As CEO of Khatam Construction Base, 50 year old Saeed Mohammed plans to stabilize the economy and soften the harsh effects of the sanctions of the Trump administration on Iran. He plans to work with other private companies inside Iran to shore up the Iranian economy till the sanctions regime and the differences with the U.S. are settled. ...

Apple gets 19% of its sales in China with a manufacturing base that includes 1 million people employed in one Chinese city. In an effort to promote Make in China China is giving Huawei more room to compete with Apple. Huawei is bringing out a new 5G phone as an alternative and has banned use of Aplle iphones in government agencies. This means about 56 million people will have to turn to locally made products. China presents this move as an effort to protect data and cybersecurity. Yet Apple has a share price increase of 46% this year even in an environment in which US and China are restricting the export of key technologies (by US) or critical materials for electric cars (by China). Apple's responses to this have been slow preferring to keep its supply chain the way it is in a strategy based on the short run, with some minor shift to India and Vietnam.

In efforts to get Iran to end its uranium enrichment program a package of incentives includes full involvement in Iran's oil and gas industry, and full integration into organizations like the WTO. It includes offering state of the art light water reactor technologies for electricity generation, and a substantive package of nuclear R&D cooperation. This is a set of terms offered by the US and European partners as a combination and presented to Iran by the EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana. Robert Einhorn, a proliferation expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argues that the main issues for Iran are prestige and security. California, New York and Washington are  three states, with 30 other cities in the U.S., and 100 large businesses, forming the U.S. Climate Alliance, saying they will  follow the Paris agreement on climate change. Former Mayor Bloomberg of New York City is organizing the effort, and he says in the U.S. it is cities, states and businesses that actually do the work of reducing emissions, not the federal government. Bloomberg said: "The fact of the matter is Americans don't need Washington to meet our Paris commitment." Governor Jerry Brown of California says the response will be for California and other states to set even bolder standards for reducing emissions.

The intelligence community in the U.S. and the defense department supported strong action on the Russia spy issue, overcoming president Trump's early reluctance to take action. Three options were presented to the president and he chose the middle option, which offered flexibility yet also sent a strong message. The action taken expelled 60 Russian spies and closed the Russian consulate in Seattle. Russia responded by closing the U.S. consulate in St Petersburg. This is the first time that the U.S. and its allies Germay and Britain, France have acted decisively and in coordination in response to Russian moves. Germany is also moving towards stronger action.

Climate change study from Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany published in Nature magazine retracted in December 2025. The study is an example of how such research when not done right can misrepresent situations leading to policy errors. Policy error under such misrepresentation can lead to errors such as a policy that excludes adjustments and a dual response to climate change and cost of living crisis attacking both on two fronts necessary today so soon after a disastrous pandemic and people living in scarcity not able to meet heating bills. What happened is that the study made predictions for 2100- which is impossible to do. Studied 1600 regions in the world. Showed decline of economic output by 62% in 2100. Did not mention that excluding Uzbekistan would make the reduction in growth 23%. It shows how overzealous work in one direction or the other can actually hurt the fight to address climate change and also tackle everday concerns like cost of living crisis. Recent reports in WSJ show how the approach of single focus has hurt economic growth in Germany and hobbled its industries. Other reports show how deprived and less deprived areas in the UK (also in the US) sit by side showing how decades of neglect of manufacturing and outshoring of factories have destroyed jobs and destroyed communities across Europe and the US, making them open to scourge such as fentanyl in the Nation's neighborhoods, and creating a climate of despair that feeds into other fears. Such as the fears of the surge of illegal migration promoted by traffickers and the influx of drug trafficking gangs in the Nation's neighborhoods. Such reports are then used by the World Bank and the Congressional Budget Office and central banks of 90 counties in the coalition Network for Greening of the Financial System, leading to distortions in policy actions, destroying the social consensus needed among wide sectors of the population in democracies in the EU and US and worldwide to address climate change and cost of living crises.  Leonie Wenz, from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany says-“We broadly agree with the issues raised, and have made corrections to the underlying economic data and to our methodology to address them. Ukraine president Poroshenko tells a news conference in Kiev in September 2014 - "the doors of the E.U. are open to us; I am absolutely convinced of this. Events in Kiev and Brussels gave us a firm hope, a belief, that we will soon get the prospect of E.U. membership." Poroshenko plans to repeal a 2010 law barring Ukraine from membership in any military or political alliance, so that it can apply to join NATO. WSJ's Fidler describes the views of Victor Ruhe, a former German defense minister, on the Ukraine crisis and the EU's response. The EU's position for relations with Ukraine comes under criticism for being technocratic as in earler trade and aid negotiations, and not addressing the problems which Ukraine faces. This requires closer cooperation from the EU, and some costs the EU has been unwilling to assume. Ruhe says the best response for the EU is to turn Ukraine into a European success story. This means taking on the effort to gradually transform the corrupt and inefficient political and economic system, something the EU did over many years in the Balkans. EU leaders have signed an agreement with Ukraine's new government on political dialogue and security cooperation. Critical parts of the agreement for trade, law enforcement, anticorruption actions, and macroeconomics changes, will be signed after a new government is elected in May 2014 elections. The EU is in this for the long haul as political support will be needed for a new generation of politicians....

