Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post cites the Pew poll of September 3-7, 2015, on the Iran nuclear deal of July 2015, showing increase in skepticism about the deal's provisions by people who are informed to some extent (a little or a lot) about its details- 57% opposing to 27% supporting. About 30% have no opinion it appears because the issue of this magnitude involving nuclear weapons proliferation has become politicized when it should be examined only on its merits, where public opinion would be shaped by the details of the deal itself, not who has negotiated it. The Pew Research Center poll shows 21% support the agreement negotiated with Iran, 49% disapprove, 30% offer no opinion. This compares with a poll taken 6 weeks before in July 2015 showing 33% supporting it and 45% opposing it. ...

Les Moonves, head of Viacom's CBS television network, was an actor in a television show from the seventies called "The Six Million Dollar Man." He moved later to Warner Brothers and headed the studio which developed hits such as "ER" and "Friends" during his period at the studio. Moonves retains the instincts from this earlier period as he helped develop programming that pushed CBS into first place among television networks, beating Disney's ABC, Comcast Corp.'s NBC, and News Corp.'s Fox. He joined CBS in 1995, when CBS was in last place of the three U.S. television networks. At CBS he pushed for developing shows at the network studio level. In 2000 he came up with "Survivor"- the first reality programming, and the police investigatory show "CSI." CBS was hit hard during 2007-2009 as the ad market fell sharply and net income fell 82%, the stock losing 82% of its value. Moonves has diversified away from dependence on ads with revenues from syndication sales of televisions shows such as "CSI," and licensing to Netflix of old shows such as "I Love Lucy." Major problems facing CBS and the other television networks is the decline in the number of people watching television, with competition from streaming online video, digital recorders, and on-demand viewing. Even though CBS has the most viewers in prime time in the U.S., 11.5 million viewers, this is seeing sharp declines. The market has gone from 16 milllion to a 10 million rate in October 2008, if it drops to 8 million in 2009, it would require the companies to shrink by 50% as a rough guess, and the union contracts just negotiated would be totally inappropriate for the new market and financial conditions. Getting rid of those union contracts could only be done in a bankruptcy filing, as in bankruptcy everything would have to be done from scratch. Whereas in a bailout the unions would simply refuse to cooperate as they have done in the past. This is also what readers are saying when they say let the market economy work. A look at the reader comments on similar articles in the Washington Post and the WSJ also show an overwhelming number of readers not favoring taxpayer money for automakers without serious changes, and bringing a completely new management and board to get things off to a fresh start, with no legacy from the past. ...

Walgreens is changing its growth model to add the business of Health and Wellness buying two companies I-trax Inc. and Whole Health Management which run 350 health centres at corporate offices. Pharmacies will be added to these centres. Its targeting 7600 office sites with 1000 or more employees that could use a health-care center. It would do what nothing else could do for the nation's health on a massive scale which is why it is the right thing to put much of our focus on, to create a culture that put much importance on the quality and kinds of food, on artificial vs natural, on food grown in good environments, on local vs shipped long distances, on processing vs not processing, all the time thinking of one's own health and what it will do for the quality of life we live. Just a fraction of the savings in medical care would pay for education and parks, green areas in neighborhoods, public health services, high levels of sanitation, leading to better well being that leads to more productive and intelligent citizens. Stringer has shed most of the non core businesses including the life insurance unit and an online bank spun off 2 weeks ago for $3 billion in an IPO, and selling some semiconductor operations to Toshiba for $800 million last week. Also gone is Aibo, the robot dog. The battery overheating recalls charges are also behind Sony. And the Sony movie studio is making profits with popular movies. These are not reflected in the announced results for 3rd quarter 2007. About $50 billion of Sony's $70 billion in worldwide sales are from electronics. Sony has tieup with Samsung in tv's and this has helped it improve results in its tv business and collaborate to combine resources where needed. Its also investing in technology with a new type of tv screen 0.12 inches thick , enabled by an organic light emitting diode display.
