On immigration  she was as Home Secretary responsible for one of the difficult issues of the Brexit campaign- with net immigration at 330,000 in 2015 exceeding the 100,000 target set by Cameron. That she retains confidence from all segments of the party, as well as her education, experience, and resilience, may provide some of the "calm and composed" manner that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for in the Brexit negotiation. ...

Lower oil and natural gas prices are a big boost to the economies of the US and the European Union. Cost savings equal about 3.5% of GDP in Italy and 2% of GDP for Portugal, Germany, and Spain, according to Capital Economics. The price of oil has dropped to $77 a barrel from $121, falling below its pre Ukraine war levels. This boost could increase eurozone output by 1.5%, equivalent to about a years worth of growth. Instead of contracting by 1.3% eurozone economies are expected to grow by 0.7%.

The White House site shows the Memorandum of Understanding on the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor or IMEC that will build rail, internet, telecommunication, supply chain connections from hubs in India through the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel to ports and commercial hubs in Europe. The signatories are the US, Germany, France, Italy, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the European Union. The Saudis have committed $15 billion to the plan and other countries will add funding. At the same time Germany-India and EU-India relationship creates a 2 billion people market with capital, technology and labor potential to create the largest potential driven economic group in the world, combining EU's 20 trillion to India's $4 trillion economy and mutually complementing, which has potential to rival the US at $30 trillion by 2030 as India grows rapidly in the new EU/Germany/India market and the EU gets a new boost with the complementarity of the two regions by 2035. After 2 years of negotiations most of the tough questions about Britain's future trading relations with the European Union remain unanswered.

But the tough questions are not going away as a cross party group in parliament seeks to take control of the process and call for an extension under Article 50 for the March 29 deadline. A Berlin based think tank, German Institute for Economic Research, says Germany could end its dependence on energy imports by winter of 2022. That is much sooner than mid-2024 as Economy Minister Habeck has stated.The issue has serious urgency as the war continues in April in Ukraine entering a new and more dangerous phase in the east. And every day oil and gas imports by European Union gives Russia $16 million for coal, $434 million for natural gas, and $489 million for oil, a total of close to $1 billion every day.  With new missile attacks on civilian buildings this is one way for European Union to shoulder some of the burden that it has not done so far. DIW think tank says this could be done with decreased industry and household consumption that could generate about 18-26% savings of the demand for Russian natural gas, suggesting that households turn down thermostats and use less warm water, and industry turn to alternative fuels such as coal and biomass. Another saving is from increased supplies from Norway and the Netherlands of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Increased supplies from Norway alone says DIW could cover 20% of current annual imports of gas from Russia. Instead of waiting to build new infrastructure, the new LNG terminals on the coast which face long construction times and eventually falling demand for natural gas which make them financially untenable, the best approach is to use existing infrastructure in LNG terminals in the Netherlands, Belgium and France to increase volume in EU pipelines. Such action would cover 25% of demand for Russian natural gas. Other action is get more efficient use of the European pipeline system to increase German gas imports from Algeria, Libya and other North African nations vis southern EU nations. ...

The NYT's Jonathan Kandell offers an indepth look at former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who succeeded SPD leader Willy Brandt. Schmidt was from a working class neigborhood in Hamburg. Schmidt fought in the Germany army on the eastern front and the western front. He was a prisoner of war in a British camp in 1945. From 1946 to 1949 he studied politics and economics at the University of Hamburg. Both his father and wife were schoolteachers. He joined the SPD party during this period and worked for the Hamburg city government in various positions before being elected to the Bundestag, the German parliament in 1953. He returned to city government and supervised the response to a flood from the overflowing Elbe river in 1961 with extraordinary vigor. When Brandt was elected chancellor in the Social Democrat government in 1969, Schmidt was made defense minister, making improved relations with the Soviet Union and East Germany (German Democratic Republic or GDR) a priority, at the same time supporting the stationing of American nuclear missiles in Germany. In 1972 Schmidt became finance minister, and in 1974 he succeeded Brandt as chancellor. Schmidt and Giscard D'Estaing, the French president helped setup the European Council, and made the early efforts that led to the common Euro currency of the European Union, Schmidt's main achievement. By 1982 the Social Democrats party was divided following Schmidt's support for stationing nuclear missiles in Germany, and a parliamentary vote led to the fall of the Schmidt government. Kandell describes Schmidt as overconfident, not willing to listen to criticism. Some of Schmidt's popularity in Germany he attributes to Schmidt's wife Loki, a botanist with a likable personality. Later assessments of Schmidt in the media make references to Schmidt's frequent cigarette smoking right up to the end....

