NY Times analysis shows upper and middle income groups support 33 year old Zohran Mamdani,  black and Hispanic residents support Cuomo for NYC Mayor. Mamdani has a good ground presence with 50,000 volunteers knocking on 1.6 million doors in an unprecedented effort in one American city as it became less and less affordable (WSJ). Paradoxically large numbers of higher income resident and middle income residents favored Mamdani over Cuomo, and Cuomo did better in black and minority neighborhoods. Mamdani promised better housing, freezing stabilized housing rents and going after landlords who do not fix rental properties, free buses, and city run lower cost grocery stores, free child care. For the funding Mamdani says $5 billion by making corporate tax 11.5% similar to New Jersey, and by a wealth tax of 2% on incomes over $1 million (which at $20,000 would not affect their standard of living), as the property owners supported Mamdani. Mamdani is a immigrant who came to America from Kampala, Uganda at the age of 7 with Indian parents. His father taught at Columbia University, Mamdani attended Bowdoin College in Maine. ...

A lack of rules for children growing up has affected an entire generation in U.S. and Europe and other countries. Sociologists say rules are essential for children to grow up and develop the skills for living and the lack of boundaries and rules has taken away this essential component for this younger generation today. Sociologists call this "infantilizing." It has also led to  people living in their own space and not carrying on the conversations essential for young people to develop into responsible persons.  Experts say this process of responding to the rules and learning are essential developmental process to go from childhood to adolescence and adolescence to becoming developed adults. This has been compromised over the last 25 years so that the socialization process that enables transmission of values from parents to children has not been taking place. An unwillingness to have moral based judgements and tell children what is good or right has added to the weakening of this process by which children learn and develop into mature responsible adults. ...

Health authorites in Italy, France, Britain India and the U.S, have hesitated in reopening schools. Germany and Denmark have reopened schools with no increase in infections with schools following specific policy including mandatory masks, air circulation rules, and careful preparation of schools to ensure social distancing rules are respected. Other countries reopening schools are Austria, Norway, Finland, Australia, New Zealand.

Schools in German states are reopen for about 1 month now, with a positive experience after careful preparation. Italy faces difficulty reopening its economy as people going back to work find it difficult, particularly women,with childcare provided by grandparents no longer an option, and lack of daycare. Opening of schools in Italy would help in reopening the economy, as well as provide relief to parents and children, when done carefully.

Former employees of Google and Facebook have joined together to form The Center for Humane Technology. It plans to fight tech addiction in schools. A ad campaign is planned with $7 million from Common Sense, capital it has raised, and $50 million in donated media and airtime by DirecTV and Comcast. The idea is to educate students, teachers and parents about overuse of tech media leading to depression, other dysfunctional health issues. 

In one report even Tim Cook, Apple CEO says he realizes the dangers and is trying to discourage such use by his nephew. Some early investors such as Roger McNamee say they are horrified at what has happened with overuse of social media, especially health effects for a generation of school children and young adults.

A decade after a precipitious decline in its stock price during the global financial crisis of 2008 stemming from its GE Capital unit, GE struggles with faltering stock price and poor performance stemming from other strategy errors in its core infrastructure business.  GE Capital is being shut down. Now one of its subprime lending units is likely to be put into bankruptcy protection. WMC Mortgage had losses under its GE Capital parent  of $1 billion during the financial crisis in one year alone. It has since faced a series of legal settlements and investigations. GE Capital has turned out to be a poor investment and a huge distraction for management for a company which considered its core business as infrastructure related.

In Germany the mood is changing in favor of vaccination as people are try to cut into the line for vaccinations based on age groups. Younger people even say they are caring for older parents to get vaccinated in this report from Hamburg and other cities.

This may be an encouraging sign even though it may not be following the rules because Germany's vaccine skeptics are giving way to vaccine envy. The word "Impfneid" refers to the feeling vaccinated people get with vaccine documents enabling them to travel freely. German took 52 million vacations in 2019, and only half that in 2020. In New York city people do not answer or say they do not want to get vaccinated in a door to door drive reported in NYT.

Prof. Twenge of San Diego State University says teens in the iGeneration are so different from the Millenials and previous generations, that in her research she has not seen anything quite like it. This generation of teens experienced the use of smartphones and social media at a young age in a way no previous generation has. More time was spent on smartphones than with peers face to face, and less time was spent with family, more time alone. This has led to mental health risks for teenagers.

Melinda Gates describes her experience with her children growing up with smartphones and the risks involved. Parents are in a great deal of confusion on how to handle this situation even as it is changing their children's lives in ways never experienced before, putting them more at risk.

Total student debt in the U.S. passed the figure of $1 trillion in late 2012, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the federal agency recently created. This figure is about 16% larger than an estimate made earlier in 2012 by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The surge reflects increasing numbers of people going back to college to get new skills in a faltering job market. Tution increases with cuts in state funds to colleges mean larger loans need to be taken. Another factor is that about 25% of borrowers are behind in payments, resulting in higher interest payments, according to New York Fed data. Experts say this could delay the recovery in the housing market, as potential home buyers take longer to build up funds for a down payment. Parents are co-signers on some loans for children and professional changing careers are also taking loans, creating larger effects of rising student debt.

