Independent oil companies are eager to invest in Venezuela says Treasury Secretary Bessent at the Economic Club of Minnesota. He says phone are ringing non stop from these companies. Big Oil such as Exxon is taking longer. Chevron is already in Venezuela and Bessent says in a few months it can increase production by 40-50%. Oil revenue from Venezuela will be in a special fund that will be used for the people of Venezuela. Under Maduro since 2013 the oil revenue was used for regimes in Cuba and not managed well for the investment in infrastructure and modernization. US sanctions made it hard to modernize the oil industry which will now take place. Bessent calls Cuba's economy decrepit and now in bad shape. It also shows that realistically modernization and good standards of living are not possible in the western hemisphere by regimes of the Cuban or Bolivarist type which descend into corrupt regimes and lack foreign capital and technologies. Lula adopted an approach in Brazil that worked with the US and EU to modernize the economy creating a workable model for a Workers party. There is much to learn from these experiences in Latin America which come at considerable cost and suffering. ...

Even though Denmark is trying to portray this as about 60,000 people on an island almost the size of Canada, Denmark was a colonial power when it acquired the terrritory through merging with Norway and later in Treaty of Kiel in 1814 during the Napoleonic Wars it retained Greenland. In these European Wars lands were exchanged based on success of armies fighting the French. It is "completely useless" for Denmark and it has not invested in Greenland which is backward with poor standard of living, no infrastructure. The US alone can change that. For the US it needs to own the island to make the Eastern Seaboard of the US secure from foreign powers, a point Seward made when he sought to acquire it in 1867 along with the purchase of Alaska from Russia, Every American government since and including Truman has sought to do this. Denmark is in Greenland only because of its colonial power rivalry with Sweden and the British Empire, when it was exchanged or retained for other territories as was the practice of the Europeans in the 19th century wars. It is not there to develop the island, its infrastructure and improve its quality of life, and has never done this. ...

On taxes instead of $100 billion a year increase in the deficit that the 2017 tax cut of Biden's predecessor cost the Treasury -which benefited average Americans only $750 a year studies show, and reduced corporate taxes from 35% to 21% shifting billions to large corporations- Biden proposed $500 billon cut in the deficit by putting a 25% tax on 1000 billionaires in the US. Biden's guarantee that no one making less than $400,000 a year would pay an extra penny in taxes. Everyone would be better off, no one worse off. His predecessor's 2017 tax cut did not increase investment spending by companies which remained same as before. "There are 1,000 billionaires in America.   You know what the average federal tax rate for these billionaires is? 8.2 percent!  That’s far less than the vast majority of Americans pay.   No billionaire should pay a lower tax rate than a teacher, a sanitation worker, a nurse!  That’s why I’ve proposed a minimum tax of 25% for billionaires. Just 25%.  That would raise $500 Billion over the next 10 years." This report in The Guardian shows that nature can be prescribed as therapy by doctors taking a lot of pressure off the overburdened national health services of many countries. It is proven that even two hours of walks in nature settings can make a huge difference for mental health. Three decades of industrial progress and urbanization have left most countries with a new generation that has lost the benefits of this type of energizing and invigorating exercize, that does a ton of good for physical and mental health just when it is most needed during a massive pandemic.

Netherlands is well ahead of other countries in remote working. The percentage of employed persons working from home is about three times that of the U.S. or Britain. It is about 15% in Netherlands compared to 4-5% in the U.S. or Britain. A culture of near universal fast internet connections, a culture of trust with companies knowing the work will get done, and companies providing employees with funds to set up a good working environment from home. In some Dutch companies employees can take vacation freely as long as the work gets done. The idea of a whole work day spent at a desk in the office in some office building is not entrenched in Dutch culture. A U.S. poll shows 59% of remote workers would like to continue working remotely after the pandemic. Companies are shifting to a new culture of work done away from the traditional business office as the economy reopens. Its importance at  a time like this when fresh thinking is needed on a number of dimensions- vision, energy, fresh thinking, dynamism- is growing and a pressing need for corporations. Some corporations and industries would have benefitted vastly from these younger people into the upper ranks of management. Compare the way the new leadership at Fiat and GM, old Chrysler ran their companies and one sees this striking difference of younger managers taking on large responsibilities at Fiat and older management cliques at GM and Chrysler letting the companies suffocate as their adaptability to the new environments was poor. ...
