The European Commission has proposed a 9 month limit for vaccination validity for travel to and within the EU. If approved by EU ministers non EU travelers and travelers within the EU will be required to show they had booster shots once original vaccination status is more than 9 months old. 

The current practice of countries being added and dropped from red lists will be dropped and instead of 27 countries in the EU having a confusing set of their own restrictions, a uniform set of rules will apply for the whole of the European Union. Six months are set for waning immunity from the vaccinations and three months were added to give countries more time to prepare their booster shot vaccine campaigns.

The connections between president Zuma and the Gupta family with its controlling interests in the media, mining and other industries, are widely seen as a problem for the president. The move to invest in nuclear plants by the Zuma administration was opposed by the finance minister leading to his resignation. The connections have affected the credibility of the Zuma administration, leading to the decision by the president not to run again for election. A no confidence motion this time under secret ballot is being passed for the second time in parliament in August 2017.

Yuriko Koike is elected the first woman governor of Tokyo, in a three way race, winning by over a million votes. She was Minister of Defense in the first government of prime minister Abe in 2007 which lasted only a short time. She was a news anchor before being elected to parliament in 1992 and supporting conservative causes. As a student she studied overseas learning Arabic at the American University of Cairo, and getting a degree in sociology at the University of Cairo. At 64 she is relatively young compared to a LDP candidate who was 76. The previous two governors resigned from office in financial scandals. Her immediate task is preparing for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and keeping the costs down for Tokyo residents.

Berlin's most famous hospital. Half of Germany's Nobel prize winners for medicine and physiology worked at Berlin Charite Hospital. It was setup in 1710, by 1810 it was a medical university, and today a leading world medical centre. Mr. Navalny is being treated here. It is also a centre in the fight against the pandemic.

While growth will be closer to 3% for 2008 and next half of 2007, inflationary impact of any spurt in growth will be higher from now on as higher food and energy prices are expected Productivity isn't going to contribute much and corporate profits will grow only by around 5% in 2007 and 2008 compared to 21% in 2006. If the Fed raises rate because of the inflation pickup being a significant factor to consider then the spurt in growth would be at risk. Half the buyers who buy the Prius want to make a statement one survey shows. About 400,000 sold and on track to sell 175,00 in 2007. Whats the secret? One possibly is that to make a statement you need to have the name synonymus with hybrid something Honda Gm and Ford failed to do as they had hybrid versions of aregular car or suv. Honda is trying now to build one from scratch. Interestingly its Accord hybrid version did not deliver much more mileage than its gasoline version (why?) and is being discontinued. GM's Volt will be built only as a hybrid.

Mercedes opened a museum in Stuttgart and Porsche is opening anew one this year. The idea is to be able to creat a bonding with the customer by having him visit the factory see how the car is made, see the history and heritage of the automobile brand and then pick up his car in a ultra modernistic architecture building, so that he can have a sense of being special and witnessing a marvel.

The eathquake in China in Sichuan province with hundreds of thousands of people homeless, about 50,000 believed to be dead in the rubble and debris of the earthquake and over 60,000 severely injured. The epicenter of this earthquake is 50 miles from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. Chinese relief efforts including the largest ever airlift by the Peoples Liberation Army and deployment of over 100,000 people from the army and other rescue efforts have strained resources and proved inadequate. Some of the large dams are being inspected. The first large shipment of foreign aid was 24 tons of tents from Russia.

The Buick Regal is turning out to be just the car for going after younger buyers, and going after Gen Y buyers, buyers who have appeared so elusive for GM. It handles like European cars in its ride, and this reviewer compares it to a Peugeot. It was almost an accident in the way it was developed. It started as the development of a global, midsize front-drive platform at GM's Opel division in Russelsheim, Germany in 2004. At the time it was to be the next generation Saturn Aura for the US, but with Saturn closed down, it was renamed Buick. In Germany its called Opel Insignia. In China where Buick sales are growing rapidly, this car is called a Buick. This car is getting great reviews and is a part of the new rebirth of GM.

Akis Tsochatzopoulos, 74, a former defense minister from the socialist Pasok Party, is given a 20 year sentence for taking 55 million euros in bribes from a number of arms deals. He was defense minister from 1996 to 2001, and the charges relate arms purchases in that period of Russian TOR-M1 short range missiles and German submarines. He is already serving a eight year sentence for other offenses. Submarine deals with Germany at what were thought to be inflated prices were a topic of discussion as the Greek crisis and unemployment worsened in 2010-2012.

Changes to dividend policies for state owned companies made at the Third Plenum in Beijing in November 2013. Plans were approved for state owned companies in China to increase dividends for the government to get 30% of after tax profit by 2020, up from about 15%. Frangos says it would be difficult for the companies to implement the 30% target without having listed subsidiaries make dividends available to all investors.

Sanford Bernstein estimates the first phase of China's Strategic Petroleum Reserve may have boosted imports by 400,000 barrels a day in March and April. Another factor is consumption. Stimulus dollars pushed fixed asset investment by one third in the first quarter, yet consumer spending went up less than 10%. Consumption will remain weak. Ultimately China's stimulus efforts may act as a brake on sudden falls in commodities prices, and not support continual upward pressure on commodities prices right smack in the face of a deep recession and large underutilization of manufacturing capacity in the industrialized world....
