More than 600,00 people in Hong Kong are expected to use their colonial era British National Overseas (BNO) status to seek the pathway to citizenship offered by the British government. The advocacy group HKB Hongkongers in Britain surveyed the city's residents hoping to take advantage of the program that starts in January 2021. The Home Office had expected this to be about 500,000 over 3 years. About 80% of those surveyed want to emigrate in 2 years, faster than expected. About 75% of them have university degrees and earn well above the city's average, so that they can contribute to the British economy. About 75% plan to travel with children. Only half have friends in the UK and few have family there. Compared to the influx of migrants into Germany this is likely to bring a fresh infusion of talent into the UK economy at a time when Britain is embarking on building trade with countries around the world after leaving the European Union. Germany had language classes and many problems to integrate migrants from Africa. There is no language barrier and cultural issues are also for the most part absent. The technical skills of Hongkongers with BNO status could add to the British economy in many unanticipated ways.   ...

Lubeck surrounded by two branches of the Trave river like an island. In the Middle Ages trade made Lubeck rich and there are many buildings from that period. On October 28 France reported 36,000 daily coronavirus cases. French president Macron announced a new lockdown starting October 30 that last till December 1.  Under this second lockdown people can leave home only to go to work, to go to school, to give assistance to loved ones, for essential shopping and for 1 hour of physical exercize. People will have to show documentation when leaving home. Travel between regions is banned. Bars and restaurants and nonessential businesses will be closed. Universities and higher education will be done online. Schools will remain open, essential businesses will remain open. Most public services will be open. Factories, farms and construction sites can continue to operate. There will be extensive economic support for business and people. Small businesses will have access to 10,000 euros per month of assistance, employees get short term work assistance, and people having trouble with rent receive assistance. Stephen Bannon the controversial adviser to president Trump is removed from the National Security Council cabinet level principals committee at the insistence of the National Security Adviser to president Trump, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster. In addition the chairman of the Joint CHiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence, were added back to the principals committee of NSC, and the earlier decision to have them as occasional participants was seen as a serious mistake, with Mr. Trump having wanting to change this much earlier. The reversal of the Bannon appointment brings the NSC to its normal membership.This report in the NYT refers to the large role played by Mr. Bannon in the early days with Bannon pushing for the first travel ban that was struck down in the courts, and for the ultimatum in negotiations with the Freedom Caucus that worsened relations with Republicans in Congress. India faced a wave from the new variant's higher rate of infectious spread. leading to a sudden surge in May 2021 to 400,000 daily cases before it was brought down by June 1 to about 100,000 The number of hospitalizations in such a wave is estimated to be higher in UK than the previous waves, requiring the government to be more vigilant today. Restrictions on travel from Portugal are being put in place in UK as a precaution. With a shortage of nurses and healthcare workers, some hospitals are dropping the vaccine mandate for healthcare workers. Shortages existed before the pandemic. The burnout for healthcare workers led to people dropping out. The lure of high pay has also led to nurses to travel to hot spots further crimping supply of workers. Recently workers who do not want ot get vaccinated have quit the industry or lost their jobs, some have left for facilities that do not follow the vaccine requirement. CDC estimates 30% of healthcare workers at 2000 hospitals in the US are unvaccinated as of September 2021. The Biden vaccine mandate would be effective for second shots by Jan. 4. A federal judge in Louisiana has ruled in Nov. questioning the president's authority for a vaccine mandate. Following that ruling HCA, AdventHealth, Tenet, Cleveland Clinic are among the hospital chains reversing earlier decisions for vaccine mandate. Other hospital chains in California Kaiser Permanante and in New York Northwell Health have kept the vaccine mandate. Kaiser had 98% staff vaccinated, with a similar situation at Northwell. Kaiser has 210,000 employees and Northwell 77,000. Utah Mountain also has 98% vaccinated.  Research on vaccine mandates suggests them to be effective. U Penn psychology research shows people are more likely to get encouraged to get vaccine than discouraged with a vaccine mandate not vaccinated working in healthcare in September will shrink considerably by January. ...

France's high speed train network SNCF and its new trains TGV m are the focus of French Connections series in FR24. It is a great success for France as it connects 230 cities across France and decentralizes the country making remote areas reachable in hours. 770 kms Paris Marseille is covered in 3 hours. It has transported about 3 billion passengers since its founding in 1981 under Francois Mitterand. 122 million people traveled on TGV trains in 2023, and this is increasing by 20% a year. The trains travel at 350 kilometers an hour and are capable of over 500 kms per hour. For countries like India this is very useful to know as the first bullet trains based on Japanese technology are being built for route Bombay- Ahmedabad- Jaipur- Delhi. It shows that if it worked so well in France it can work well in the US or India. In India it could transport many times the 122 million in France and connect remote regions exceeding 1000 kms. Madras Srinagar is 3000 kms or 1900 miles. Imagine this being done in 7 hours at 400 kms per hour. It would really decentralize India. Same for the US for Austin Texas to Boston Massachusetts 1600 miles in 7 hours. It would better integrate communities in the US that are far apart socially.   ...