Competitive devaluatations if a number of countries exited the eurozone would have an enormous harmful effect on Germany. Germany is an export dependent economy and sends two thirds of its exports to EU countries. In the unlikely event Greece leaves the eurozone, Monti says effective political policy responses can be expected to prevent this from affecting the rest of the eurozone. Monti is on a visit to the U.S. for talks with President Obama. He praised the effort by Greece's prime minister Papademos to meet the demands of international lenders in difficult conditions.

The European Union Commission president Manuel Barroso announced a multiyear $15 billion package of loans and grants for the new Ukrainian government on March 4, 2014. No immediate conditions were specified. Barroso said, this is "designed to assist a committed, inclusive and reforms oriented government in rebuilding a stable and prosperous future for Ukraine." This is meant to replace the help offered to the previous pro-Russian government by Russia and now cancelled with the ouster in street protests of that government. The U.S. has offered $1 billion in loan guarantees. For Ukraine this offers the prospect of making a new start under EU and possibly IMF guidance. The needs are estimated at $35 billion in international assistance loans over 2 years by the Ukrainian government, because of the dire state of the Ukrainian economy.

An April 2022 survey by the EUropean Chamber of Commerce in China found 23% of companies were considering shifting current or planned investments in China to other parts of the world. This WSJ report says even before the latest covid lockdowns over one third of American companies told the American Chamber of Commerce they would reduce investment in the country due to the policy environment there. WSJ says there are serious question about the future growth of the Chinese domestic market and the stability of the overall policy environment for business. The distinct advantages of India and South East Asia are now becoming clear including growing youthful labor forces, and governments that as in India are part of the Free World democracies allied with America and the European Union says WSJ.

India in 2022 and looking at 2030 has great potential in the world. India's interests as a democracy are clearly aligned with the US and Europe. In the past when India was small in economic terms after emerging from the British Empire as an independent nation and out of the fire of the partition and wars in South Asia in 1962, 1965, 1971 policies of ambivalence in foreign affairs took place. At that time says Manmohan Singh, a former prime minister who negotiated for rouble -Indian rupee agreement in the 1970's and 1980's India was finding its way for its small but growing economy. This was in the context of the Nehru-Indira Gandhi policy of non-alignment of the early years after independence when India was never presented with an opportunity to make a difference in the world and was only a small part of the world economy. Today's situation is different. The US and European Union now see the need for a principle based economic order and while one may quibble about the small details, in the larger sense, history has intended for us, the US, the European Union, UK,  British Commonwealth of which we are a part, to stand together economically and politically with our shared parliamentary systems based on western- British and American- democracy and values.  Never has history presented such a huge opportunity for billions of people- to meet the aspirations across continents from North and South America, European Union, to Africa, Asia south and south east and Japan. All countries that aspire to the free societies that have evolved over hundreds of years. It is also the spirit in which Hind Swaraj was written in 1910 by Mohandas Gandhi and which was turned into reality only 37 years later under his leadership and vision for India. The non-alignment period of 2 decades was more of a intervening chapter that resulted from a sense of grievance rather than in the spirit of courage and spirited effort that Mohandas Gandhi embodied and led India with. In Manmohan Singh's direct unmistakable terms and from the vast experience he brings as a respected Indian civil servant- "India as the largest peace loving democracy stands to gain enormously from this principled trade aspiration of the western block of nations of the US and European Union. It presents a tremendous opportunity for India to become a large producing nation for the world and a global economic powerhouse. However, to capitalize on these opportunities India needs free access to these markets, an accepted and global currency to trade in and seamless trade settlements." Manmohan Singh sees millions of factories manned by hundreds of millions of people of all castes, creeds and religions of India. This is a pivotal moment of change for India and India must grasp it firmly. It is also the Mohandas Gandhi of Hind Swaraj taken to a new level from 1910 to 2050, and today's young people's aspiration for India.  ...

Krugman says the European Union countries were not ready for the euro and the current crisis shows this. Spain with its peseta could have regained its competitiveness with a 20% devaluation, after years of inflation as money flowed into Spain from other countries including Germany and fueled the housing boom. Or Spain would have received stimulus funds from the central government, if it was an American state like Florida. Instead Spain now has to work through this crisis with high unemployment and painful deflation. Le Pen said she would cut the VAT on energy. Macron said a cap on fuel prices was "twice as effective as dropping the sales tax." Le Pen said she will cut taxes, and no tax for under 30's.  On Europe and Russia- Macron said Le Pen was one of the first leaders to recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea. "You are speaking to your banker when you speak to Russia," Macron said referring to a bank loan from Russia. He also said that the French did not look to Russia for finance, when Le Pen said she was turned down by French banks. On the European Union- Macron argued that Le Pen's idea of "a Europe of nations" would spell the end of the European Union and that "you are selling a lie." Schofield says Macron avoided the trap of coming across as too arrogant or technocratic, sometimes even holding back.  ...
