The tariffs dispute with China escalates as China increases the tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. goods from 5-10% to 25% starting June 1st. The U.S. put its tariff increase on $200 billion of Chinese goods in effect on May 9, increasing it from 10% to 25%. The U.S. exports less to China than China does to the States by a wide margin making it possible for Mr. Trump to up the ante. Mr. Lighhizer's office says it is looking at tariffs on all remaining goods from China imported to the U.S. if China does not agree not to renege on its commitments and assurances to the U.S. in the talks on improper technology transfers and other matters.

India's loan for the bullet train project is for 81% of the 1.1 lakh crores cost of project  from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, at 0.1% interest rate for 50 years with 15 year grace period. These are extraordinary terms provided by the Japanese government agency as part of its international aid for development. India's ruling BJP party wins 103 seats and is leading in one more seat in the 2018 Karnataka state assembly elections. This compares with 40 seats in the last election in 2013. The Congress party won 78 seats down from 122 seats in the 2013 election. A regional party Janata Dal won 37 seats. 113 seats are needed to have a majority and form the next government. The elections here could influence the national elections in 2019. India's tech city of Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka state. The demand for ships went up so steeply that shipping rates hit the roof, and the prices of ships went up accordingly. Between the end of 2006 and July 2008 , shipyards received enough commissions, says the Economist, that this would double the world's fleet. Just as demand has collapsed and international trade has gone down, about 9000 ships are coming onstream. Now 11% of fleet capacity justs sits on the water, in the seas outside the harbors of Singapore, Hong Kong and other southeast Asian ports. A 150 tonne cape class ship that sold in 2003 for $18.5 million in the used market, when rates for charter were $15,000 a day, had risen by summer 2008, to $85 million with rates of $175,000 a day. These rates went up even more to $300,000 a day, which is 20 times what it was in 2003. And rates today are back down to $15,000 a day, where they were in 2003. This ship, cited by a broker, to give some idea of the extent of this boom and its collapse, was sold for scrap at $7 million. And South Korean shipyards are taking this into account, in their pricing and collection of payment, with 20% demanded upfront, 60% during construction, and 20% upon delivery. The backlog in shipyards is estimated by Clarkson Research, a maritime research firm, at $526 billion, even as banks are leery of lending and concerned about the value of the collateral in the event of default. Some smaller Korean shipyards are closing. Steve Mann, analyst at HSBC, says that half of the orders for delivery in 2010 will be delayed, so that there is work for 2011 and inventory or excess capacity does not pile up on the oceans. Even in this situation China, India and Vietnam continue to support the expansion of their own shipyards. This suggests additional losses for shipbuilders, shipping lines and the banks that lend to shipyards. All this also goes to show that the rush to industrialize, once it gets a firm footing- like it has in the Chinese model of increasing investment and local governments pushing infrastructure, industry and export factories with officials judged on GNP growth numbers- can exacerbate a boom-bust cycle. This is one industry, others include machinery manufacturers, commodity producers, and manufacturers of parts that go into finished products assembled in China for export. This means it would take the world economy down with it, if some external factor like the drop in export demand suddenly slows everything down. Machinery manufacturers in Germany, commodity producers in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Australia, and manufacturers of the high tech parts in Japan and Taiwan that are shipped to China for assembly, all go down in this boom-bust cycle, in a dramatic manner. ...

Next to corn and potato farms are acres of solar panels intended to pass solar energy to the Sherco solar energy plant in the neighboring area for transmission. It will replace 3 coal powered units at Becker's electric plant. Becker is only one of seven such Municipal areas called Coalition of Utility Cities that will make he shift to solar. What happens to 240 workers at the coal plant owned by Xcel Energy? They will not be layed off says Xcel and the state provides funds to retrain workers. Some will be employed at anuclear plant owned by Xcel. The state provides 4.75 million for retraining, and $20 million for a new industrial park that will generate new jobs. Additional jobs created at Form Energy in Massachusetts that makes the battery storage systems for Sherco/Xcel. It is a culture change for workers and for sceptics. A 1.9 million ton coal pile sits outside Becker to last 100 days- coal related pollution will decline and improve health.      ...

Earlier the U.S. under president Trump had distanced itself from the region, but Mr. Trump and his advisors now see the need to engage in the region to ensure stability, and support the Europeans in the effort to prevent the large scale emigration that threatens European unity. Europe following the 2015 Merkel migrant crisis is acting with the policy of heading off both wars, terrorism and economic dislocation that fuels emigration right at the points of origin, before it even starts. This shows that the French after action in Ivory Coast and Mali and the Germans with aid to Africa are remaining involved in development and stability programs in Africa, lessons learned from 2015. The goal of the Berlin meetings is to arrange high level agreement for foreign powers to withdraw from destabilizing the Arab regions in North Africa particularly Libya by supplying weapons and support to quarreling factions. ...

