See the piece on GE's Energy Gusher in Ahead of the Tape. As GE's financial services business led to earnings shortfall and 13% drop in its share price on April 11, investors may be overlooking the strong position of GE in energy businesses like turbines, nuclear energy, and in oil and gas. GE's overeseas sales went up by 23% in 2007 driven by 23% gain in its energy centric infrastructure business. Additional note is that GE is in the healthcare business and in green environmental business which should see growth even in a recession. And the financial services business may see further trimming after the earnings shortfall, so that GE is well positioned for the future.

Spain's King Felipe apologizes for acts of the early Spanish explorers Pizarro in Peru in 1532 and Hernan Cortez in Mexico in 1520 after the defeat of the local Empires of the Incas and the Aztecs to Spanish soldiers in the Spanish Conquest of the Americas. Much of the local population did not survive the conquest.

Bank of England minutes for the Jan 8-9, 2014 meeting show officials saying "they saw no immediate need to raise the Bank Rate even if the 7% unempoyment threshhold were to be reached in the near future." This comes as the unemployment rate average in 3 months to November 2013 was shown at 7.1%, according to the Office of National Statistics. The rate declined from 7.4% in the previous three months. In August 2013 Bank of England officials said unemployment would have to fall to 7% before raising the Bank's benchmark interest rate. The Bank of England has set the bechmark rate at a low of 0.5% and the size of the bond buying program at 375 billion pounds.