The UK NHS is urgently tracking down parents of 35,000 children in London who are not fully vaccinated against polio, says this report in The Times. Health officials have detected the first outbreak since 1984. They are trying to trace it back to a "single household or street." London has lower rates of polio vaccination than the rest of England, dropping to levels that are seen as risky for the health of children. Vaccination rates are low in north and east London says this report in The Times. In London as a whole the vaccination rate for one year olds in 2021 is at 87%,  5 percentage points lower than that of the UK as a whole of 92%.  

Lack of investment in public health and services has weakened the public health system even as hundreds of billions of dollars were misallocated by capital markets gone astray. The pandemic exacerbated a bad situation in public health lowering vaccination rates even further.

The 65 million Americans called generation X sandwiched between baby boomers and the millenials are one that are also the 401 K experiment generation, and ones that experienced both the 2009 corporate greed and recklessness caused financial crisis and the pandemic. And experience financial anxiety at a different level.  Without the steady pension checks of their parents these Generation X middle aged people with their 401 K's are much worse off. This is the group Biden Harris, and Biden Walz, has to assuage and bring back up. The 2009 financial crisis left many in disarray with loss of jobs or lack of pay increases, or part time work. Many have not recovered after the pandemic delivered another blow to finances and cost of living surprises. Median household wealth of Generation X people 45 years to 54 years old was $250,000 in 2022, 7% lower than that of baby boomers in 2007, the only age group that experienced drop in median wealth.

The advantages of staying active, working part time that are shown to aid cognitive function during today's longer lives are not fully grasped.

Academy Heights Elementary, of Pinehurst, N. Carolina, is expected to close as part of the cost cutting efforts in North Carolina. The state is trying to close a budget deficit. Monroe County's superintendent proposed closing the school to save $500,000. The school has a 98% pass rate on state exams, an award winning math program. It is ranked the second best kindergarden to 5th grade schools in North Carolina. Parents and teachers point out that many of the students come from middle class families where both parents are working, and military families from Fort Bragg, and this is not just the demographics of being near Pinehurst resort; as higher income parents tend to send their children to private schools. They point to the way staff, parents and students work to create an environment that challenges children to learn. The questions here remain ones that are being taken up throughout the country- how to invest or disinvest in education in the face of budget deficits. Should education take cuts and how much? Another twist here is that Academy Heights is in a depressed black neighborhood of Tarrytown whose residents go to to other schools even though Academy Heights urges students from Tarrytown to apply. It is an elementary school and as elementary education has a special role to play in early childhood development, how much of these cuts should fall on elementary schools? Should the best schools be cut under any circumstances or should they be supported with sacrifices made elsewhere or do moderately higher taxes make sense in these situations? Does it make sense to preserve existing excellent schools even as the search for improvement in educational systems takes place -with investments like the $290 million the Gates foundation is committing to improving selected schools? produce excellence in other schools?...

 Nikki Haley was born in Bamberg, South Carolina in 1972, her father became US citizen 1978, her mother 2003, according to her autobiography. She was governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017 and served as the US ambassador at the United Nations under president Trump. This was true of Barry Goldwater born in Arizona before it became a US state, and Romney born in Mexico, Senator McCain born in the Panama Canal Zone. This is why when one parent is an American citizen as for Obama and Cruz this law prevails. When a child is born in the US he is considered to be a citizen at birth under the laws of the US and natural born under Article 2 of the US Constitution. Veteran reporter Mark Landler at NYT gives this exceptional report on Bolsover, a town in the Midlands in UK. Natalie Fleet, running for Labour for parliament, is a working class parent and a product of the UK Midlands region, a region around Coventry, Birmingham and Nottingham that was dotted with coal producing mines and industrial towns in the era before World War II. For most of the century till 2019 Labour held the parlamentary seats in this region and in the north of England around Sheffield. It was the loss of these seats that brought first Cameron and then Boris Johnson Tories to power, and where the immigration issue resonated for Nigel Farage's UK Reform movement that led to Britain having a referendum and leaving the European Union.  Today locals think it was all a big mistake, most Britons want to rejoin the EU, and they back Starmer's Labour party by huge margins after Jeremy Corbyn left the leadership position at Labour. Money that was allocated for reviving the town was never spent and the years passed with little change. The Hong Kong protests in 2019 are dividing families as shown in this report in the WSJ. It is about the young who have never known much about China and its recent history in the 20th century and the older parents who have seen China grow from the colonial period to what it is today. As other reports show the part of China called Shenzen that borders Hong Kong has very different perspective of the events there and see the events from the perspective of Beijing. Some of the protest leaders are only in their teenage years and lack the experience needed to help reach some sort of agreement with Chinese leaders. Day after day the two sides are growing further apart and see the protests in a different light. The leadership under Chief Executive Carrie Lam has also not provided some way to bridge the differences.
