Mr. Trump planned to quarantine New York but faced opposition from the governors of New York and New Jersey, including possible legal challenges. U.S. governors have acted imposing travel restrictions to their states from hotspots in other places in the country, forcing people traveling to self-isolate, stopping vehicles with out of state license plates and asking them to stay away. The U.S. cases have jumped from 100 in early March to 143,000 as of March 28, 2020, and 2514 deaths, according to John Hopkins. New estimates from president Trump and his team of experts are for the peak to be reached by April 15, and recovery gradually taking place by June 1, 2020. Based on the timeline in China shown below the time from the first set of 27 cases by December 15 to March 28 when China's factories were back to work and schools reopened across the country, is a period of 75 days. Based on this president Trump's timeline of June 1 for recovery has some foundation. China quarantined strictly compared to the U.S. yet in the early days it had no warning which the U.S. had in particular from Italy. The Trump administration by extending social distancing and lockdown restrictions till April 30 without a strict quarantine of the East coast areas yet with states outside imposing their own restrictions for outsiders, is doing what other countries such as China, South Korea, have to control this epidemic. The first coronavirus case was reported on November 17, 2019 according to the South China Morning Post, By December 15, the number of cases had reached 15. On December 27 on a single day 180 cases were recorded and the Head of the Respiratory Department at Hubei Provincial Hospital reported this to health authorites in China, according to the South China Morning Post, based on data collected in China.   ...

DW.com says Greenland has some of the largest mineral deposits in world. Greenland is an island in the Arctic region that was first extensively explored by US Admiral Perry in the 1890's. In 1867 it was a planned American acquistion of Seward with the Alaska Purchase. Harry Truman planned acquisition of Greenland in 1947 after the War. The Nazis had planned to use it in the War.  Yet the BBC, Wash Post, NYT, and other media simply ignore this and take what Denmark has to say and present Denmark's view as something thought up at the White House. Clearly Denmark was a colonial power and acquired this territory totally averse to the interests of local population of tribes in the period since 1800. It acquired it in negotiations with colonial powers including Britain, Sweden, and Norway through the Treaty of Kiel in 1800 during the Napoleonic Wars. There is no legal basis for Denmark's colonization of Greenland. Germany and Britain understand this for whom the main interest lies in US being able to protect the eastern seaboard of the US from hostile nations who would also be hostile to Europe. Denmark's role in this is zero and it is totally useless for Denmark. It has less than the size of the NYC police department in Greenland and the population of Greenland would easily fit into a baseball stadium in the US. The US Navy with Adm. Perry discovered the North of Greenland from the southern part by dog sleds for the first time in the 1890's. It is hundreds of times the size of Denmark and covers the eastern seaboard of the US essential to US security since its founding- it is of no value to Denmark as Truman's Commanders in Chief pointed out in 1947, when after Seward in 1867 US moved to acquire it. Climate change and loss of 140 billion tons of ice over decades means it is becoming a navigable waterway- and poses risks for the security of the US requiring the US to take action in the interests of both the US and Europe, on which Denmark has ineptly chosen to misrepresent or obscure the facts as the facts can easily be researched. ...

As Turkey's trade ties with the other countries in the Middle East and Asia increase there is less support for joining the European Union. In 2004 12.5% of Turkey's exports went to the Middle East, today this is up to 20%. This figure is expected to increase after the Arab Spring and new economic opportunities in the region, according to one business group leader. Turkey's exports to Europe in 2010 were about 56%. As Cyprus takes the rotating presidency of the European Union in July 2012, Turkey plans to boycott the presidency and freeze negotiations. In 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus and set up a rival government in the Turkish part of Cyprus. The talks may be abandoned if no progress is made by 2014, according to Turkish officials. Turkish public opinion is also shifting away from favoring joining the EU. Surveys by the German Marshall Fund show 38% of Turks saw membership as a good thing in 2010, compared to 73% in 2004.

French farmers problems with rising costs are leading to protests in Paris and its surrounding highways. France lost about 20% of its farms in the decade 2010 to 2020, about 101,000 farms. Another 200,000 farmers reach retirement age by 2026, what happens to these farms is uncertain given the prevailing environment where farming is seen as a struggle to mmet rising costs and regulations, increase in cost of diesel to meet climate goals. Democracy can be damaged as much from inside by impunity for wrongdoing as it is from outside by failed states and authoritarian states. President Biden's initiative in getting together countries was to think of new initiatives as the lessons for democracy have to be relearned by every new generation anew.  The appointment of Mr. Gurbir Grewal can only be seen in this light as Mr. Biden's initiative for democratic processes that work for families and American workers. Gurbir Grewal who takes the top job of making the correction America needs is straightforward about malefactors in finance and banking- "We can't arrest them. We can get them out of the industry." Gurbir Grewal is the the new director of the SEC's enforcement program after serving in difficult jobs in New Jersey and NY state, first as prosecutor and then as Attorney General of New Jersey.  Democracy can be shattered as much by hate crimes as by financial crimes. Either way families and working class families in the US are affected, as are minorities and the less well off sections of the community affecting the credibility of the commitment of the well off to honest governance and to fairness. This credibility was severely damaged in the 2009 financial crisis and the situation continues to this day. To understand first hand by being in the shoes of families and workers, minorities and the less well off, gives Gurbir Grewal the courage to take on this job. He told the New York City Bar Association that Americans have grown cynical about how business and government agencies interact- "the perception that we, the regulators, are failing to hold them appropriately accountable, or worse still, the belief by some that there are two sets of rules."  Mr. Biden can see that if anything can make democratic processes lose even more credibility with the people is when new administrations fail to act. It shows about 100,000 school children are suffering in the UK from lack of proper lunches because low income parents cannot afford it and are coming short. It says school teachers are shocked at the pitiful packed lunches children are bringing to school. The Liberal Democrats education spokesperson says the Tory government is snatching school lunches from children by stealth, as it has neglected to increase the limit on household earnings from 7400 pounds to 8575 pounds where it would be if increased for inflation. That would have made 110,000 more children eligible. This appalling and callous situation is the front page story in The Guardian today.

Swiss shareholder activist Ethos Foundation called for personnel changes at UBS. Dominique Biedermann, head of Ethos called for the replacement of Kaspar Villiger and Carsten Kengeter, who head UBS investment bank. Biedermann said UBS should leave investment banking and former Deuthche Bundesbank President, Axel Weber, should join UBS as chairman earlier than the planned 2013 date. He suggested Hugo Baenziger, current chief risk officer at Deutsche Bank, rather than interim CEO Sergio Ermotti, who is an investment banker, as the right person for the CEO position at UBS.
