This report in the NYT says Hillary Clinton has studied policy briefings, academic papers and taken advice from 200 policy experts, including experts from Bill Clinton's administration such as Alan Blinder, all in an effort to define her own policy positions on issues facing the U.S. This happens at a time different from the period of slow growth when Bill Clinton ran against George H.W. Bush. Since then middle class families face the added problems of not being able to keep up with the rising cost of college education, health care, child care, low interest rates on savings and volatile markets dampening savings growth. For working class Americans in the middle class during Bill Clinton's time in office the problems take the shape of a sharp decline in the manufacturing wages that once supported a middle class life in industrial states of the midwestern U.S., with global competition doing the damage, and few solutions available except improving technology and technical skill of the workforce to compete in higher end products. Consider the points made by Janet Yellen, the Fed chairwoman at a Boston Fed conference in Oct. 2014- Fed information for 2013 showing the average net worth of the lower half of American families representing 62 million households is $11,000. Only this conceals the situation facing one fourth of these families who have zero wealth or negative net worth, and a significant fraction owing more on their homes than they are worth. Hillary Clinton told a audience at the New School in Greenwich Village in New York, this is the defining economic challenge of our time. " We must raise incomes for hard-working Americans so they can afford a middle class life. This will be my mission from the first day I'm president to the last."...

Sony has lost its focus, it is in so many lines of business, that its brand identity has been lost. Especially in Japan where it is in cosmetics, massage, mailorder shopping club, insurance, finance, robots etc. It has 1000 subsidiaries and affiliates worldwide, of which a third are unrelated to its core electronics business. How does this hurt? It hurts because management is distracted, and when top management is distracted then its not focussing on customers, changing business trends, creativity in its business pioneering new products. In a big company this problem is just magnified by the bureaucracy that develops. Problems similiar to the ones faced by IBM and General Motors. The analysts and Howard Stringer talk about restoring the Sony premium. What is a premium, its not just the brand, its the innovation or something special behind the brand that enables it to command the premium. Stringer probably understands that its the innovative edge that Sony as lost. See the other piece "Howard Stringer, Sony's Road Warrior" by Siklos and Fackler in the Sunday NYT, May 30, 2006 with Stringer shown in a large picture imagining him as a Sumo wrestler. An unforgettable picture. In that piece it becomes clear that Stringer is keenly aware about Sony's and Japan's weakness in software which is increasingly driving success in products when combined innovatively with new bold concepts. He says there that Sony takes great pride in its hardware, and this is true of Japanese creative spirit in innovative and miniature gadgetry, but its capabilities in software are very modest. As one action step Stringer has hired Tim Schaaf , a senior Apple executive to lead that effort at Sony. The other part, getting the focus back by focussing on customers of electronic products is evident in this piece. Ryoji Chubachi, head of electronics and co-head of Sony with Stringer, regularly visits large retailers to offer incentives for making Sony products more visible, something the prior management failed to do. The prior management failed to focus on customers, and thought it beneath their highflying ways. One of the decisions by Chubachi in TV's is to price HDTV sets close to the price of Panasonic, Samsung and Sharp at large retailers in Japan. This makes sense to gain market leader status, as it shows Sony is living in the real world and taking decisions appropriate and relevant to a premium free environment in television sets. You a manufacturer cannot imagine a premium, a premium is a perception in the minds of customers and most likely reflects a perception of uniqueness, creativity, fashion and some other attribute, which can include engineering. Sony's philosophy has stated in Akio Morita's book "Made in Japan", was to be a pioneer, to walk the untrodden ways, break new ground. One aspect of this in comparison to Matsushita, Sharp and other competitors, was going to be its individuality, something Morita borrowed from his days in the US, because it is typically American and sort of unJapanese in a way. Though this is a generalization and many American companies merely follow and some Japanese companies have their own way of doing things even if it is thought of as being very Japanese like, witness Toyota in its Aichi prefecture surroundings. In this light the surveys show Sony significantly deteriorating in "conspicuous individuality." The New York Times cites a survey from BP Nikkei Consulting in Tokyo that the number of consumers saying that Sony showed "conspicuous individuality dropped to about 25% from about 40% the year before. ...

HP's Apotheker emphasized in an earnings call "the tablet effect is real and sales of the TouchPad are not meeting our expectations. The velocity of change in the personal device marketplace continues to increase as the competitive landscape is growing increasingly more complex especially around the personal computing area." By the tablet effect Apotheker means the Apple iPad. The tablet is becoming popular but not the other tablets from Samsung, HP and other makers. It is the iPad that is the product customers turn to and the tablets of competitors are not accepted as a substitute. As a result CEO Apotheker plans to exit the tablet and PC business.

They are more optimistic and impatient about things so companies have to move quickly to change things to retain talent. The other major change is the number of young women that are joining. Nasscom the software industry association in India says that last year this was 35% and will rise to 45% by 2010. This is amazing rise considering that it started from very low numbers and these young women are more vocal than the men. Microsoft shares were up 7% after the announcement about the departure of Steve Ballmer from the CEO position. Steve Ballmer became president in 1998 to run Microsoft's operations. He was a college buddy of Microsoft founder Bill Gates at Harvard. Ballmer graduated from Harvard with a degree in mathematics and economics and worked for 2 years at P&G before Gates persuaded him to join him at Microsoft. For decades the duo of Gates and Ballmer ran the company till Ballmer was made CEO in 2000. Ballmer completes three decades at Microsoft. During most of this period Ballmer focussed on protecting the existing franchise of Windows operating systems software and the Office suite sold on all PC's except Apple Macs. Missteps include Windows Vista, which was followed by the more successful Windows 7. Windows 8 has failed to make a significant dent in the market. A poor decision in retrospect to acquire Yahoo for about $44 billion did not happen, as Yahoo did not pursue discussions. The efforts in smartphones with Nokia and the Surface tablet have failed to produce results. Under Ballmer Microsoft only gradually shifted to cloud computing. The departure of Ballmer comes as a major reorganization was underway in 2013, and the company was shifting its strategy to become a provider of devices and services in place of its main role making software sales for PC's....