EU's Leyen also visits China at this time.  The relations between the US and European business with China expanded for two decades between 2000-2020. All three regions are heavily invested in each other. Decoupling is a gradual process and China sees the EU as an access point for technology and investment. The US has not decoupled from China even after moves in semiconductors and electric vehicles were made by president Biden. Apple and other American companies are heavily invested in China. The US and the EU are committed to building new supply chains. Their policies are intended to do this in a way that reduces the effect on their economies. The European Union depended on the US for its response to the Russian invasion and to protect freedom in Europe through NATO. By 2024 the European Union policies will be integrated with policy of the US. China is also trying to reduce the effect on its economy by decoupling in a way that maintains growth. ...

Russian president Putin may have exacerbated the very thing he feared- a deepening demographic crisis in Russia. This report in the Financial Times says excess mortality was already one of the highest from the coronavirus- about 1 million compared to official figures of 360,000. During the 1990's Russia had gone through a demographic decline with fewer births after the fall of the Soviet Union and unstable conditions in the economy.  During the pandemic there was outward migration from Russia as a result of people wanting access to vaccines other than the local vaccine, says FT.  In an interview last November Mr. Putin talked about the dangers to Russian statehood and to the economy from a drop in births and falling population. The war has worsened this situation as the FT says about 70,000 highly educated people left the country in March and another 70,000 are expected to leave in April. The response of Europe and the US to the Ukraine invasion with moves that affect the Russian economy could lead to drop in jobs and living standards that lead to a further drop in births, says FT. This may be a more serious way in which Mr. Putin may have neglected to consider Russia's own long term interests in invading its neighbor.   ...

WIth China reluctant to make concessions on agricultural imports at a recent Shanghai meeting of Mr. Lighthizer with Chinese trade representatives, the trade dispute with China has escalated. Mr. Lighthizer had little to show Mr. Trump at a meeting in the WHite House. After a 2 hour meeting Mr. Trump told his advisers that his patience was wearing thin. His response on what the U.S. should do- "tariffs." A tweet was prepared saying U.S. would place import duties of 10% on imports of additional $300 billion in Chinese goods. China responded by lowering its currency value to 7 to the dollar to offset the import duties. China also said it was suspending all agricultural imports of U.S. farm products. The U.S. designating China as a currency manipulator.  The situation today is that there is a level of mistrust between president Xi and his advisers and Mr. Trump and his team. The situation has taken a new turn with China saying the U.S. is supporting protests in Hong Kong. President Trump has stated China is waiting it out to deal with a new administration in Washington. Both sides do not see any solutions till after the U.S. elections in 2020. For China there is also the upcoming 70th anniversary of the People's Republic. ...