He studied music and humanities in Bosseto, and moved back to his farm in Sant'Agata to write some of his famous operas. NYT's Tommasini travels to Verdi's Italian homeland to trace Verdi's roots in the Italian countryside. For most of his life Verdi lived there even as his classical music operas were performed all over European cities. Many of these operas showed the same longing for home as in "Nabucco." On government documents Verdi showed his occupation as "agricultore" or farmer. After ridiculous objections by censors or inept impresarios Verdi would say he was ready to dig up the fields and return to farming in the countryside near Parma.

Action United Airlines is taking after the episode of bumping passengers on a flight to Louisville caused public protest in media with live pictures, include offering more financial incentives to passengers to vacate seats on overbooked flights, and setting up new rules for handling such situations. Upto $10,000 will be offered to passengers in travel vouchers. Only safety and security would be considerations once passengers are already on the plane. Other airlines are also taking these steps- Delta has set $9950 as the amount maximum to be offered to passengers as vouchers. Other steps United is taking are special call center for overbooking, and reducing number of overbooked flights, offering $1500 no questions asked for lost baggage. United's Board has also acted by not promoting Mr Munoz, the CEO to chairman, and by making it essential that executives show meaningful improvements in customer experience to get incentive compensation. These steps are a result of the report that looked into the failure at United in bumping passengers who were already seated made by the airline. ...

The usage of long distance and short distance passenger trains in Germany has dropped to 15%. Yet Deutsche Bahn is keeping the trains running on schedule with 65% of short distance and 75% of long distance trains running on schedule so that the service is available for essential workers who need it. This is similar to weekend schedule. Deutsch Bahn says it is "stability" that is its motto, and that "whoever works in systematically relevant professions, and is dependent on rail travel should be able to do so without drawbacks." The government is the owner of Deutsche Bahn and is likely to provide financial support for Deutsche Bahn to keep the trains running.  Passenger trains are being used to transport whatever needs to be transported including groceries such as pastry wares, flour, and toilet paper. James Stewart of the NYT describes the remarkable turnaround at Best Buy executed by Hubert Joly, a graduate of the French Etudes de Politiques in Paris and former CEO of Swedish hotel and travel company Carlson. He did this by carefully analyzing the areas where Best Buy was falling short and not delivering for customers a winning proposition. Statistics showed Best Buy had fallen behind on price. One survey showed only 23% of respondents found Best Buy prices were lowest, compared to 71% for Wal-Mart, 56% for Amazon, and 38% for Target. That Wal-Mart and Target are able to hold their own- in the case of Target with 38% along with some other advantages of customer targeting- against showrooming and internet retailers such as Amazon, and the 56% for Amazon which showed Amazon was itself not a price leader, gave Jolly insights into the strategy to pursue. Jolly took out costs elsewhere and made Best Buy the place where the shopper would get the lowest price and much more in terms of convenience, service and advice. The strategy has worked but Jolly is not complacent saying that in this business your success is only as good as your last call. Best Buy's stock is up 240% and is one of the best three stocks of 2013....

Marchionne's constant travel and long hours, reported continuous smoking with unhealthy work and health habits took its toll. It set the wrong role model at the time for workers of Stellantis Chrysler and for business and the younger generation even as it received favorable reporting in the Harvard Business Review and other places. The same can be seen with Elon Musk with such reporting giving a glamorous image and much hype, yet as the Wall Street Journal in its reporting shows setting the wrong role model for business and the younger generation and the renewed future of America. ...

October 1 is a national holiday in China  and the 75th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China in 1949. Youth and students in China travel across the country to visit historic sites in the Chinese Revolution in what is called Red Tourism. The perceptions of young people and students on Mao in 2024 is shown in this video in FR24. This is how China wants to remember its past- a century of conflict with European powers and the British Empire after European Powers tried to breakup China following the Opium Wars in the 1850's. This was followed by the Japanese Empire staking its claims over parts of northern China in 1900-1945, and the period in which the US under General Joe Stilwell struggled with the dilemma of China knowing the corruption and failure of leaders to modernize China.  Then followed the decades when hunger and inadequate healthcare was banished from China, yet the industrial revolution that happened in western Europe and the US was elusive. Efforts in the 1960's to do this failed. Only when China showed the spirit of humility to work with Europeans and Americans and the Japanese and opened up its thinking to adopt markets in its own context of state run operations was the industrial revolution accomplished and modernization made to happen in the 1990's onwards. Three decades of rapid industrialization transformed an ancient nation in the heart of Asia. ...

US Airways has the weakest hub network of the old carriers. With continued problems for air travel from the poor economy the airline is estimated by analyst reports to lose $600 million in 2009, this on top of $!.5 billion in prior years.
