Mossberg says look for 500 gigabytes of storage, 4 gigabytes of memory, an i3 to i5 or i7 Intel processor, in buying a PC or laptop. He suggests waiting till fall 2012 for the new Windows 8, and summer 2012 for the newer PC's designed to use Windows 8. This will be a big change from before, because Windows 8 is designed to use the touch feature of tablets. Ultrabooks are a bit pricier, making PC's and laptops the lower cost option. Laptop makers are trying to increase margins on the machines. Mac's also will get a newer operating system called Mountain Lion by the fall.

It will take time to rebuild parts of rural America that were in decline for decades, neglected by politicians of both parties, and are now seeing big investments. Mississippi County, Arkansas is one such rural area where US Steel and other steel makers are putting in new plants to make 12 million tons of steel a year. Only northwest Indiana has larger steel manufacturing plants. Subaru of Japan is located in Indiana. Here in Arkansas only 38% of workers live near the plant as it has seen a lot of decline, most commute from neighboring states or work from RV's.

It is back in schools the US commitment to fitness starting in schools for all children.

“From the late 1950s until … 2013 … scholars all across our country competed against each other in the presidential fitness test, and it was a big deal. This was a wonderful tradition, and we’re bringing it back.” The president said at a ceremony bringing back the presidential test to US schools. For decades till Obama changed it, this tradition helped school children as they did 40 pushups, 10 pullups, and a 6.5 minute mile. Eisenhower, RFK, JFK all supported it passionately.

China GDP growth forecast at 5% in 2025 and first half actuals at 5.3% with frontloading. The frontloading is because of surge in exporting before tariffs hit by May.  China is waiting to put fiscal stimulus as it fears tariffs will lower growth and increase unemployment. The housing sector is in deep slump. At this point fiscal stimulus is determined in Washington DC. The actual growth in 2025 may turn out to be much lower than 5% considering the weakness in the economy and the issues of tariffs and tough trade negotiations with the US and a changed environment for trade with the European Union.

The actual text of the Feb. 1, 2025 Executive Order  from the White House and president DJT says about the flow of fentanyl that has taken the lives of more of America's young people than the wars- the Korean War, Vietnam War and the First World War combined. That is the astonishing story of what has happened to American society over the last two decades. "The influx of these drugs to our Nation threatens the fabric of our society.  The PRC plays a central role in this challenge, not merely by failing to stem the ultimate source of many illicit drugs distributed in the United States, but by actively sustaining and expanding the business of poisoning our citizens." What the US Supreme Court and Justices Roberts, Thomas, Scalia, Barrett, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, make of this one can only guess. One has only to walk from the US Supreme Court Building to the faces from the 1950's at the Korean War Memorial to get a sense of what the Justices have to be thinking.  ...

US shipbuilding in 2025- US nuclear submarine built for South Korea by South Korea's Hanwha at PhillyShipyard in Philadelphia. South Korea is investing heavily in shipbuilding in the US under the new DJT effort to rebuild the US Navy. This happens when shipbuilders UK and the US who led the world in shipbuilding have ceded places to Japan, South Korea and China PRC. The once mighty shipbuilding industry in places like Glasgow and Philadelphia now makes less than 5% of the world's ships. South Korea is the only nation with the shipbuilding capacity and technologies that competes with China. Much of the world's shipping logistics and port networks are now controlled by China. It is not even the situation where Teddy Roosevelt or Franklin Roosevelt as Secretaries of the Navy build  America's shipbuilding industry before World War 1. The situation today requires a resolute effort to build up the shipbuilding industry that was neglected by the shortsightedness of a generation of American business and managers who mesmerized by financial markets failed to see the importance of essential infrastructure. ...

NITI Aayog does much of the development planning for India. It's CEO Parmeswaran Iyer, says about one third of the population of 1.2 billion people has reached the middle class. The poverty level has dropped to about 16% of the population. He describes the steps taken to achieve this. First inflation control by keeping inflation below 6%- it was 5.7% in December 2022. The critical variable in knowing whether lockdowns of cities and countries are working is called the coronavirus RO, or reproduction ratio. This ratio measures the average number of people infected by a carrier A. It could be that he infects 1 person at work and transport call it B people , or in large gatherings call it C people he infects 2 persons, or in other surroundings such as restaurants he infects 1 person call it D people. The people A has infected B+C+D are the ones now not infected by A with the lockdowns such as in New York, Italy, Germany, UK and France. It is determined by global health experts that the number of B+C+D is about an average of 4 persons infected by 1 person A with coronavirus, though it may be much higher in practice in some areas. The natural rate of RO or reproduction ratio is considered by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to be 3.86 or about 4, if no lockdown or social distancing or other prevention is practiced. This in a situation where people behaved as before unaware that the virus was around them. Governments such as New York and France, UK, Germany are including this key variable in their determination of how long a lockdown lasts, and for determining if the reopening is not going the right way or failing. In such situations the lockdown would be reinstated, or if it is a phased reopening such as in the U.S. and other countries go back to the previous phase. In Italy and Germany the RO reproduction ratio for coronavirus is estimated by official experts at 0.8. Germany's RO estimated by the Robert Koch Institute and Italy's by Franco Locatelli, scientific advisor to the government. In New York the margin is thin- with RO of 0.9, estimate from the state's governor. In France which has one of the tightest lockdowns of all with a document required to go outside it is at 0.6, the figure coming from the prime minister Mr. Philippe. In the UK it is below 1.0 but no accurate figure is reported. As Dr. Birx- leading the coordinated response in the U.S. - emphasizes over and over again this is a very contagious virus, about which not much is known. Social distancing, wearing masks, basic prevention measures such as frequent handwashing, and not gathering in large numbers of people, is essential for defeating this virus. This has to be followed up with extensive testing and contact tracing to win this fight.   ...

Angela Rayner, Secretary of Housing and deputy prime minister, removed the "beauty" requirement that was unnecessary and blocking new housing development in Britain. 62% of Britons support the aggressive housebuilding program of Labour government, 9% don't know and only 29% are opposed. Britain has a crisis in housing with a shortage of 4 million homes and 20% price increases in housing. Rayner's response on the change in the wording of housing requirements set by the government-  "This is ridiculous. Beautiful is so subjective. Actually, within the planning framework, there is a lot of specifications about in keeping with the local [environment]. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyway. It’s actually about [being] in keeping with the area, it’s about protecting nature and having access to nature, it’s about making sure that buildings are safe, they’re warm, they’re sustainable. So there’s a number of guidelines and rules that a developer has to follow. Beautiful? Beautiful means nothing really, it means one thing to one person and another thing to another." ...
