50 years from 1975 and the passing away of the 40 year Franco era, and 44 years from 1981 and joining the European Economic Community Spain is still finding its way. This report from Spain in The Times of London looks at the period before 1975 when Spanish politicians of every party came together to support the transition to democracy and becoming part of the European Union. He looks with dismay at the fractious nature of today's politics and the frequent name calling, Socialists under Sanchez and the Partido Popular, Vox party, Podemos, failing to agree on how to handle the Catalonian independence movement. Those who supported autonomy for Catalonia and the Basque region in 1975 did this not as a pathway to the breakup of Spain, but to give room for regional aspirations and difference in language and traditions within the federal union of Spain. Much of this was forgotten in the politics of Arturo Mas and other politicians from Catalonia. Catalonia is now run by the Socialist party, elsewhere in Spain  the Vox party and Partido Popular in Andalusia and the Madrid region remain popular. The financial debt and housing crisis in Spain, the pandemic and other economic problems have affected Spain similar to the rest of Europe, creating problems in the economy which only now have been overcome.  ...

A couple was released after being held by police for 36 hours. There were public sightings of a drone but no real proof.

Boris Johnson wins the race to lead the Conservative Party and become the next prime minister of Britain. Several ministers resigned underlining the problem he faces lacking support from the Conservative party members who do not support exit from the European Union without some deal or arrangement with the EU. He will lead a minority government that could fall with the loss of support from within the Conservative Party itself. Boris Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt by 92,153 votes to 46,656. He now has a margin of only three votes with the help of the Unionist Party of Northern Ireland and faltering support from members of the Conservative Party who see Boris Johnson's idea of simply leaving the EU on October 31st deal or no deal as problematic.

Christie's London based head of wine, David Elswood, says what he has seen in the last year from Chinese buyers is people paying virtually any price for wine. He calls this uncontrolled spending. Value of wine auctions reached $120 million in 2010, double the $64 million in 2009. Auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's say their auctions of wine in Hong Kong will raise more than sales in London and New York combined. Sales broke auction records at an Oct 29 auction, when three bottles of Chateau Lafite's 1869 vintage each sold for a record $230,000. The number of billionaires in China jumped by 60% in 2010 and this is inflating the bubble in wine. Chinese collectors now hold one in 4 bottles of vintage wine globally, according to Crown Wine Cellars. This company stores HK$1 billion of wine in a network of converted ammunition bunkers in Hong Kong.

Her father was  elected as Minister President of Lower Saxony province after working at EU in Brussels. Leyen went to secondary school in Brussels. Studying economics at London School of Economics before shifting to medicine, getting her degree in 1991. She followed her husband to Stanford University, and after her return to Hanover in 1996 was elected to the state parliament in Lower Saxony in 2003. She joined Merkel's cabinet as Minister of Youth and Family Affairs in 2005, deputy leader of CDU in 2010 and Defense Minister in 2013. ...

Here is someone who has been through the 1918-20 Spanish flu pandemic that took millions of lives all over the world. What is he like? He was a professor of Marine Engineering at the City University of London till he retired at age 65 in 1973. Weighton says he is very pleased he was able to live so long and make so many friends. He has had serious medical operations but nothing he has experienced is like the coronavirus and self-isolation. He calls it "bizarre." But his advice is that there is nothing you can do about this so you might as well do what you can and  never mind about what you can't. He has 3 children, 10 grandchildren and 25 great grand children. He and wife Agnes traveled and worked around the world then settled back in the UK. She and his wife Agnes who passed away in 1993 volunteered in retirement as marraige counselors and helped youth groups in Alton.  ...

British prime minister Boris Johnson will visit India in January at the invitation of Indian prime minister Modi. It is the first bilateral visit of Mr. Johnson since taking office. Johnson says he really looks forward to the trip and delivering on the quantum leap to create jobs and growth for the two countries. He has invited Modi to the G7 Summit in London as a guest nation along with Australia and South Korea. Mr. Johnson will also host a climate change summit. The government is relying too much they say on an app from Google and Apple to do the tracing because for this kind of work humans are needed, "boots on the ground" are needed. South Korea and Taiwan have successfully used people to do the contact tracing by using access to cellphone carrier data that was made possible from protocols established in earlier MERS crisis. ...

