GM's handling of the recall for 114,000 Chevrolet Tavera sports utility vehicles in India in July 2013. 10 employees including GM's vice president for global engine engineering were fired by CEO Dan Akerson because of misleading Indian government officials about the result of emissions tests on the Tavera. The Tavera is a $15,000 sports utility vehicle designed for the Indian market.

IBM is one of the companies that have stated publicly its intention of investing in its people while other companies are cutting back, but a reality check shows that IBM is quietly conducting its own layoffs. IBM reported strong quarterly profits in January, but announced layoffs of 1400 people in its sales and distribution division the day after CEO Palmisano reassured employees in an email message. In many of these smaller scattered layoffs there is very little notice to employees. IBM has cut back employment in the US which is at 115,000 employees and expanded overseas which is closer to 300,000 employees, see the graph.

Oxfam reports that about half of the people showing up at soup kitchens in the U.S. are people with one person in the family working at a minimum or low wage job. About 3.3 million American are affected at the $7 federal minimum wage. The White House proposes a $10 minimum wage that it say would affect 28 million Americans. For most of these people working mostly in low wage retail jobs this can mean having more food and often having the money to take a bus instead of having to walk to work.

President Biden becomes the first US president to be present at the picket line. Biden says through a bullhorn at the UAW strike picket line in Detroit- "Unions built the middle class. It's a fact." He is pushing for auto companies to reach an agreement with the UAW union, and avoid any effects in the economy. He told union workers outside a Belleville Michigan GM plant near Detroit- "You've heard me say this many times. Wall Street did'nt build this country. The unions built this country. And the unions built the middle class. That's a fact. Let's keep  going. You deserve what you earned. And you earned a hell of a lot more than you get paid now." When he handed the bull horn to Shawn Fain the UAW leader, Fain said about billionaires and the executive class- "They think they own the world. But we make it run."

After two decades of missteps by management and workers in the auto industry that led to worker concessions on wages to revive the US auto industry the labor movement in the US was weakened. Workers wages have fallen behind with tiered wages offering new workers even less per hour, loss of cost of living adjustments during a period of high inflation. Shawn Fain won the election at the UAW in March 2023 following a direct vote of the leadership by every member of the UAW under a government supervised arrangement. He is now shaking things up at the auto workers union in Detroit and midwestern states asking autoworkers to end the tiered wages, return cost of living adjustments and a 46% wage increase.

New rules from the Biden administration make it easier for people ages 60-63 years to make up for putting less into workplace savings in earlier years with the impact of the 2009 financial crisis, loss of jobs or working parttime for a period, and smaller savings during the pandemic. People in these ages can now put in a 14% higher amount. And a maximum of $34,750 into their workplace retirement plans. This is one of the many actions taken by Biden-Harris, including increasing the amounts for Social Security, that combined with a stronger economy and job growth, lower inflation, is correcting many of the problems of the past that left seniors without enough money to retire in dignity and safety. Small steps taken in the context of bigger steps on infrastructure and chips, science, rebuilding manufacturing by investing in old unused plants and reviving them with new products- all this is creating anew future for America and the ordinary Americans.