David Reilly says the Fed's response to the large volatility in the stock market after the credit downgrade of the U.S. to AA+ makes sense. The Fed's Open Market Committee voted 7-3 on August 9, 2011, to keep interest rates exceptionally low till mid-2013. With credit markets working and the financial system having sufficient liquidity the Fed did not need to take drastic action. Coming only a short period after the end of QE II, a QE III could be seen as an over-reaction. Another reason for the Fed's action- more pressure was needed for the U.S. government and Congress to shoulder responsibility for the economy. In an earlier statement the Fed had pointed out that the Fed by itself can only do so much and this is consistent with that thinking. There are important headwinds from housing, large consumer debt, deficits, and high unemployment that the Fed alluded to in that statement that will take time to reverse with policy action on several fronts over a longer period. In the speech made on June 6, 2011, U.S. Federal Reserve chairman, Ben Bernanke, said "monetary policy cannot be a panacea."...

Lee, Nicholas and Harris of the WSJ describe the responses being considered by president Obama to Russia's hacking of DNC, and other cyberattacks during the U.S. presidential election. Obama said the goal will be "to send a clear message to Russia or others not to do this to us because we can do stuff to you." He said some of this would be done publicly and other things would be done where the Russians know but not everybody else. Mr. McFaul, a former ambassador to Russia, is cited here saying that declassification of intelligence by president Obama in the remaining weeks in office is needed so that all ambiguity about Russian involvement is removed. Elections are coming up in Germany and France in 2017 and both president Obama and the Republican Congress leadership see the need to prevent any further cyberattacks on the U.S. or Western Europe.

In open ended responses they say want to check in on the emotions of their children to see how they are.  About one third of mothers say parenting is a lot harder than expected. parents today worry about the mental health of their children, about anxiety and depression. Mothers also found competing pull from work and careers which made it a lot harder. During Covid many mothers simply focused on the children and gave up work to do this. Economic anxieties are also present for today's parents who see the financial independence of their children and finding careers they enjoy as more important than starting families of their own. ...

Comments in the WSJ on the Trump - Putin meeting in Helsinki, and what the U.S. president should watch for in conversations and negotiations.  It says Mr. Putin's top priority is to shore up his prestige at home, to enhance his political standing. It says Mr. Trump is intent on showing the two countries can get along well but is skeptical of Mr. Putin's intentions on arms control and other issues. The efforts to increase the discord between the European Union and the U.S. are seen by the WSJ as Mr.Putin's effort to erode the will of the West to add to its capabilities. That any American president has to be wary of this effort especially in light of recent events.   From Mr. Putin's point of view the Russian economy is now in much better shape than when the "liberals" were running the country with a collapse of the Russian currency. The need to restore Russian prestige. That the expansion of the EUropean Union and NATO to the borders of Russia, and the situation in first Georgia and then Ukraine, required Russia to respond to protect its defense from foreign threats.This led to wars and intervention in Georgia and then Ukraine as part of Russian policy in response to advances of the West to its borders, and support of proxy governments in the Middle East. The response to economic sanctions was to turn to influence elections in the U.S. and Europe and the U.S. to soften sanctions. On the issue of sanctions this has not happened and the goal of Russia is to mitigate the effect of sanctions. ...

Merkel and Germans see it differently, with the collapse of the Prussian military state and Czarist Russia, and the collapse of Nazis and the Soviet Union, in succession, Germany is fully committed to a new view of relations between states in Europe based on democratic processes, respecting the views of people in Kiev to decide their own future. This reflects a new mood in Europe with increased funding for Deutsche Welle, Germany's broadcasting service to the world, in response to increased broadcasting by Russia Today, Russia's news service....

The figure 50 means that the same number of companies are saying orders are improving as ones that are saying it is not improving.