Some countries such as France are increasing kilometres of bike lanes in Paris and suburbs. Traffic has dropped in Paris and other cities to a point where people living in cities are looking for ways to preserve some of the good things from the public health crisis such as the quieter streets, less or no pollution, less traffic congestion. Some cities are closing areas on their rever fronts so that people have more room to walk and exercize. Cities doing this are Oakland, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago and Philadelphia in the U.S., and Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver in Canada. Cycling and walking is becoming popular.  In Berlin motor vehicle lanes are being replaced with bicycle lanes in many streets. In Bogota 35 kms. of auto traffic laneshave been converted using cones into bicycle lanes. In March the mayor of Mexico City suggested 130 kms of temporary bicycle lanes. This report in the Guardian says London is one of the cities that have not acted quickly to make these changes for larger bike use. ...

Banaji says there has been persistent negative coverage given to Jeremy Corbyn of the Labor Party for the last two years. A lot of hard work has been done by Labor MP's, Labor activists, volunteers, to get the Labor message across. Corbyn is seen as giving a calm composed performance in the face of hostile media and audience, including the televised interview in which he talked of real issues facing ordinary British people. One of the ways Corbyn has softened the media distorted image of him is by acting calmly under pressure and not taking on an autocratic style. This was best seen on the day he first handed out the Labor party manifesto with the focus on the message- for the many, not the few. Republicans are divided in Texas in 2023 which could turn it over to Democrats. One forgets that Texas is the state that a Democrat LBJ Lyndon Baines Johnson was from and his base of support, first vice president under John Kennedy and then elected president. LBJ signed legislation for amending Social Security to create Medicare and Medicaid. He also passed Civil Rights Act of 1964 banning segregation and in 1965 enfranchised black voters. The WSJ in this editorial sees the divisions between Republicans in the House and the Senate over the impeachment of Attorney General Paxton as signs that Texas has one party dominance for too long. It says this could turn the state to a Democrat majority in 2024 as it was under LBJ in 1960, who helped create programs revered by all Americans.

Local elections for 181 local councils in Britain in April 2012 show the toll taken on the Conservative party led coalition government of David Cameron from austerity measures and general dissatisfaction with the government. The Conservative party Mayor of London won the election in London over Labor's Ken Livingstone, with a slim majority, largely determined on personality issues. Throughout Britain the Conservatives lost seats in local government. BBC projections with most of the votes counted show Conservative share of the vote dropping from 35% to 31%, Labor moving up from 35% to 38%, and the Liberals remaining at 16%. Labor gained 823 seats, Conservatives lost 405 seats, and Liberal Democrats lost 336 seats. Voter indifference was shown in the voter turnout at 32%, the lowest since 2000, according to the BBC. Cameron said he would continue with his austerity program and cuts in spending, saying "these are difficult times, and there aren't easy answers."

Pret A Manger, British sandwich chain, is planning an expansion in the U.S. by opening stores in San Francisco. The chain has stores in New York, Chicago, Washington and Boston. It has expanded rapidly in Britain with 288 stores, and has 60 stores in the U.S. It was co-founded by friends Metcalf and Beecham in 1986 at a single location near Victoria station in London. By 2000 it had opened a store in New York. McDonald's took a 33% stake in 2001. After a failed expansion in Japan with 14 stores, which brought the company close to bankruptcy, it cut costs. McDonald's sold its stake to Bridgepoint Capital in 2008. The expansion planned in the U.S. is carefully planned, with one store planned initially in San Francisco to test performance. Pret was mostly a lunch chain, it is now considering a dinner menu, with one store in London testing this. Bridgepoint now owns 66% of Pret A Manger.