Julia Klockner is Bundestag president and is close to chancellor Merz. She is a senior politician of the CDU, from Rhineland Palatinate. Her father is a wine grower in that region. She started out as a journalist and from 2010 -2022 led the CDU in her home state. She has taken a position on the destabilization of German politics by the AfD party after Merkel's failures in illegal immigration that has stretched public resources. Similar to the premier of Denmark Mette Fredericksen, a Social Democrat, Klockner as a Christian Democrat understands that illegal migration is bad for social cohesion in Germany. Klocker and Merz both understand that the public's patience has been tested to the limits by millions of illegal migrants as in the US. Her view early on in Merkel's cabinet was that legal immigrants have to be integrated into German society. She sees no need for AfD, when the CDU/CSU conservatives in Germany and in Bavaria can prevent illegal migrants from entering the country. She says-"You don't have to vote AfD for what you want. There is a democratic alternative: The CDU."  ...

NYT looks at Judge Tanya Chutkan, the judge in the January 6 trial in the US, the first federal trial of Mr. Trump beginning March 4, 2024. She is a former public defender and civil litigator. Her strong presence in the courtroom reflects her extensive trial experience and her upbringing in a prominent Jamaican family, says NYT. Her great grand parents came to Jamaica from India to work on the sugar plantations during the British colonial rule and her father was selected to go to college on a scholarship. She no longer rides the 5 miles to the federal courthouse in Washington DC on her bicycle, she jogs different routes with US marshals and they drive her to work. On some days she can be seen toting a bottle in Lycra shorts and tennis shoes after a jog entering the courthouse with US marshals at her side.

In Game 7 Yamamoto with no rest day pitches the next day 34 pitches for two and half decisive innings with the Dodgers ahead on a homer by Rojas to end the World Series with Dodgers 5 Toronto 4 in Game 7.

With 18 innings in Game 3 and 11 in Game 7 this World Series rates as one of the all time great classics of world baseball. It also shows the intuition of Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts in keeping 34 year old Rojas in the Game 6 and 7, and in bringing in Yamamoto in the final 3 innings after exhausting the entire Dodgers pitching rotation. From Game 3's 18 innings it was clear that if the game went on to extra innings the depth of the Dodgers team and the experience of it's manager would come into play to overturn any predictions.

Life for ordinary people in the GDR meant living in a communist state but for ordinary people it also had its good points, as shown in this report on the German Democratic Republic that lasted from 1949 to 1990. Female participation in the workforce was 90%. It was the most developed state in the bloc of countries led by the Soviet Union. Ownership of fridges or refrigerators was twice that of the western nations. Till 1989 the East German state known as GDR was accepted as a socialist workers state even by people in West Germany called the Federal Republic. Its collapse so quickly was not expected and was a result of a chain of events in which eventually no one was in control- a totally spontaneous collapse of a socialist state. For east Germans 33 years later it is still a difficult event to grasp as the collapse of the socialist state led to most of the young population moving to western germany leaving behind an aging population without the economic security for workers that prevailed in the former GDR socialist state. As a result even after billions were spent on integration east Germany never adapted to the change, and still feels separate from the rest of Germany, and people feel looked down upon. ...

Simple numerical skills, finding information on a website might be difficult for a good third of the American population. Peggy Carr, a Commissioner at the Education Department says- "There’s a dwindling middle in the United States in terms of skills. Over time we’ve seen more adults clustered at the bottom.”  US is lagging behind other countries and is also having a shocking level of lack of basic skills for a significant part of the population. The failure of the Education Department and different administration's programs in the last 3 decades suggests need for companies and individuals to come up with their own efforts- including use of Lyrarc.com for reading comprehension and numerical skills. The number of test takers whose skills were at about the level of a primary school student in math went up to 34% in 2024 up from 29% in 2017. Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies Test was given in 31 economic regions, to 161,000 people of which 2600 were in the US. It was given in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2023. US ranked 14th in literacy, 15th in adaptive problem solving, and 24th in numerical skills. Countries doing best ranked are Finland, Japan Norway, Sweden and Netherlands, Estonia, Belgium and Denmark. Northern Europe does best and Japan.   ...
