The German government plans to give $8 billion to Uniper in exchange for  a majority stake in Germany's energy company Uniper. Uniper was hit hard when Russia turned off natural gas supplies. It reported a net loss of $12.6 billion for the first half of 2022. The German government will also take a stake in the Finnish company that owns Uniper, Fortum Oyj.

The UAE is putting $30 billion into a new fund called Alterra to invest in clean energy in the developing world. The goal is to get $250 billion into the fund by 20230 from other investors. Evergrande is asked to demolish in 10 days 39 buildings on an artificial man made island off Hainan on China's southern coast. The island was supposed to resemble man made islands in Dubai. Authorites stated the permits were improperly obtained and cited damage to coral reefs on the southern coast. Apartment sales for Evergrande are down to $113 million in the last quarter of 2021.

Jim Krane of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, points to an important development- the increasing consumption of oil in Saudi Arabia that is shrinking its ability to be a reserve supplier in the Middle East when a Iraq, a Kuwait or a Libya's oil supplies are cutoff. Saudi population and industry is growing and is using up a quarter of its oil production. Consumption is at 3 million barrels a day, more than the oil consumed in Germany, and is growing at 10% a year. Use of oil is subsidized by the government and with social spending up in Arab countries a cut in subsidies is not expected anytime soon. Projections by Jadwa Investment of Riyadh show that the reserve margin will disappear by 2020. By 2038 Chatham House in London predicts Saudi Arabia will become an importer of oil. This is important because America's sanctions against oil imports from Iran require the Saudis to step up and act as the reserve supplier. This happened with Libya, and 1.5 million barrels a day were cutoff after the revolution. Iran exports 2.2 million barrels a day. This will keep supplies tight and keep pressure on oil prices in 2012-2013....

This editorial in the Economist says Britain's economic recovery will not be complete until interest rates are well above zero and productivity growth is established. Without productivity growth and growth in wages, both lacking in the economic recovery since 2009, tax revenues will not be enough to reduce the deficit, requiring more spending cuts. That means the Bank of England will not raise interest rates, keeping a situation of no rate changes prevailing since March 2009 when the central bank cut rates by 0.5%. In the current situation the Bank of England is not expected to raise rates till 2016, only after the U.S. Federal Reserve increases rates to avoid appreciation in the pound and further deflationary pressure, according to Goldman Sachs. With inflation currently at zero, following the drop in oil prices, and 10% appreciation in the pound since mid 2013 making imports cheaper, there is little pressure to increase interest rates. In 2011 inflation with rising food and energy prices reached 5.2% , but the Bank of England did not raise rates because of the eurozone economic crisis affecting growth. Only since 2013 has economic growth picked up with 1.2 million jobs created since the beginning of 2013, bringing unemployment down from a high of 8.5% in 2011 to 5.6% in May 2015. Throughout the recovery productivity growth is falling behind- 2014 productivity measured by output per hour worked was 1.3% lower than in 2011, and 14% below the pre-crisis trend, according to the Economist....

Air pollution concerns are leading China's National Development Reform Commission to set a higher goal for cleaner energy. The NDRC plans a 52 gigawatt increase in installed capacity for green energy in 2013, an increase from 36 gigawatts in 2012. This includes 10 gigawatts for solar energy. Clean energy will take up 57% of additions to installed capacity in 2013, compared to 35% in 2010, according to Tian Miao, an energy anayst at NSBO.

In 2023 2.7 million jobs were created after 4.2 million jobs created in 2022. This very exceptional report from the city of Recife in Brazil's northeastern state of Pernambuco, comes from WSJ reporters Johnson and Jelmayer. It is about the physicians Vanessa van der Linden Mota, and Ana van der Linden Mota, her mother, who first alerted health authorites in Pernambuco about the cases of encephaly and the links to the mosquito Zika Virus in Recife, Brazil. From 147 recorded encephaly cases, and babies born with shrunken skulls or calcified brain structure in 2014 in Brazil, the cases reported jumped to 4,180 suspected cases. Estimates of cases by 2020 for such cases run up to 50,000 to 100,000 if the problem is not tackled. The family of the van der lindens come from Dutch-German immigrants settled in northeastern Brazil, a less developed region of the country. The family is unique with five doctors including neuro pediatricians Ana and Vanessa working in public hospitals in Recife , and father Helio a neuro surgeon. The entire state of Pernambuco has a total of 15 neuropediatricians, according to this report. The Ebola Virus emerged in countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia which suffered from war and neglect of health infrastructure. Here in Pernambuco state, as reporters Johnson and Jelmayer point out, the problem stems from neglect in public health infrastructure, especially sanitation and drinking water for shantytown dwellers and vast majority of poor residents in a city of 3.5 million, typical of developing countries in Latin America and South Asia, where development in some parts of the country have lagged far behind, and where needed public health infrastructure investments have not been made. Lack of dependable drinking water means collecting water in containers that are susceptible to breeding mosquitoes, such as the mosquitoes carrying the Zika Virus. A public debate on the lack of attention by socialist and worker's party led governments to this type of infrastructure and transportation services was already underway in Brazil leading to widespread protests in 2013. A $226 million investment in a soccer stadium in Recife, and similar investments in other smaller cities in the northeast were made under the Worker's Party government. Large investments for the Olympics now come as the economy contracted in 2015, and Brazil is hurt by another boom-bust cycle with the slowdown in China- with fiscal austerity policies, a loss of a third in the value of its currency, and the popularity rating of the newly elected government from the Worker's Party in single digits....
