave people in the 1600's who for religious and other reasons made their way in difficult voyages over the Atlantic to America, much less say were the same as them. It is more about honoring JFK's words in appreciation of his opening for Asia, on thinking more about what you can do for your country than what your country can do for you. ...

Snowden tells the WP's Gellman he feels vindicated by Judge Leon's describing the NSA security surveillance of phone records as "Orwellian" and the president's own panel calling for changes. He says he brought the same issues up for review by his superiors at the NSA. His goal says Snowden was for the public to have a say in the expanding information collection by the NSA, as the normal processes of review by Congress and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court had failed. For Snowden personally this meant making a decision in unknown territory not knowing how the public would respond, and what impelled him to act was the idea that doing something was better than the alternative of doing nothing.He says he considered the fear that the public would be apathetic- as it turns out the public has been anything but apathetic. After 9/11 defense and security officials operated on the basis that complete knowledge of information about U.S. and foreign citizens was needed, this gives the public an opportunity to test that assumption and see if that is itself a problem in a free society and too high a price to pay. Considering that Al Qaeda and other movements in the Middle East are a result of past U.S. support to dictators and autocratic regimes which have turned some parts of Islamist movements into forces hostile to the U.S., changes in U.S. policies to support freely elected governments are a better solution than hyper extensive policing and surveillance- defeating the problem at the source. That process has already been underway in the U.S.-in the media, and with policies supporting freely elected governments encouraging the people in the Middle East to decide their own future. With the change in policies bringing Arab and Muslim opinion on the side of the U.S. that chapter of hostility to the U.S. may be closed and a new chapter opened, making this an opportune time to close the chapter of hyper surveillance and return to surveillance that does not violate U.S. citizens right to privacy. Technology also played a part making such hyper surveillance possible- such as collecting the entire Library of Congress information in less than 15 seconds- and Congress and the Surveillance Court failing to address the issues raised by techonological advances, similiar to the way the S.E.C. and regulatory agencies failed to keep up with the changes in the financial system till after the 2008 financial crisis....

There are more women drivers in the U.S. than men. In 2011 50.5% of licensed drivers were women. This is an increase from the 39.6% figure in 1963, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Part of the reason for this is the decline in young men getting drivers licenses, and the larger share of older drivers with more women in that age group. Even though women still earn less than men the numbers are increasing, with women making 81 cents to every dollar made by men in 2012, increasing from 62 cents in 1979. In educaton levels achieved women are doing better- Labor Dept figures show 30% of women born in the early 1980's with bachelors degrees, and only 22% for men. That suggests their earning prospects will continue to increase. Studies by R.L. Polk show women prefer more fuel efficient cars. A study by RDA Group shows women buying the average new car in 2012 at a price 12% less than the average car bought by men. Only two of the top ten cars purchased by women in 2012 were U.S. brands- the Ford Escape at No.7 and the Chevy Equinox at No. 9. This shows that Ford, GM and Chrysler have more work to do to attract women customers....
